Jon Gruden as replacement OC? (5 Viewers)

Won't happen. These are the reasons:

1. The reasons that Gruden left Las Vegas make him politically a tough hire. They are the reason we have not seen in a TV booth.

2. I think he would consider the position of offensive coordinator too much of a step-down given his years as head coach.

3. Gruden later this month will be turning 60. He should not need the money.

Why are you always debating semantics? "I think" is an implied guess.

Are you guessing, or is this just a figment of your imagination? Asking for a friend.

You seem to have taken this personally in a way it wasn't intended. I'm not debating semantics, I was seeking clarification.

You said: "I don't think Pete is here for long anyway. He will soon retire, he loves New Orleans and wants to stay here, with a less pressured job."

There was the appearance of a familiarity to the subject and to Carmichael's interests and intentions that could infer some source of knowledge, so I asked. I already explained why I had asked but realize now that my asking must have really annoyed you.

I'm not sure how you think that compares to my saying: "My hope is that Carmichael gets it going because if he does, that could alleviate an offensive coaching carousel that other defensive head coaches have to deal with."

Agree with the first reason but then that reason sets the conditions for why, if he ever does get another opportunity in the NFL, and he wants back in, it will likely have to be in a reduced role.

Many coaches work past 60, often well past, and without needing the money, so I don't think his age is necessarily a factor.

That's going to be true throughout the Payton years if that's the observation you're resting on. (And generally true of this era of football.) I already pointed out that there were eleven games over the next two seasons where the Saints failed to score at least 21 points vs that happening twice in 2012. Considered as a measuring stick of performance to this specific point, that's not meaningless.

As it is, the 2012 defense was historically bad while the offense performed at a high level relative to the rest of the league that year, and consistent with the expected standard under Payton.
I understand that. I'm just saying that 2012 is a crazy season because as bad as the defense was, the offense was probably more responsible for majority of the loses that season. I just remember thinking that we were not a good 4th quarter team that season.

-Washington game - Our offense was not the best that night and we were down 20-7 before the blocked punt. 2nd half was more of the same
-Panthers game - a lot of crap
-Chiefs - It's easy to put this game on the defense since Jamaal Charles matched our net yard output alone (lol..crazy when you think about it) and let them comeback from 24-6 but the fact is we did not shut the game out. After that crazy Charles run, our offensive production was INT, 3&Out, 3&Out, and safety that allowed the tie. The defense only allowed 1 TD the entire game.
-Broncos - We just got destroyed
-49ers - We lost by 10 points and 14 of their points came on pick-6s
-Falcons - The worst game I've ever seen Drew play :(
-Giants - We just got destroyed here as well. Was the defense good this game? Not really but truth is, the Giants defense owned our offense that game. We had more turnovers than touchdowns.

There were several other seasons with Payton at the helm, and games throughout his tenure, where the same kind of analysis could be done, which is what I'm pointing out. And while it doesn't get talked about much, as great as Brees was, he had some awful outings in his career. So it's not that I think your observations are wrong, I just don't think they make any particular case against Carmichael for the job he did that season.

Just a random question… would anyone have a problem with it? The Saints have brought people in to “help” then give them a coaching spot later on. Also keep in mind, Pete didn’t want the OC job to begin with.
I have a problem with it. We thought the NFL didn't like us when we had Payton, just think if we went back to back with Payton and Gruden. I say let him break back into the league as OC with somebody else, and then if DA doesn't work out, go get Gruden for HC after he has done penance.

The year SP brought in Gruden to camp in a advisory role.. the Saints had the best offense in its history.

Unless you all forgot him saying Graham runs like a gazelle.

Naw....nope....nada interest....

I'm probably in the minority here, but I consider Gruden a highly overrated coach.....

As I've said before, I'm split on it because what would we be expecting from Gruden being the OC?

The seasons the Raiders ran his offense (2018-2021), they were 23rd in total points and 27th in total touchdowns while being 10th in total yards.

Perhaps I read the post incorrectly. We are ok, I was mistaken.

I am happy to share my thoughts on the subject though. All speculation on my part. I would place a 80% chance Pete will move on next yr for a variety of reasons. He is married to a La gal, and really loves New Orleans, but from the actions in the past, like not interviewing for HC jobs, as 3 teams were willing to sit down and interview him.

He said he wanted no consideration for the Saints HCing job. Then kind of ducked the OC job. I think he is here this year to support DA, till he can find a friendly face among the NFLs staff change overs for our new OC. Pete has been here 14yrs. I would not be surprised if he took a job in the Saints front office, so he could spend more time with his family.

Not a rumor...he didn't want to be OC, we interviewed Jay Gruden for the "vacant" job last offseason. Pete wanted to fade back to the backshop and ride out his time:

Pete said he wanted no part of the HCing consideration, then they made him the QB coach, till someone in the Saints organization intervened and Pete got the OC job.

Not sure I knew about his wife’s connection to the state, that’s good insight. Thanks for the reasoned take and helping me understand your thoughts more clearly.
