Let's Make a Run at Mike McCarthy (2 Viewers)

He turned us down in 2006. Remeber, he was the top choice and took the GB job and then we were "left with Payton". Honestly, I can't say that I blame him for taking the GB job, but it is nice to beat him.

He'll be fired in Dallas this year, and unfairly so because he's just a scapegoat for Jerry's hubris. Dude has been consistently coaching 12-5 seasons. He's over .600 as a head coach. He has a long NOLA history.

Now he may not want to come to this cluster-, without a star quarterback and an unfirable GM, but it makes sense to make a run at him, no?
No thanks

That's not accurate. He had a bad first season, but after that was pretty good. The whole whistleblower thing rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, but that doesn't mean he was wrong.

I'd be okay with Flores too.
This. His 3 seasons went like this:

5-11
10-6
9-8

In that 9-8 year the owner told him to tank and he didn’t. He also told the owner he didn’t want to draft Tua, but the owner did it anyway.

No more retreads. Unless Shanahan or McVay comes available. Other than that we need to be trying to find the next Shanahan/McVay. We just interviewed a bunch of people who learned under them in the offseason so we have a head start. Look at the ones who are having success as OCs elsewhwere…maybe even in our division….and bring them in to interview for HC.

We had it all. Now we got nothing.

Top 5 coach
Top 5 qb

And poof
Now we have bottom 5 qbs and the worst nfl hc

Most realistic options with the keeping of Klint Kubiak at OC.

Brian Flores
Aaron Glenn
Mike Vrabel
Robert Saleh (D coord option?)
Bill Belichek

Wild Card:
Joe Brady

You’re probably right with Aaron Glenn. It’s been said they really like him. I would like an offensive minded head coach and total separation from Sean Payton. It’s time to move on to a new era.

I don’t think any of them stick with Kubiak. They’re going to hire their own people…and they should.

Our reality is such that McCarthy would be the ideal next hire. We are 3 years away from a rebuild, assuming that Loomis would allow us to do proper rebuild. We will not be an attractive job opening at the end of this year due to our cap space and need to rebuild.

Any youg coach that comes here will likely realize that his first head coaching job could very well end in a 3 year firing. Top candidates might not take that chance for fear of jeopardizing their big shot. If we are truly 3 years away to a proper rebuild and salary cap clean up, this might mean that we are one "re-tread" type coach away, and McCarthy might be the best of those re-treads. In the least, he can get a young franchise QB ready for our rebuild.

Just my take on how I think about this. I would love a new, young top tier head coach, but I think we are at least 2 more NFL seasons from attracting the top of list of bright young prospects. All this said, I fully expect Loomis to bring back DA for one more year or be lazy and just hire Aaron Glenn next year, since ML is familiar with AG.

Ben Johnson...

Sounds like Matt Mascona’s take. You know Loomis doesn’t like to fire people. If he hires McCarthy we’ll be stuck with him for a decade.

If Ben Johnson doesn’t want to come here, that’s fine. The hot name in three years isn’t going to want to come here either. Find another good young OC that isn’t the hot name right now. There are only 32 of these jobs. We don’t have to settle. Outside of Ben Johnson nobody else is getting an offer every year.
