Keeping Kubiak (Merged) (1 Viewer)

Which is why in today’s NFL it’s better to have an offensive HC

I'm not sure what theathas to do with the fact that there is no path for Kubiak to be the next head coach of the Saints.

Anyway, it can work either way. If you have a Defensive head coach you can attract young OCs that want to be head coaches and don't want to be thought of as just carrying the water for their Offensive HC.

Only way to keep him is to elevate him.

That's right, we're going with Co-Head Coach titles for DA & KK.
I don't think it would hurt DA's feelings, he's all defense. He would probably be relieved to be able to concentrate on the defense. Of course, Kubiak couldn't have any authority over the defense or defensive draft.

Let's project a quick 3-year vision.

Year 1: 10 wins, wild card, close playoff loss on the road. No need to shake up the band, everybody comes back for 2025.
Year 2: 11 wins, division title, playoff win. Kubiak's name garners some attention but he doesn't love any of the situations he could be walking into.
Year 3: 10 wins, wild card, playoff win, playoff win, playoff loss. Now Kubiak's name is rumored everywhere there's a head coaching candidacy about to open. But also... Derek Carr's contract has ended, and Spencer Rattler's there waiting. He's shown flashes in mop-up duty but Carr's durability has seen him play 72 of the 74 games (including playoffs), missing the final game in 2025 when the division was already clinched and one in 2026 due to concussion protocol. The team is ready to see what they've got in Rattler; Carr will turn 36 this offseason.

Do you think Kubiak sticks around for the Rattler era, having developed him for three seasons? Or does he move on and potentially try to trade for Rattler?

Brian Johnson is still in Detroit so it's possible. Especially if we have something special cooking.

Honestly, there's more to being a head coach than being a good coordinator. Even if we finish with a top-10 offense, I don't think Kubiak is going to be at the top of anyone's list.
Ben Johnson did not get what he wanted in both $ and the right situation so he stayed. In actuality, he may have been asking for too much $ for a 1st time HC. But I'd bet $ that this is his last yr with the Lions

It's just my take on KK but I get the feeling that being a HC is not the insane burning desire with him, now if he has mad success then it's inevitable but I think maybe he wants mad success before the next step

That may be true. But, given that his dad was a long time NFL head coach, I suspect that his goal is to be a head coach in the NFL. But, his dad was also a long time offensive coordinator so he probably understands the value of being in a good situation and will be very careful which jobs he takes to make sure he doesn't take a job that tanks his career. He can talk to DA about that. Taking that Raiders job nearly killed his career. Even now it makes him look like a worse coach than he is. (I personally think that DA is a mediocre HC, but if you add in his Raiders record, he looks like one of the all time worst.)

A guy would have to be desperate to take the Carolina job with Tepper as the owner. I suspect Kubiak's dad would tell him not to take a HC job in a situation that bad.
If the Panthers fire a coach that they just gave a six year contract, no up and comer will take that job.

Is there any way that we could see more games, maybe against Dallas before we even start this? After next week, it could be “ when can we dump Kubiak”. Patience please.

Besides the Panthers defense being terrible, it certainly helped that our average starting field position was our own 46 for the nine consecutive scoring drives. Just a few yards away from starting every drive in their territory on average.

I’m definitely more optimistic than I was before Sunday, but I think you’re right that we need to see more before worrying about losing Kubiak.

I don't know sheetake mushrooms and I don't have any sauces... but I think Klint might be the guy who just wants to coach an offense, likes the local fishing, wants to give his family a little bit of stability, and just sticks around in a gravy spot. He's got a HC who will provide him an elite defense year in year out, the organization is by all accounts great to work for... And he does half the work the HC has to do. He can just focus on being a great OC in a good spot and enjoy life. You know the Saints will pay him what he's worth.

Just because you can achieve career progression, sometimes you're better off finding where you're happy and staying put. I'm possibly projecting a little, but I've held high positions and I've been happiest in the upper middle their where I can just "cook" as the kids say these days.

There was a path for DA to become head coach after serving as Payton's longterm defensive coordinator. Why not Kubiak?

If DA decides to leave on his own like Payton did, sure. But Loomis isn't firing DA if we're doing well. And if the offense does well enough for Kubiak to get a HC job, we're going to be a good team and DA isn't going anywhere.
