Job Satisfaction (6 Viewers)

well there's your career change - you should totally go back to school for microbiology just to pwn that surfer dude with the amazing teeth
After she gets her degree she can go find him in a beach side cafe, and then slap the degree on the outside of the window next to where he's sitting and be like, "How do you like them apples?"

1) You do that ?

2) ive always though that incontinence referred to patients’ inability to control their urine (?). Is there ‘urinary incontinence’ and ‘fecal incontinence’ ?? TIL…..
There is incontinence of both bowel and bladder. As I tell my interns “you will be peed on, pooped on, vomited on, spat on, and bled on. So bring a change of clothes”

Yup, over my 20 years it’s all happened to me multiple times :hihi:

LOL no, I do not. I told him I was a molecular biologist so that he would feel like an azzzzhole for saying "I'm not getting scientist vibes, you must be management".

It would have been like me taking a look at his physical appearance only and saying "I'm not getting employed vibes. You must be a trust fund child". Because he had a typical CA surfer vibe/look to him.

I googled his phone # and saw he does some sort of real estate advertising stuff and he's from Orange County...

"Tell em, tell em, there's junkies, winos, pimps and whores in Orange County too".

I have been thinking a lot about this thread. I forgot to mention in my diatribe how much my job has affected my life (drinking) and has done its best to ruin my marriage. In my industry the saying is "By 50, you will either have a heart attack, get divorced or both." When I was 23, I scoffed. Now I understand.

I asked my brother this question:

His bio:

Maxillofacial surgeon / general dentist- has a MDDS after graduating Summa toss custard Laude from Tufts Medical in Boston. Went in the Navy as a Commissioned Medical Officer so he has had zero student debt.

Owns his own dental and surgery center in Colorado Springs with 17 dental chairs, an associate dentist, a OR nurse, and twelve techs. Owns the building he is in and has four tenants.

Suffice it to say he is doing well.

His clinic is open 6 days a week works three days a week and a half day every third Friday.

He spends his free time looking at houses in Southern California -where he is retiring - and hating his job too.

He has acute tinnitus from the drill and chronic neck pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. He spent the last 22 years building his practice, in a city he hates (we grew up there so that is where he had an associate job out of school) and can't wait to leave. He says dealing with people in the medical manner has made him bitter towards the whole human race. Apparently, if you introduce tooth pain to the general public, they aren't always well behaved. Insurance companies telling him what he can or can't do for someone. Billing and collections.

Like I said the last time; it really doesn't matter what you do. Work is soul sucking.

ETA- the language filter grabbing the Latin for "with highest honors" and making it tossing custard made my whole day. Thanks @Andrus

I don't think I've ever heard the term "toss custard" before, but I think seeing how it was used here might have made my day, too.

I could literally feel the discouragement in your post as i read it.. that sucks.. the one thing id say is dont beat yourself up to much for leaving your 911 job; you said you were burnt out, and you made the best decision you knew at the time with the information you had…. That’s all any of us can do.. i think your situation and disillusionment says more about the system that is set up than it does about you … i think we all struggle to find meaning and purpose at one time or another.. when i first began my most recent journey a few years ago, during Covid, it all began with a simple thought that i have since repeated to myself a thousand times : “There has GOT to be a better way… There just has to .”

This may not be a problem much longer. My boss has just scheduled a meeting with me on Monday to discuss my "future in the company." Both HR reps, my direct boss, and the head of engineering are also in the meeting. I guess there is a small chance they are doing something nice? Doesn't seem good though.

17 chairs ? Jesus Christ .. ive been in the Dental industry for a long time, almost 20 yrs, in one position i worked almost exclusively with oral surgeons like ur brother.. that’s a big practice.. and he owns the building ?? Yeah that’s rare, and extremely successful .. kind of wild that he’s that unhappy while working around 14 days per month .. but i get it.. what’s interesting is that , while ive made only a fraction of the money your brother must be making- i have actually had jobs where, while not perfect- i actually enjoyed them and they weren’t soul sucking .. than again, i have also had jobs that were soul sucking.. i think it’s highly dependent on the company and your personal circumstances.. dentists though do have one of the highest suicide rates of any profession .

Yeah it’s way over the top.. i try not to complain here too much since i realize andrus does the best he can with what he has- but wow is the auto-correct/predictive text whatever on here beyond terrible.. sometimes the words it changes things to when i make a wrong keystroke is hilarious .. ive never seen anything like it .

While it could always be better for me, and I feel like I should be further along than where I am in my career, I do have an interview for another, higher level position in my agency next week. It would effectively be a pay raise and my role would be mostly the same with a few added responsibilities.

I like some aspects of my job and hate others. It's a bit of a mixed bag. That said, other than when I was working in ministry, this is probably the best job I've ever had.

It's funny though, I would take a pay cut to move back to Lafayette. All these years later and I still miss it. Just overall lower cost of living by a lot and generally less stressful. And I need less stress in my life, lol.
