Jared Goff and the Lions agree to 4 year $212M extension. (2 Viewers)

Crazy thing, before Laporta and Gibbs, they went from 3 to 9 wins, St. Brown was a part of the 3 win 2021 season, and majority of their O-line last season was from the Caldwell/Patricia years. The GM built well but coaching was the difference maker.
Laporta and Gibbs were the two guys to me that took them to the next level. Those aren’t small pick ups. Not saying the team isn’t well coached, they are for sure, but it’s hard to scew up when youre given that much talent. Top 5 wide receiver, top 5 running back, best tight end, maybe the best tackle..Not bad.

Like we were when Sean left and Drew retired? ;) Lions fans will take the short-term success they're currently enjoying.

I'm happy to see the long suffering Lions fans enjoying success, but I am even more happy to see other teams make poor decisions that increase the odds for future Saints success.

Gibbs is a beast but David Montgomery averaged nearly 5 yards per carry and had 13TDs himself. Gibbs is more dynamic in the pass game but Montgomery was no slouch. And the guy that Laporta technically replaced was TJ Hockenson.

Idk man. you and I and disagree about the impact of coaching all the time. It’s more about the players on the field for me. Players win games. Detroit has a lot of great players on offense. They’re not running any plays no one else has run before. It’s mainly the players executing it.

I was right about the Lions having in out after 2027.

I tend to agree with you. I always use Shanahan as the example since he is seen as one of the best coaches in the game right now.

49ers record with Purdy or Garoppolo starting: 55-21 (.724)
49ers record with any other starting QB: 9-30 (.231)

Change one player, and it's the equivalent of a 12-5 team compared to a 4-13 team. Coaches of 4-13 teams get fired. Of course, other players on the team are affecting the win totals, but Garoppolo was winning with the same teams that Mullens, Hoyer, Beathard, etc. couldn't win with.

Garoppolo record when he started less than half the games in the season: 9-5 (.643)
Other QB record in those same seasons: 7-27 (.206)

He had more wins with Garoppolo starting in 14 games than he could pull off with the QB carousel in 34 games.

It is fair to say that good coaches and good players make each other better, but coaching will not get it done alone. You may be able to string together some tough victories, but being a legitimate contender year after year can't be done without talent.

Look at Sean Payton, Bill Bellichik, and to some degree Nick Saban(when he was in the NFL)…Great coaches but they are nothing without great players around them.

Oh...I agree with you 100%. Execution has to be there and it's up to the coaches to ensure that they are prepared and also ensure that the players are put in position to succeed. Detroit has all the pieces needed to win a Super Bowl but that foundation was built on the culture that DC brought in (and Ben Johnson killing it..lol)

Crazy enough, Shanahan is probably used because he is the only coach considered an offensive genius that can produce such an anomaly. lol The reigning coach of the year won it because he made it to the playoffs with 5 different QBs (which confirms my thoughts that if we would have made the playoffs in 2021, CSP would have won coach of the year). I'm trying to think of any other coach considered an offensive genius that has such a disparity.

Sean Payton's Saints record without Drew is actually fantastic and Bill Belichick's issue in New England had a lot to do with coaching (seems like we forget they won 10 games with Josh McDaniels and then immediately crapped the bed offensively once he left)

Looking at it from a continuity standpoint, it's smart. They have good chemistry together and the window is big enough that making a commitment to keep all of their core players together for a run within the next couple of years is about as ideal as it gets. It's a smart gamble.

As good as Goff has looked in Detroit it’s still not great. Carr looking like good value now lol
Better than anything the Saints have tried the last few years at Quarterback.

Goff is reincarnated Matt Ryan... He's plenty good enough.... Just not really good enough.... This is just the price you now pay to keep competently good NFL QBs that "give you a chance to be in the SB"... Goff is one of those...

He got paid as such. The guys that get paid $100 to $150 Million (like Carr) are a step below that - They are the "may get you to the playoffs" QBs.

People are going to think that's crazy.... but that's what they are paid now. Those are the going rates. (Market)
I know this is a Saints board but this is Matt Ryan erasure. He proved he was plenty capable of winning it all. He’s a fringe HOF guy ffs

This fan base is spoiled by Brees. Goff and Ryan are both very good QBs.
Detroit is trying to win it all and Goff gives them the best chance to do that.
