Speculation Lattimore - Possible Trade Partners Now That June 2nd Has Passed (2 Viewers)

The team could buy some groceries with $12 Million bucks
I guess I don't really understand what could be done. Are we talking rework of contracts or bringing in talent or both?
Lattimore has only played in 17 of the 34 games the past two years
Hadn't realized he was out that much. If he's not missed on the field, not really a good thing for him.

The only trade I'd consider is Latt and some compensation for Deebo Samuel. That would be worth it in my mind. But I don't think SF needs a CB that bad and Pittsburgh appears to be more interested than us.

SF would love to get out of that Deebo contract and give the money to Aiyuk. Deebo is way overpaid. He had that 1,400 yard year, got paid, and hasn't cracked 900 since. 52mil over the next two years? No thanks.

Catch 22. On one hand I want to keep Latt because he's the best Corner we've ever had. We spent so many years searching for that lockdown #1 Corner and we finally found him. It's been amazing to watch a Saints Corner totally erase big time WRs.

But on the other hand, I think this bloated cap (without much talent or success to show for it) kick the can madness needs to stop. Can have my cake and eat it too. Some tough decisions will have to be made if they ever want to snap out of it.

Yes, but it doesn't have to be made this year. It's a year premature.
1. The trade value from this year to next isn't likely to change much unless he plays all 17 games on beastmode or something happens during the season that ends his season (don't you dare say the "i" word aloud).
2. The salary cap savings this year are worth less than what he's worth as a player even for only 10 games. He's more valuable as a Saint to the Saints for the 2024 season.
3. We get to drink the Kool-Aid first. We hope Kool-Aid McKinstry is the best CB in the draft, but that doesn't mean he will be. The Saints should take a year to figure out what they have in him before trading away the best CB in Saints history. ...And, this a big one, but it's convoluted so hear me out...

4. The Saints want to see out the last remaining changes needed to be made from the old regime. The Saints have more draft capital invested in their retooled Offensive line than most teams. That's 3 first rounders and a second rounder all drafted in the past 5 years. A retooled line and a fresh new offensive strategy with bonafied weapons in Kamara, Taysom Hill, Olave and Shaheed. The Saints see this year as a real chance to win the division and make a run. Enough has changed on the offensive side of the ball that they don't really know how good or bad the offense will be. So they're approaching the season as if they can right the ship on offense while fielding the usually solid defense. While fans may be ready to throw in the towel on this year, the Saints see it as a year to be maximally prepared to make a run. With incremental changes happening every year since the last coach's departure, these offensive changes and the contract decisions for Lattimore, Demario Davis and Cameron Jordan signal the last call for this version of the Saints. They're going to give it one last shot with a new engine because in 2025 a new chapter is coming anyway. Jordan and Davis are most likely gone. It makes sense to depart with Lattimore then too.

Trading him next year nets basically the same compensation and cap savings (relatively speaking since he's hopefully playing games). Plus, we get to see out the transition to the younger guys.

Really great post. Hard to argue with any of your points. If they're going run it back then they might as well run it back with their best defender. The one caveat would be the market for Latt. Right now there appears to be one. That can quickly change. We hear so much about how the Patriots always wanted to part ways with a player a year too early instead of a year too late. Hold on too long and things can go sideways. So we can keep him for all of the reasons you list but there's a risk that we could be stuck with another unmovable contract.

I say keep him. We've come this far so what's one more year? The cap can go kick rocks.

Can't end this thread while the window is still open for a possible trade between now and November 5th, 2024, which is the trade deadline for this upcoming season.

And that's just for discussing the possibility of him being traded this year alone.

You're really passionate about this subject.

Jordan & Davis are under contract through 2025 with their extensions... now agree it will be the last extensions for both of them, but I do not see them movable before the end of the 2025 season.

At that point I expect them to sign to a vet minimum deal & retire post June 1st of the 2026 off-season to spread the cap hit on their dead money hits.

But I fully expect both to play out their contracts through the end of the 2025 post season (& end with their 2nd SB in 2 years đź‘Ť I can dream!).

News Express - The Saints Report - has a YouTube Video up today with rumors that the Vikings have an interest in trading for Lattimore. It's merely speculation at this point, but they do cite Dustin Panadero of Bleacher Report as a source of the rumor with the Saints receiving a 2025 5th Round Pick and a 2026 3rd Round Pick in a trade.

While the heated buzz of Lattimore getting traded cooled off once he showed up for Saints Mini Camp, the embers are still smoldering, as the window is still open in 2024 until the trade deadline, which is November 5th, 2024. As I've stated in previous posts in this thread, if the Saints trade Lattimore this year I would prefer it to be prior to the start of the season and be a player for player of equal value with the Saints acquiring a player in a position of need and preferably a younger player.

From the same outlet - News Express - The Saints Report - they have another recent YouTube Video up suggesting that the Saints are a possible landing spot for free agent Patrick Peterson with the possibility of moving him to safety. This video leans heavily on speculation without citing any source of rumors. It is an interesting scenario should Peterson come to the Saints and play a hybrid role in the defense mostly as a safety. Could he transition there full time and be effective?

We're in the dog days of summer with just over 2 weeks remaining before Saints training camp opens. There's not much going on with player movement right now. In the meantime, sports outlets try to find a nugget here and there and in some case manufacture news with mere speculation which serves as clickbait for their platform to those starving for information. It will start to heat back up before training camp, with some of the remaining free agents on the market signing beforehand. However, some of the veterans may not sign until just prior to the season opening day and due to guaranteed salaries, some won't sign with a team until after week 1 of the season.

This report?

It’s not a rumor. It’s a made-up trade idea
