Jeff Duncan on Sean Payton 2023 (1 Viewer)

Is there a rule that says the HC can’t be the DC the next year? No. This would be one of the most unique situations we’ve seen in the NFL and the Saints front office will be flexible if they need to. If you’re DA you either accept that you’re better off focusing all of your time on the defense or get an ego and risk not having a job at all in 2023 🤷‍♂️ I’m willing to bet he would gladly return back to DC if we were able to bring back SP
Obviously there isn’t a rule that says that, it’s just basic common sense. When has a coordinator ever stepped up to be a HC, then got fired after a year and immediately returned to their old role? It’s never happened because it’s a stupid idea, why would you force Nielsen and Richard out for a guy who’s just led you to a terrible season? Not to mention, DAs credibility would be hugely damaged and I can’t see how any player on defense could take him seriously. Absolute non-starter.

I just don’t see why the coaching staff would all have to go down in flames simply by SP returning. You’d simply have the current coaches go back to their 2021 duties. Some lesser known coaches may have to take the brunt of it down the food chain but I don’t see why you’d have to let Allen, Nielsen or Richard go just by having SP come back

It’s not about letting them go, Nielsen and Richard aren’t simply going to accept being demoted from their current role for a guy who failed. They’d both choose to leave, or look incredibly weak. There isn’t any business where someone gets promoted to the top job then demoted after a year like nothing happened.

DA is still essentially our defensive coordinator anyway. He’s clearly still calling the defensive plays on game day. Sure they would lose “co- DC coordinator” title but it’s not like they’re truly the DC’s anyway. Or we could just make Allen Assistant Head Coach and Nielsen/Richard keep their DC title

If Payton did come back and it's a big if. I'd totally still sheetcan Allen.

He's not that good a DC and no one on this team respects him anymore. He has to go.
I dunno, he's fine as a DC. That said, I'm not sure he's gonna stay on and take the demotion.

Smoke screen to drive up his price IMO. The Saints hold all the cards so why not start another rumor his is coming back.

No logic in that, all driving his price up does is result in the team he goes to having to give up more assets for him.

Ppl can project their thoughts as to what SP thinks and wants and even what his wife wants. Stop. Go with the facts. 1) Loomis is his best football friend. 2) Here he’d make all of the decisions. 3) I don’t think any human being would purposely chose another location with more scrutiny, say under Jerry Jones for example. Remeber there are ppl that aren’t sold that it wasn’t Bree’s that made him. So under another owner, he may only have a 3 year window. 4) Nola crime and mean streets? NFL coaches work a tremendous amount of hours. They rarely see the light of day anyway. if he wants a sunny locale he could follow Brees to SD in the offseason. 5) is San Diego’s Billy Joe Herbert, enough for SP to forget about the above? What if Herbert got injured in training camp? just saying, I’m in the NOLA or retired permanently camp.

He has screwed his job as being the Raiders HC, he screwed his HC job this year, he won't get a third shot elsewhere as being a HC for sure.
He proofed being a good choice as a DC.
He would be crazy to stay on the path looking for a HC job when he was fired here.

Crazy speculation. Maybe everything is a done deal, and everyone was aligned before - SP gets his sabbatical - DA becomes the interim solution - this is also why we haven't announced a new DC, but only two CO-DCs - and this is why ML hasn't fired DA already - everything to provide SP a smooth return.

I have seen many examples - ok, not inside the NFL - but during my career, where promotions would be cancelled and the promoted person steps back in the old job role, because he/her was to good in his old - but a clear peter princible candidate in the new.

You still have to do the Rooney Rule interviews/candidate.
Why? Complete waste of time. Payton is better than any other prospect at HC. With that said, Payton isn't coming back.

He tried to leave before Brees retired, he has no 1st rd pick, no QB, we are in cap hell, the roster needs an overhaul, the medical staff is garbage, the weather is 200 degrees with humidity, the city is run by idiots, and he can literally choose any team he wants. He wanted out of the organization, not out of coaching.

Payton on Kyler Murray when he was coming out. Wouldn't rule out Arizona either.

I’ve thought Arizona ever since his interview with Cowherd.

Summary:

Colin: is Kyler Murray a problem?

SP: hey Colin, did you know I used to be a Cardinals ball boy and I know the Bidwell family really well???

Man still can’t keep his mouth shut, lol.

If CSP comes back I honestly don’t think he would gut the coaching staff, he would cherry pick the coaches he liked….and I find it extremely unlikely that DA would be retained….would like to see Kris Richard promoted to DC though….
