Jon Gruden as replacement OC? (1 Viewer)

And you see how stale the offense was last year, Pete is not an innovative mind and calling the plays designed by one is why he never got the call to coordinate any other team and why when the innovative mind left the building so did the creativity on offense, Gruden is here to inject some ideas and concepts as an unemployed innovative mind to help Pete with play designs and concepts.

I hope he is being blind copied on emails and someone leaves their cell phone on the table during meeting so Gruden can hear and still be involved during the regular season....without being an official employee of the Saints.
Hearing him not wanting to be a coordinator is not reassuring to me. If our offense struggle early on, a change needs to be made right away.

I still like and believe in Sneaky Pete. Grudens personality would get in the way. Dennis Allen is under a lot of pressure right now. Can you imagine the pressure he would be under with Gruden on the staff.
This would be a legit concern. But it had to be DA's idea to invite Gruden to camp. Can't imagine anybody else making that call. These guys are professionals and know each other and all the personality pitfalls. I doubt Chucky will be invited in as anything other than an observer/consultant, but if he were offered a real role on the team, it would be DA's decision to make.

As far as Gruden taking a coordinator job.... "IF" he wants back in for whatever reason, thats his most likely path.

I wouldnt have a problem with it.

Yeah...I agree Pete isn't an innovative mind, I think much of the "genius" stuff that gets attached to his name is just fluff and sunshine pumping. People like to say Pete called a great offense when CSP was hurt...but completely ignore that CSP was hurt...not dead and was around for the weekly gameplanning and we had Brees in the building. The bountygate year? we were behind alot - and we had Drew Brees...I just feel like he isn't a leader in a place where we need a leader on that side of the ball...Last year was a prime example of what missing/fractured leadership leads to. No accountability & brainfart mistakes.

Then again maybe Gruden is the guy to bring some of that back....but how would the players feel about it?!?!?! Because didn't the players in LV sort of "revolt" after his little leak?

Pete called CSP plays, he did not design them and that has always been my argument.

Not a chance at this point. If they were going to install a new offense, it would have been done already.

I wouldn’t mind it personally, but right now? Wouldn’t be very smart.
There wouldn’t be any new overall offense installation. Gruden runs the same offensive concepts and familiar with Carr, hence him consulting and observing with Carr and the offensive staff this offseason. He was brought in earlier in the offseason during OTAs to help install the offense.

Is there something less than 0%? Jon Gruden would never return to football as an assistant anything. He won a Super Bowl for crying out loud. If Allen falls on his face, Gruden becomes the number 1 option to replace him.

Gruden’s offense is pretty similar to what we’ve run for years. It’s the terminology that’s most different. That said, he’s been here multiple times now, and been communicating with Carr and the staff for months. Any transition that was needed like,y already started weeks ago, or more.

People have really strong opinions about a coordinator who was great calling plays for Drew Brees, and disappointing with a declining Andy Dalton on the field, leading a battered squad, and still finishing 19th in offense.

What we know about him is a toss up so I'll wait and see what he can do with better talent to work with.

The Saints have a history of bringing in notable coaches as advisors. Relationships can lead to opportunities but it's a giant leap, at this point, to make more of the Gruden invitation.

I’ll say this, while it’s good to get an outsider’s perspective on certain players/offense strategy etc……it could have an adverse affect as well. Having Gruden around the team, adds familiarity. If DA wets the bed early this season, then I could see Gruden sliding right into his spot. Not saying that would be an ideal situation, but you can never dismiss that that COULD happen.

I like Gruden, but I would prefer to go with a younger coach.

Yeah...but I feel like that's jumping out of the fire into a Volcano. We're just getting from under the thumb of hte league w/ CSP gone...do we really want that kind of smoke from New York?

I would be fine with it. If things don’t go great this year DA is going to have one more chance. That’s replacing the OC. He’s going to need a big hire like Payton did with Gregg Williams. Generally great OCs are difficult to find because they get HC jobs. You have to take a chance on an unknown or get one who was fired as HC.

I'm not going to worry about something that doesn't have a good chance of happening. A meteor COULD crash into the practice facility and kill the whole team, doesn't mean I'm going to worry about it happening.
