Jake Haener makes most of competition (Article) (1 Viewer)

Perspective. He’s closer to the camera.

Seems negligible.

Carr is average QB height at 6’3” and it’s not like he towers over Haener. What, are you worried he might only be 6’0” instead of 6’1”?

Either he can play or not.

Hopefully one day we will see if his intelligence for the position (and the game) will outweigh whatever physical limitations he may (or may not) have.

I think too much gets made of the supposed significant limitations of 6’0”ish QBs. I guess we got too used to hearing it repeated about Drew while he was busy building a legacy and rewriting NFL history.

There’s a point where height and size become a tougher limitation to overcome but that’s not at 6’ or 6’1”.

Perhaps that’s why I said in my post that it’s what I’m looking for.

And I was replying to your statements that you want a “big, smart QB” and you doubt that Haener is actually the height he’s listed at.

I just want players who help the team win, whatever their physical characteristics are. If Haener or Rattler don’t work out, it won’t be because of height.

Mahomes, Jackson, Purdy, Mayfield, Young, Murray, Tagovailoa, Hurts, Prescott, and Caleb Williams are starting or projected starting QBs, most of them drafted in the 1st round, and all are listed between 5’10” and 6’2”.

I like Haener. He may be the answer to our QB woes for the future. He seems to have the smarts to play the game. When we saw him play in the preseason it just appeared to me that he had the same problem as Drew experienced when trying to scan the field. Brees knew where his receivers were at all times and could hit his spots without seeing over his linemen. Maybe Haener can do the same. But maybe not.

Jake Haener’s a baller! Haener’s my fav players. Respect to Rattler, i think Jake is the better prospect & QB. Plus, the O we’re running is tailor made for his skillset. Dude is a quick decision maker, has a quick release, he sees the whole field & his football IQ is as good as it gets for a 2nd year dude. None of these articles about how good Haener looks really surprises me.

And maybe your perception of that issue isn’t entirely accurate?

A lot of QBs play at a very high level in his height range.

All QBs have some area of their game or stature to overcome, even if height isn’t an issue. Tall but slow. Tall but fragile. Tall but average or below average arm. Tall but slow processor.

As far as mental acuity, here's how Haener scored on the S2 Cognition Test (Wonderlic).

Jake Haener's S2 Cognition test Results

The S2 cognition tests have replaced the previously used Wonderlic scoring metric. Jake Haener scored a very high percentile of 96 on his S2 cognition test after the results were leaked. The S2 cognition test is designed to assess how rapidly a player can comprehend information.

As far as physical attributes, Haeners Relative Athletic Score

Jake Haener’s RAS Score

Jake Haener received a very high score on the relative athletic score or simply RAS.

The RAS combines a number of physical characteristics, such as strength, speed, agility, and the ability to jump, into a single score that is expressed as a percentile ranking.

As far as physical build, I'd put more trust in the NFL Combine measurements than most other sources, including your eye test from a photo.

What is Jake Haener's height and weight?

Jake Haener is listed as 6 feet and 0.75 inches tall and weighs 207 pounds as per his NFL Combine statistics.

If we are to be concerned about Haeners height at 6'1", shouldn't we also be worried about Rattlers height at 6'0"?

And this from the post by DavidM above:

I keep my distance at judging until preseason games. But so far based on last year preseason games Haener is decisive, which I like. But he needs to make better decisions. Great game against the Chargers but in the Texan game, he was throwing into coverage way too much and was inaccurate with those throws.

I stand corrected. I guess I didn’t see him play ‘short’ in his preseason debut. But like I said, he did play smart, made good decisions, and seems to have a good grasp of the game.

I hope he makes it as our starting QB for years to come.

I liked JH as a fit in our west option routes offense. It would take time and him getting 1st team reps for that to work. More of a timing/execution based with Kubiak. He fits better. Watching his reps hes twitchy and he throws a good ball on the move. He could be a good player. I know folks are excited about Rattler, Watching his tape hes got something but more flaws then Haener in my opinion. Purdy in a similar offense is on time, executes the play and the similar is the althetic twitchy ness.

Bill, I’m just doing my part to help you feel better about the shorter-but-not-too-short QBs. ;)

Would be great if both Haener and Rattler develop and the team has two promising prospects. You and I agree that odds are stacked against developmental QBs, though. Really tough position and most won’t make it long term.

Nothing really wrong with preferring a prototype - in an ideal scenario, who wouldn’t - but I think it gets overlooked just how many QBs succeed who fall below the average in height. Some observers make more of height than seems warranted.

I know that it can work because we had that very thing for over 15 years in Drew Brees. Can lightning strike twice in the same place?

Too bad we can’t just custom order a new QB who has Jake Haener’s brain with Josh Allen’s body.
