Sure, but is Carr a 2nd round pick and "I know what I've put on film" money to any team? His ceiling hasn't really changed in his entire career. What GM and coach is going to say "Derek Carr is our missing piece and we should give up valuable draft picks for him."? I think Pittsburgh will re-sign Fields and I don't see Aaron Glenn bringing in a guy like Carr. Who else? The Giants might do something with the HC seat on fire, but even still it won't be for a second. Then you combine that with a no trade clause and it all falls apart. Trading Carr is a pipe dream.
Yeah, not saying he's great or even good. Saying that a team looking to take a flyer on a QB has options that cost A LOT less to acquire and he's spent some time behind some really good QBs and with really good coaches the last couple of years. Who knows?Wentz didn't start in the playoffs for them though and has been really bad after that season. He's played in as many playoff games as Carr has (1). Wentz has only thrown 4 passes in the playoffs.
I get your point about money and all that but I don't think anyone's going anywhere near Wentz as a starter even if he is cheap.
what is the cap cost of the injury designationn? Do we save anything?Since his injury was last season, we have no restrictions on releasing him before the 2025 season.
Very well said. And while there may be some interest, what that interest consists of in terms of years and dollars is another story completely. No I don't think he is close to worth a 2nd or close to the player he thinks he is. I also don't think he's going to waive his no trade and would prefer to force a release if he's not going to be the starter. And even if he did waive the no trade for a certain team, he's still not likely to adjust his salary to help us and we would likely at best net a 7th or lower which isn't worth much. The end of his time with the Raiders shows he is willing to be petty and i honestly don't blame him for that.
But, at the same point, Carr may need to adjust his salary demands for the medium to long term. This is really practically speaking the last year of his deal in New Orleans. No way we pay him his contract the year after this so he will either get cut and need a new deal elsewhere or need a new deal with us. I see no way we keep paying him what he was getting and no way anyone pays him that after getting cut. So, he may see some value in a trade to a team he likes or getting cut this year so that he can sign a new 3 year deal this year. He's probably not getting another 3 year deal after this year. So this may be his last year for any mid-term security. After this year it's likely just lower priced one year veteran deals. So maybe he would swallow his ego for some mid-term security?
But, I do think it's highly unlikely Carr would agree to a deal and I do think the one team it would even be possible with is NY who might want some QB stability and I think they even have some cap space even after cutting Rodgers. Obviously there was some mutual interest between the Jets and Carr when he came here. Not sure if the Jets still feel the same or how much interest they did have. Obviously they were not willing to pay him what we did. And like you said, maybe the Giants are a possibility. But outside of that I don't see much interest. Although there is at least one article saying that Carr would garner interest from several teams, but that is likely only if he gets cut.
So, yeah, trading Carr for anything is likely a pipe dream.
I don't think you can just cut a guy if he has injury guarantees. He was hurt last year but won't pass a physical for a while.Since his injury was last season, we have no restrictions on releasing him before the 2025 season.
Hill doesn’t have any injury guarantees. The Titans released Lewan a few years ago while he was recovering from an ACL surgery.I don't think you can just cut a guy if he has injury guarantees. He was hurt last year but won't pass a physical for a while.
He is one of many players that costs cap space to release. Better to redo his deal.what is the cap cost of the injury designationn? Do we save anything?
My understanding it that he had injury guarantees for 2023 and 2024, but not 2025.I don't think you can just cut a guy if he has injury guarantees. He was hurt last year but won't pass a physical for a while.
No one's arguing he's the only problem but it's certainly within the realm of possibility the team either tries to renegotiate his salary or cut him considering he's a 35-year-old coming off a major injury who's not exactly cheap either.I'll help Taysom Hill is not the problem. Problems: getting Ram's cap number off the books. Age on defense in Jordan and Matheiu. Eek more out of Davis who can still play. You need two safeties. You need a pass rusher and a run stuffing defensive tackle. Your tight ends are mid. Olave's concussion history. Kamara is good but not aging and Miller needs to step up. Cut Jamal Williams and get younger. You need a guard. Carr is not the future but you cannot fix it all in one year. Do you dump his salary to eat the cap it sooner roll with Spencer Rattler with the idea we will be picking high in the future with Arch Manning as the top prospect and most teams in the league will have their quarterback. To me you have to have a plan that tries to envision the Arch Manning plan into existence assuming he is a legit NFL first rounder.
We actually save around $275k but releasing him, so while there is no real savings, there also is no loss.He is one of many players that costs cap space to release. Better to redo his deal.
Carr is better than at least 3 of those. Maybe Darnold if they are thinking a longer term and a legit franchise Qb. But if they are thinking on a short term Carr would be the best, talent-wise. He's a good QB when he's playing. Sure he chokes against the top notch teams, but that why the offense is run heavy. Those teams can have Russel Wilson, Sam Darnold, Joe Flacco, Carson Wentz or Justin Fields. Carr hasn't show his ceiling is higher than those guys. 3 of them have Super Bowl championships and don't cost anywhere close in money and take no draft picks.
He's recovering from a torn ACL that he had surgery for in December. At 35 years old. He won't be ready for camp and most likely begin the season on IR. The Saints aren't deep enough to carry him into the season without filling his roster spot. Remember, Foster Moreau also had a bad knee injury requiring surgery and Juwan Johnson is a free agent. We can't just sit on the roster spots no matter what the money looks like. Holker is the only guy under contract that doesn't have a blown out knee. It's like the pose a question and then try and answer it without even doing the tiniest bit of research.
Cutting Hill this year saves like $275k. Still $17m in dead money. You could cut him next year only take $9m in dead money. He's playing for the Saints this year no matter what.
Hill will be 36 next year and as much as Saints fans love him, will have no market. The most likely option is a pay cut with some form of extension until 27 and he finishes his career as a Saint.
