Jake Haener (2 Viewers)

The ball seems to rocket out of his hands…..I was highly impressed

I only watched the first half and at that point he wasn’t having a good game but his arm strength was a surprise. Idk how his deep ball looks but he slung some darts at medium range.

Haener’s arm was as weak as advertised, if he did not play for the Saints we wouldn’t be talking about him at all. Only a Saints announcer would call that pass he made a “bullet”.

I’m surprised that’s your take. The consensus is he doesn’t have exceptional arm strength, and that’s certainly true. Curry described it as good but not great. Might be some outlier opinions that describe his arm as weak, but that seems like a lazy conclusion that if it’s not notably strong, it must be weak. From what I’ve read, most seem to think it’s average / good enough. I didn’t have concerns watching him today.

I thought Jake did ok with a lot of things that matter. He went through his progressions well and did not stare down Wr's. The ball for the most part went to the player it was supposed to. His arm strength is fine, for those that think you need a canon arm all I can do is SMH. He did NOT for the most part get much help from the WR's. On the 1st 3rd down Edwards should have caught it, it was a fast ball but hit him in the hands On the pick the WR was clueless. it was a back shoulder throw because the DB was even with him, WR was not even looking for the ball. There were a couple balls that could have been better, but also a WR fell down and one slowed his route when he should not have, plus if it's 3rd and 5 why do you run a 3yrd route ????.
I thought he did well in the 2 min drill. Made some good throws and decisions. On the roughing the passer he stood in and made a very good throw to the WR, even on the PI in the endzone I thought the throw was good and the WR had a good shot at making the catch if he was not held. Then the C snapped the ball wrong on the 2pt.
Jake was also playing with the bottom of the roster not even the 2nd stringers. All in all a decent to good performance for a 1st time out if you know what you're looking for. I really would like to see him play next week with the 2's and see his progress

Both CJ Stroud and Anthony Richardson also threw awful INTs on their opening drives this week. They're rookies. It happens.

Jake came back after the INT and played well which is pretty impressive poise for a rookie. He was clutch under 2min on a drive that would have tied the game if we did a PAT. He made quick decisions and was accurate with most of his passes. When the play wasn't there or the line was breaking down he moved the pocket rather than stand still and panic.

I'm not trying to call him a Dimond in the rough or anything, but I just don't see how you look at his performance today and see it as a net negative.

I like how he settled in and showed good poise in the 4’th quarter. Not bad for game one of his pro career. Not enough play to judge beyond that after one small sample size. Looking forward to watching him next week vs the Chargers and then the pre-season finally vs the Texans. Those two games he will definitely get lots of play time.

Compared to our recent QB draft pics (Canfield, Grayson, Stevens and Book), Haener just might stick around. Maybe more like Chase Daniel (UDFA) but I’m optimistic he might be even better than Daniel’s. I think he might have the right moxie for the NFL.

I think the only observation I’d offer some disagreement about is describing his play as “above average” - though if you mean relative to rookie QBs making their NFL preseason debut, you could be right.

I thought Haener showed promise, however, and I think that’s all there is to reasonably hope for at this point in his journey.

His arm strength looked fine to me. It wasn’t something I really had concerns about but he had good velocity on his sideline throws and he rips the ball quickly and with confidence. If he doesn’t pan out, it won’t be because he can’t make the necessary throws.
Touche, to middle with RJ I may be going out of my way to praise Haener. In a nutshell he looked competent, like he belonged.

He started off 2/7 with a pic. You could see he had a case.of the nerves in his first game. After that he went 8/10 with a TD when he settled down.

He finished 10/17 105 yards 1 pic and 1 TD

Yeah man, I was real impressed by Jake's poise today!!

He has real potential, he's just a gritty, smart football player.

Plus I ain't gonna complain about getting to talk with him after the game, and getting an autograph.

He's a real genuine dude, he spoke and gave this kid an autograph next to me, the kid started crying! It was super wholesome

The kid has the “it” feel to him in interviews. He doesn’t carry himself like a rookie and it doesn’t seem like the team responds to him like a rookie. They vibe with Jake. DA was spot on about his moxie. To go from an abysmal quarter of play to engineering that scoring drive was big for someone who’s never played at this level. Many of the stunted drives likely keep moving with the first or even the second string. His supporting cast was mostly terrible.

Haener absolutely played the best series I recall of any drafted QB we’ve had in the past 10 years. I’m not saying he’s the heir apparent, but it seems he’s certainly got legit NFL intangibles. That matters. I want to see him with better talent around him in the coming games. Let’s get a better feel of what he can really do.

It’s a small point of difference; mostly I agree with your take. And it’s quite possible your conclusion is accurate as worded. Haener very well might be above average this weekend for the rookie class of QBs. I won’t venture a guess on an historical baseline.

You and I agree that there were things to like and he showed promise. I’m not down on him at all.

Got to be impressed how he commanded the huddle. But he did look like he was mad all the time.

His first few snaps were super rough, but he eventually settled down and delivered when he needed to. I'm chalking up the rough start on simple nerves and speed of the game. Leading a game-tying drive as a rookie squares with what we've seen in camp.

I'd like to see more of him to see if he might have a future beyond a backup or 3rd string option, but his finish made up for the rocky start. He's going to have some rough patches, but as long as he makes plays and shows improvement, I haven't given up on him.
