Jon Gruden as replacement OC? (2 Viewers)

People have really strong opinions about a coordinator who was great calling plays for Drew Brees, and disappointing with a declining Andy Dalton on the field, leading a battered squad, and still finishing 19th in offense.

What we know about him is a toss up so I'll wait and see what he can do with better talent to work with.

The Saints have a history of bringing in notable coaches as advisors. Relationships can lead to opportunities but it's a giant leap, at this point, to make more of the Gruden invitation.
Was it really that great though?
We had some really high high's that season but also really low low's. We were not consistent that season.

It could be the same thing as when Dennis Allen was brought in as a defensive advisor under Rob Ryan and eventually replaced him.

Could say that about any season. They finished 2nd in yards and 3rd in points, which maintained the standard the team had set offensively. They did it in a season of turmoil where I think few people would have been shocked had the bottom completely fallen out. Carmichael has been good on other occasions, too, and obviously won over Payton's trust, and the organization's trust, to have stuck around all this time.

Mostly, though, I'm waiting to see what he can do with the roster he has this year. I completely soured on Dalton pretty early into last season and I expect Carr to be a meaningful upgrade. I'm optimistic about WR, TE, and RB and keeping fingers crossed about the OL.

you trippin hard, that was our greatest offensive season we blew out the Colts 62-7 that year

That game was in 2011 when Payton voluntarily turned over play calling duties, but it was a great performance all-around. Carmichael was the play caller for 2012 when Payton was suspended, and has called other games here and there (IIRC).

Well, the difference is Allen was hired in January of 2015 as a "senior defensive assistant", a salaried member of the coaching staff, and went on to replace Ryan when he was fired midseason, where as Gruden was here as a temporary advisor.

Yeah...you right...2011/12 was a weird blur, high of the highs followed by a ridiculous low point (bountygate) right after a kick in the balls from the SF div game.

2012, not sure how I feel about the offense that season...the games we won were because we were able to establish our offense particularly the run game...but the games we lost which outnumbered those wins we struggled early offensively, defense sucked as usual and we had to throw like mad men to keep up. - leading to stat bloat.

I just don't want to look to 11 years ago for proof that Pete is capable, I'm a what have you done for me lately type of guy. We'll see what this year brings. <- about as sunshine-y pumpy I can be

We had two games in 2012 (Carmichael calling) where we scored fewer than 21 points. Six games under 21 in 2013 and Five games under 21 in 2014. I'm not going to dig around and try to analyze special teams and defensive scoring because the overview, and the final production, doesn't at all indicate 2012 as some kind of down year outlier from that period.

I would imagine if Pete really didn’t want the job still, especially after last year, he wouldn’t have it this year.

Agreed, and we really don't know what was going into his decision-making. Taking time to consider his future doesn't mean he doesn't want to be here or whatever else it can get twisted into.

That was my first thought but with how his exit from the NFL was. I can see him using this position as a way back in. Just like that Miami coach that sued the NFL too(I’m forgetting his name at the moment)
Payton leaves and we get from under Rodgers thumb for one season, and these guys are "hot for teacher" the second most hated coach in the NFL's dog house. Have we not learned anything?

I just remember us losing a bunch of games due to craziness. Crap, Drew was losing games throwing interceptions, the safety that allowed the Chiefs to tie (even though Jamaal Charles trashed our defense. He was so freaking good), the 2 pick-6 game, the Falcons game, getting blown out by the Broncos and Giants. It was just craziness.

I don't think Pete is here for long anyway. He will soon retire, he loves New Orleans and wants to stay here, with a less pressured job. I think he will do a good job this season though. But, we really need to look for his replacement, and Pete leaving would provide a clean break from "the Sean system." We need to move into a more modern offensive system. Gruden as OC would just move us side ways w/ the same system we have been running for the last 14yrs.

Is this based on anything or just your own speculation?

Drew threw for 5000 + yds 43 TDs, now a lot of that stat line is in games we were losing in. But, 5000 + yds (3rd most in Saints history) and 43 TDs (2nd most in Saints history) is a fine achievement and an offensive season for the ages!!!!!!!!!!!!

With the worst defense in NFL history up until that time. The Worst!!! That was how good that offense was. The NFL screwed us royally.
