Hope.

We hear this word a lot and all of us feel it every Sunday when the Saints play. Us early Saints fans, hell, hope was all we had! Then Brees and Payton gave us hope and a winning team. Now, well, the Saints are bad again.

But with that, are the Saints hopeless?

I ask that because I see teams like the Steelers, Ravens, Packers, Eagles that are always in the mix, every year. They have hope and are proven winners. Yes, the Saints had 15 amazing years with Brees and Payton and they gave us hope that the Saints could win every game they played. For the past three years, that is not there. Carr is a player you win with but not because of. He is an NFL quarterback but not an elite one.

Granted, as one post earlier was about the hopeless Cleveland Browns, yet the aging Saints roster and the stubbornness of Mickey Loomis is, for many, just putting up a wall of not winning and having the fans base lose hope. There are always worse examples of franchises that are bad i.e. Jets, Browns, Jaguars, Cardinals. So, are our Saints in the mix of every year hope of the Steelers, Ravens, Packers, Eagles or they basement of meh with the Jets, Browns, Jaguars, Cardinals?

We started going downhill when Dennis Allen took over.

The tall tale sign was when they asked "How is it like now without SP in the locker room", this was during training camp. The player said, "Its a lot less stressful, SP would go up to players critique them and tell them about things to do in the week then ask them questions throughout the week. Things are more relaxed now"

That was the turning point in the franchise right there... While Rizzi isnt good long term as far as Xs and Os.. getting accountability back in the locker room is something we have been missing.. because it doesnt matter how tight nit the family is.. if people feel like their work doesnt matter because other players arent putting forth the same effort.. then all sheet hits the fan.

(on another note.. I would like to say.. ive been impressed with the WR play from players that arent even within the spectrum of a household name.. they catch the ball nice.. they try to turn up field as well. I feel like Kamara needs to go back to the fundamentals of catching out the back field.. Im sure he is a extremely hard worker.. but there have been some head scratchers.. and I think its a lot to do with being hung out to dry on those passes.. that wasnt a thing with DB)

The Eagles have had a few 4/5 win seasons.
The Ravens had that 15-17 slump.
It’s the NFL. Not college. You’re gonna have a season or two like this.
GB and Pittsburgh are the exceptions.

I think what helps the NFL fanbase hope is the cap & draft. A team, can go to first to worse in from season to season. Right now we all know our cap situation. We definitely have to start drafting better. It's those players that will help give us hope while we correct the cap. Then once the cap is manageable, then you go after that one or two players to help put you over or at least in the contender category.

Remember my friend that Hope is one of the Furies (or evils) of Pandora's box :hihi:

I "hope" the Saints can assemble a new GM, possibly overhaul the coaching staff, and pick up key free agents as well as have a stellar draft, and we'll be right in the thick of this thing. in the meantime, there's weed, bourbon, and beer :)

It took the Steelers 46 years to win it's first SB, even with Chuck Knoll it took a few years until Terry Bradshaw, Joe Green, Jack Ham, and other HOF's gelled into a championship quality team.
I feel we have a winning tradition installed in this franchise; we just need to get the right players together again starting with a head coach and a QB who has the"it"
factor.

Along with just average injury luck. You just can't build an entire team five players deep at every position.

There is always hope. I've only been a fan since the late 80/early 90's so I haven't seen the really bad days. However I did see this franchise go from a 3-13 team in 1999 to winning its first playoff game in 2000 after 3 seasons of Ditka. I also watched this franchise go from a 3-13 season to the NFC championship game the following year although that '05 team probably wasn't a 3-13 team in reality because of other obvious circumstances they played under. I guess my point is if you clean house and make the right hires anything is possible in the NFL today.

The rebuilds already begun, Loomis alluded to it before this season even started when he talked about walking down the cap. Underhill reported Loomis was going to trade back with the Rams had Bowers fallen to 14. Loomis didn't make a move for any overpriced, cap killing players. No trading for end of career overpriced cap killers either. He shipped out Lattimore to stockpile more draft picks and accelerate how much sooner the Saints will be operating fully in the green again.

Rebuilding doesn't mean a nuke goes off on the roster. Every GMs goal is to have a rebuild that quietly replaces starters each season for two or three seasons. When anyone looks at what Loomis has done this season, it is pretty clear it has been a "beat who you're supposed to beat with what you got" season. Loomis absolutely decided to start the silent rebuild this year and by 2027 the Saints will be fully in the green and Loomis will be ready to kick the can again and make Nick Wrong bald even more when he has the right combination of Head Coach and roster.

Don't give up hope. The NFL is cyclical. The Saints are in for a couple more down years that are the price of not resetting as soon as Payton left. But there is light at the end of the tunnel, unless you're a forever downer in which case why even bother watching?

Nah. We already won it all, never thought I’d live to see that. It’s all gravy now….has been since that Super Bowl win for me….and the 19 no call cemented it. Just entertainment now…..

Win or lose I’ll love em and expect nothing. Just as I did my whole childhood.

Hope is only lost when we "keep doing what we're doing" and what we're doing is crap. This season is lost, but when it's over a new hope begins for a great head coaching hire a great assembled staff and a great draft class. And if we get really lucky a new group of people in charge of the draft and cap strategy.
