This guy is an idiot...

4. I think I'm not sure Olindo Mare will be worth a sixth-round pick, which New Orleans paid for him the other day; but at the end of the day, how big a price is the 199th pick in the draft, really? Oops. Pretty big. The 199th pick is the one New England used on Tom Brady seven years ago. But I would say this: Mare should be an effective and accurate kicker in the dome -- and the Saints will play 10 dome games next season. They'll play only two outdoor games in northern climates, Seattle and Chicago. I'd be surprised if Mare, who struggled last year with Miami, isn't at least an 80-percent field-goal kicker next year.

Yep, we get an 80% FG kicker in exchange for the pick somebody was drafted with 7 years ago in the 6th round. The Colts drafted OT Charlie Johnson there last year, obviously another first-ballot hall of famer. We screwed up big time.

/sarcasm

I usually like King, but he was reaching a bit there.

The fact that because Tom Brady was once a 6th round pick, the pick has so much value that us trading it for a kicker who perfectly fits what we want to do is out of wack. He's overvaluing the pick, for shock value, so say that the Saints paid too much, but then saying that it makes sense and that Mare will have a great year. In other words, I don't have much to write about so I'll come with this BS. Should we not ever trade a late 7th rounder because Colston worked out?

Jeez, talk about sensitive.

I agree that it's too easy to brush off a 6th round pick--if you think of guys like Brady and Colston. But part of last season we also kept 3 kickers on our roster because Carney couldn't kick off. Even then we were never a threat to make long field goals, and our kick offs were terrible no matter who was playing.

That was a huge mess last year that went unnoticed because we had the best offense in the NFL.

yeah that was a reach. You have to look at it this way: We could not draft a kicker better than mare in the 6th round. Kicker was one of our needs this offseason, or atleast another kicker for kick offs and long field goals. So for our 6th pick we got a kicker that can do it all. Which will free up an extra roster spot because we dont need 2 kickers now (one specialist and one hall of famer). Its a complete win win

This is the only part that makes me say "huh...what?" It's almost like he was playing with both openings and forget to delete one.

Well last year the Saints had their best draft in over a decade. Their two picks in the sixth round were (drumroll please)....Mike Hass and Josh Lay. Neither of whom made the team. Marques Colston in the seventh was incredible lucky pick. If they had any idea he was going to be that good they'd taken him much, much higher. Finally if the Saints had picked a kicker with a sixth no one would've batted an eye. A sixth was a tiny bit high but not crazy.....

Calling a guy an idiot makes us sensitive overreactors? I never knew idiot was such a powerful word. I now see why people still badger Vanderjagt!

It's possible. He does tear some of these columns off every week.

And my first reaction to the trade was almost exactly the same as his--we traded for a kicker who is solid, but he's no 25 year-old Morten Anderson. King really argues both sides of the issue, and both of his points are fare.

Can you think of a national sports writer who's been a bigger fan of the Saints in the past year?

And let me guess: Peter King went on to talk about how he changed some guys life by visiting him in a hospital, and how it changed his life also and put everything in perspective. King is a self-righteous blow-hard that tries way too hard to come accross as a softie that cares so much for others. If he cared so much for others, maybe he would have a little tolerance for some of the players with substance abuse and other problems in the NFL instead of ripping them and saying how horrible people they are b/c they aren't perfect like him. Go drink another triple mocha whatever-the-$#%$ latte your pushing in your column today.

That being said, his comment about Mare didn't really offend me. I had just been holding those feelings on King in for so long.
