Jeff Duncan on Sean Payton 2023 (1 Viewer)

It’s not gonna happen, don’t get your hopes up.

Payton literally has his pick of what team he wants. There’s only a few teams that don’t need a coach of his caliber

He doesn’t though and that’s why a return to New Orleans may be a possibility, if unlikely. Only teams with a vacancy are an option and most vacant jobs come with big problems. The Chargers or Dallas would be an exception but I think it’s unlikely at this stage that either job becomes open. And if they don’t, does Payton have the patience to wait for something that might not happen any time soon? I’d wager that the answer is no given what he said the other day.

I’d argue the sole, big issue with our job is we have no QB. Well that is instantly solved by signing Tom Brady for a year or two. You throw in that the fan base loves him and Mrs Benson would likely make him the highest paid coach in NFL history then I think there’s a chance. Would all seem too good to be true though, so it won’t happen and we’ll get another year of Allen.

While he does have his choice of head coach, few jobs give him as much control as the Saints do and even fewer owners are willing to spend money like Mrs. Benson. Maybe he'll see the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence.

If Dallas bomb out in the playoffs again and Payton is to sign there, that city will throw a street parade that rivaled Hulk Hogan when he signed with WCW in 1994.

No they wouldn't, not unless he wins a super bowl there.

It'll depend on what jobs come open in December but.

Chargers - they don't pay top dollar and Payton would likely take a pay cut from what we were paying him last year

Dallas - Payton would have less control, just because of JJ

Cardinals - how does Payton really feel about the roster and Murray?

Not saying he comes here or even has to coach in 2023 but we may be the most attractive, depending on what we give in concessions

The League/Goodell/Refs will never allow us to win or sniff another championship.
Please don’t let all the conspiracy folks around here make you think the Saints organization is the hated stepchild of the league. Goodell couldn’t care less about what the Saints do; good or bad. We aren’t living rent free in his head. All he wants from every franchise is that they keep the money pipeline flowing.

The problem with these theorists is that they believe every officiating screw up has a method to the madness. But these same folks live in a very small world and fail to see (or accept) that equality bad officiating happens across the board for & against EVERY team in the league. But they only take note when we are the victims of egregiously bad calls & no calls.

The NFL wants the human element to remain in the game. They always have. Of course they do need to be on the lookout for any official who may have a sportsbook app on his phone. Individual referees could be tempted to favor a team that would give them an advantage in the gambling world. Such things have happened before and are likely to happen again.

However it’s hard to imagine that most officials are willing to ruin such a good thing as their cushy NFL gig just for a shot that they won’t get caught being tied to a big payoff.

But the league (or Goodell himself) is not interested in promoting one franchise at the expense of another franchise. This would be especially true in regard to the Saints who were once raking in some of the highest ratings of any of the 32 teams. Our success in the TV market share was the single biggest reason the Saints were regularly being scheduled with 5 to 7 primetime nationwide broadcasts each year. It literally makes no sense to deliberately want to destroy your cash cow.

Do yourself a favor and read the fan sites of other losing teams each week. I promise you that you will find nearly the same number of threads discussing the ‘fixed calls’ and why the league hates their team so much.

Just don’t allow all these butthurt fans around here fool you into thinking that we are truly the NFL’s whipping boy.

Now that the Chargers have the last Wild Card and keep it, do they still fire Staley?
And McCarthy may have bought another year.

If the jobs that Payton would be willing to accept are no longer as ‘available’ due to that team being willing to ride with their current head coach, that would obviously bolster the intrigue surrounding Sean’s next move. If he wants to be back as a head coach badly enough it might open the door to his reconsideration of coaching here again. I mean he definitely had a pretty good command of things when he was here. But I just find it hard to believe that he is so desperate to get back into coaching that he wouldn’t just wait until he can get the job he’s really interested in.

I think this Duncan story is much ado about nothing.

Or maybe he goes to a team with a competent QB, two all pro DE and a weak division like the AFC west where he can become the next Bill B and dominate a weak division.

Much like Payton did his entire career in NOLA, smokescreens to drive up the narrative he wants

I understand how easy it is for Sean to manipulate the minds of the ‘win hungry’ fans. But does Payton really have so much control over our front office that he can come & go as he pleases? It’s hard for me to imagine that he could hire and fire whomever he wants while he’s no longer attached to this organization.

I mean, what if Loomis likes his new head coach better than his old one??? Wouldn’t he have to fill out an application and be scheduled for an interview in order to be hired just like anyone else?

The fans needs to understand that he really can’t make his own call in regard to getting his old job back.

You also have to consider the draft capital another team has to give up to get him. You think he wants to go to a team with picks for a couple years as well?

I think he's googly eyed at Caleb imo.

Just to add to this. The NFL isn’t like the NBA or MLB. TV ratings don’t change when a small market gets in. Sure, there may be a “Cowboys bump” but it doesn’t justify doing all the work to tilt everything against the small market teams.

Actually, he doesn't. The Saints can refuse to release him from his contract even if suitable draft pick compensation is offered in trade. The Saints hold the cards in where and when he coaches again.

If SP does come back, the Saints need to STOP the way they're handling the salary. Hint: It's not working. At the moment, the will have to trim 60 million to get under the cap. Every year we brag on Loomis for moving the piles of beans around to make it happen but this recipe for success is obsolete.
We need a proven coach and a franchise QB to move forward.

I've seen some epic troll jobs from the court jester before, but this one takes the cake!
