Jeff Duncan on Sean Payton 2023 (1 Viewer)

Time just expiring out on his deal may not be how this works, unless the Saints allow it to happen. The Saints can easily contest that the duration of their rights to him continue to remain the same no matter how long he sits out. The rights are frozen in time.

Sean isn't going to sit out for more than a year. I think the plan was already in place when we used our first pick this year to trade up and grab Olave. We knew that we could recoup that pick with Sean's trade. The bad thing is no one saw it as a top 5 pick, there were playoff aspirations. We see how that's play out. The #1 landing spot in S.D. is currently the holder of the 20th pick, yuck. We need the Jets or N.E. to jump them and that way we at least are guaranteed the 18th pick. A guy like Andre Carter would be there and if you have an opportunity to draft him, you run up the podium with that selection. Get a Minshew, or heck, Dalton for one more year and make a huge push to draft Williams in 24. Then we have Caleb Williams, a still young Kamara, Olave, Shaheed, and a decently young offensive line in front of em. That can be some great building blocks for our future and remain as a contender with only 2 down years in between a coaching regime change as Jim Harbaugh leads us in to the future.

Sadly it’s hard to know sometimes who really buys into all that conspiracy stuff. Yes, there is plenty of reason for frustration this year. I’m right there with you.

You are a favorite poster of mine. I’m glad you really understand. :9:
Oh wow, how nice of you!!😊 Again thanks for being understanding and kind with your critique.

It’s not about letting them go, Nielsen and Richard aren’t simply going to accept being demoted from their current role for a guy who failed. They’d both choose to leave, or look incredibly weak. There isn’t any business where someone gets promoted to the top job then demoted after a year like nothing happened.
Unless everyone in the building knew CSP was going on a temp. sabatical and coming back and took the promotion knowing it was temporary.

Right.

He can also wait until he contract runs out, which I believe is the following year and sign where he pleases.
That has not been determined. Most think if he were to try and do that it would end up in court.

Or maybe he goes to a team with a competent QB, two all pro DE and a weak division like the AFC west where he can become the next Bill B and dominate a weak division.

Much like Payton did his entire career in NOLA, smokescreens to drive up the narrative he wants
AFC West is weak? Um the Chiefs play in that division and have owned it for the last 6 years. Chargers haven't won it in over a decade. Payton will never be able to dominate it as long as Mahomes is playing.

NFC West is an even rougher division.

There literally isn't a worse division in football than the NFC South and Brady is about to leave Tampa a wreck. The only game we were truly outclassed in was against the Ravens, a competent coach would have this QBless team rolling. And we all saw what he was able to do with two of the QB's that's already on the team.

Give us the cliff notes
He is open to coming back but has also explored all his options. He has broken down the Saints moves this year, front office decisions, coaching on the field, evaluated players but also has done this with several other teams. Can't move forward without deciding on head coach, whether to move on from DA. Duncan attended a media lunch with Saints brass and they poked fun of him for his article.

That has not been determined. Most think if he were to try and do that it would end up in court.
Yep. Some have said his rights go into perpetuity. As he didn’t fulfill the contract.

I know it’s a pipe dream but it’s given me hope. I’ve lost pretty much all feeling about the game, if Sean comes back it will reinvigorate me.

My son asked me if I thought it would really happen, sadly had to tell him no. He’s not a Saints fan but he is hoping Sean comes back because he’s not used to seeing his father apathetic about football. Lol

I'd love to see something conclusive on this. It would make sense that he signed a 5 year contract and that those years have to be fulfilled no matter what "years" they fall under. I sure hope that's the case.
No expert but I truly believe that’s the case. Hopefully doesn’t come to that as I’d love to have him back, or if not, have some good picks for him this next season.
