The praise Jake Haener received during last year’s training camp was scripted. Or rather, the compliments were partly the product of a script.

The way the New Orleans Saints ran practices last summer, players could look at the practice script to see what plays the offense and defense were running ahead of time. So for a rookie quarterback like Haener, that information went a long way in providing answers to the test. He performed well in those circumstances, and teammates and coaches commended him.

But then when the preseason began, and there was no script to reference, Haener struggled. He didn’t process plays nearly as fast as needed. He hunted for big plays instead of taking the easy completions.

“When you get in the game situations, it kind of sets you up to fail because you don't know what's going on,” Haener said.

Haener isn't deflecting blame or throwing anyone under the bus. But things are different this year.

I heard that on the podcast and I was weirded out by that statement. Why would an offensive coach tell him what defensive plays will be run? Defeat the purpose of understanding and making adjustments on the fly. Pretty much what a NFL quarterback has to do. This was like giving the answers to an exam in highschool and expect those same questions will be on a national exams.

I have no idea why they would do that but this is why I called BS on a lot of the praise that people was trying to dump on Haener during those pre-season games. I felt a lot of it was tied to the manufactured narratives the media was putting out all through training camp but when you look at the games, it's no way we could be seeing the same thing..lol. But I also said that with all the hype about Rattler, we are missing that Haener might benefit just as much or more., from a change in offense.

the other side of the coin is, you don't want your offense feeling dominated going into the first game, you want them feeling confident (even if its fake confidence) because the offense always starts slower than the defense. With that said, i prefer the offense not know the play. It works here because our D will have their learning curve too vs this new scheme.

I like what I saw of Haener when he got some playing time. But another short QB is not what I’m looking for. We won’t ever be lucky enough to find another Drew Brees. Gimme a big, smart QB as our next starter.

As of today these are your choices:

Derek Carr 6'3", 215

Nathan Peterman 6'2", 225

Jake Haener 6'1", 200

Spencer Rattler 6'0", 211

I'm not concerned about size as much as I am about being smart. The ability to play the position at a high level is all that really matters.

Some may disagree but size isn't as important as using the tools you have to work with to the best of your ability. 🛠️

The only thing I can think of is that the staff was trying to teach the young players what to do against certain looks. This is a cover 2 look and this is the route option you should make when you see it based on this play call, etc.

It might say 6’1” in a media guide, but not with a real measuring tape.

No way Haener weighs 200 lbs. He's a buck 190. I'm less worried about his height than I am his slim frame, especially as poorly as out Olines have played in recent years.

I liked reading this: "Haener said he feels Kubiak’s system caters more to his strengths."

Reinforces the Saints' decision to move on from Carmichael and update the offense.
Carmichael’s system was stale and if we kept trying to force it on players we would have become irrelevant. Kubiak’s style is just the direction the league is going to.
