Jeff Duncan on Sean Payton 2023 (1 Viewer)

If CSP comes back I honestly don’t think he would gut the coaching staff, he would cherry pick the coaches he liked….and I find it extremely unlikely that DA would be retained….would like to see Kris Richard promoted to DC though….
Yeah, I agree. I tend to think he'd rather rebuild the staff. That said, sometimes it's hard for coaches to change. Most of the current staff, he probably knows very well. Curious to see what he does if he returns.

The people who think their is no way CSP is coming back are assuming he left because of the roster situation, lack of QB, and his wife didn't want to live in NOLA. All of that is speculation, what if he truly was burned out and just needed a year of sabatical to recharge, focus on his new wife and himself? Then him coming back is not too far fetched. Maybe it was part of the plan. Take your year off, we'll promote from within and see how it goes that way if you decide you're ready to come back its not too hard to slide you back in to the top post again.

Actually, he doesn't. The Saints can refuse to release him from his contract even if suitable draft pick compensation is offered in trade. The Saints hold the cards in where and when he coaches again.

Right.

He can also wait until he contract runs out, which I believe is the following year and sign where he pleases.

It's not speculation. He is NOT coming back here. He wants no part of the Saints organization. That's why he left. It wasn't being burnt out because he was talking to Miami this year. Payton is finished with the Saints.

There's really three reasons I could think of that Payton would not want to be with the Saints.

1. The city. You can complain, but it's probably the least desirable city in the NFL right now with the current crime wave.
2. Weak owner. Gayle has zero clout in the NFL and we get screwed constantly.
3. No QB.

I really think it's No. 1 though.

If Number One was an issue, he could’ve left a decade earlier when the League voided his contract.

Well, number-1 is flat-wrong. And Mrs B is one of the best owners in the league when it comes to giving coaches what they want (control and $).

I’ll give you number-3, tho.

DA is still essentially our defensive coordinator anyway. He’s clearly still calling the defensive plays on game day. Sure they would lose “co- DC coordinator” title but it’s not like they’re truly the DC’s anyway. Or we could just make Allen Assistant Head Coach and Nielsen/Richard keep their DC title
Having an ‘Assistant head coach’ with Sean Payton back at the helm would basically mean ‘Juicy Fruit getter’. :hihi:

I am guessing the OP was talking more about pull as in Jerry Jones/Robert Kraft type pull. But unfortunately I think that has more to do with the markets they are in than anything.

Right.

That would defeat the entire purpose of a contract in any field. If it's not being fulfilled, then it's either being voided or held until the said terms are fulfilled. His contract is essentially paused. I'd think, at least. I've tried looking this up and got nowhere, but I've certainly signed enough contracts to that doesn't sound right.

I get it. I just think if you’re looking at an owner, Mrs B checks more important boxes for what SP is looking for.

Just saying looking at her being “weak” is extremely unfair and not really pertinent to what SP has made it clear he’s looking for. In fact, I kinda think SP likes being the modern Al Davis, thorn-in-Goodell’s side.

Theoretically, that's after the 2024 season - two more seasons. However, when Arians "retired" from Arizona, he sat out the final year on that contract - 2018. Then when Tampa wanted to hire him in 2019, the Cardinals said that they retained his rights and Tampa had to send a 6th round pick to get his rights because Arians was never officially terminated with time remaining on his contract. I think the same would hold true with Payton. The longer Payton is away from coaching, I believe the value of pick compensation goes down though.

I agree here.

I’ve yet to see concrete confirmation on this. But nearly all contracts are written for services rendered over a period of time.

If you’re not actually doing the job, then simply running out the clock wouldn’t fulfill the contract. There would have to be some specific clauses on that.
