The problem with the Brees assessment is that he is hardly a neutral observer--what else would you expect him to day. It is unfair to judge him on one game. But it does seem the camp assessments by Duncan and Underhill were much too rosy. I do not question his intangibles. I do question his size and his arm strength, which to me seems marginal.

We had the Chiefs broadcast on TV. Didn’t even know Miller was hurt or who had or caught the ball. At least do play by play and let the color be all about the chiefs. It was turrible.
Glad to hear Brees had positives. He did calm down after the pick.

FWIW, Drew’s in-game opinion of the interception is Haener was looking for the back shoulder completion and didn’t get help from his receiver.

Huh?

Even Strief said during the broadcast that it would take a detailed eye like Drew to make sense of the INT. His arm strength while not Jameis is definitely better than marginal. Seems like you're going out of your way to downplay what was an above average outing for him.

While he came down to earth, that's to be expected vs a different looks than what he saw from the same defense day in and out. Stil, he displayed the moxie that Allen alluded to, as well as a short memory after the pick. His mobility translated on the first down conversion and he didn't take a sack (that I recall). He got through his progressions and looked about as poised in the pocket as a rookie can look. Also didn't hold the ball long, and trusted his eyes on a lot of throws.

Forgot to add, he operated the 2min offense very well!

The reason for this forum is to discuss respectfully our opinions, which on occasion may be different. I did not think Haener's performance was above average. I thought he looked like a small, middle-round, first-year quarterback.

I also think it unfair to judge his potential on the second half of the first exhibition game. But one of his camp admirers, Underhill, has already commented that he was surprisingly disappointed with his performance.

And regarding arm strength, l thought it borderline based on what I saw today. I know Strief at one point was praising his arm strength. But I do not put Strief and certainly not Brees in Deuce's category regarding candid evaluation. If you tell me that Deuce on his radio broadcast was praising Haener's arm strength, then I need to reconsider.

The ball that got batted down, I was screaming "Just step up!" Go watch some Dalton film from last year and do the opposite, young man. I like the kid :)

Isn't Strief working with Sean Payton? When did he comment about Haener?

I think the only observation I’d offer some disagreement about is describing his play as “above average” - though if you mean relative to rookie QBs making their NFL preseason debut, you could be right.

I thought Haener showed promise, however, and I think that’s all there is to reasonably hope for at this point in his journey.

His arm strength looked fine to me. It wasn’t something I really had concerns about but he had good velocity on his sideline throws and he rips the ball quickly and with confidence. If he doesn’t pan out, it won’t be because he can’t make the necessary throws.

had to listen to the Chiefs crew on Sirius driving back home and they were not impressed, if he takes screw ups to settle down then he can sit the year out. Makes me think Jeff Duncan calling him camp MVP confirms Jeff Duncan has bad judgment. Chiefs crew was also all over our DB's when the QB from South Dakota St was rolling down the field and not stuck on 3rd and long.
It was his first game. Holy crap. He made the drive happen to get the team back in the game. He didnt take stupid sacks and was decisive. He did better than every first round QB taken in this year's draft. Far better. Without 1st team oline or skilled players. And why do you listen to Jeff Duncan?

Right, not Strief. Someone else mentioned Strief and followed down that path. Stinchcomb.

His arm strength is good enough, He threw a 15yd out to the wide side of the field with zip and anticipation, A rocket arm is not really necessary
