Loomis: Next Saints Head Coach will decide their own staff and direction at Quarterback (2 Viewers)

WE have to eat Carrs contract this year. It will cost over 25 million dollars in cap. Which means we would have to extend Cam, Demario, and Tyrann. We will save 40 million next year cutting carr. Carr messed up not taking a pay cut. We cut him. He gets 25 million. He wont get the 40 million. He will be left to sign a 3-5 million dollar contract. Fields, Russell Wilson, Zach Wilson, Jimmy G. Andy Dalton, and Flacco will all be free agents. There are not that many teams who need Qbs. Why sign Carr for 20 million when you can get Fields, or Flacco for 3 million. Then you will have drafted QB's. Then you also will have cut candidates. Maybe the Aiden o Connels, Mischnew, Trubiskys, and Mariottas. Someone may try to work some magic with Daniel Jones, and Desmond Ridder. Carr is bitter. Nobody is paying him that money off this injury riddled season.

I thought it was interesting that he not only said he had the arm talent but that he also said he had the processing. Frankly, if you think a QB has both of those, the only thing left to do is to get him experience on the field.
Yep!

There are ways to cut him but it would difficult. It would either mean getting guys to take pay cuts or basically converting every based salary on the roster to signing bonuses. Maybe both. And I guess they could always use the adding void years to contracts of other players, but I really hope they don't do that.
Based on what I see at Over The Cap, we're currently over the cap by $52.3M. Post June 1 cut for Carr saves $30M this year. We would have to restructure Cam, Demario, Ruiz, McCoy, and Granderson. In '26, we currently have $60M in positive cap space, which would be eaten up by the Carr cut and restructures, but we'd be in the best shape we've been in, in years. At least that's what it looks like to my untrained cap experience... could be looking at it wrong.

Probably didn't help that fans here absolutely were not welcoming to him.
Yeah. It's hard to be the guy that follows the guy. I know there was a year between. Set up for failure because we all want another Brees and they are hard to find.

This does not mean he not hiring the coach that says they want to work with Carr and Rattler though

We could trade Tyrann, and save some money, trade Taysom and save some money. I do think Cam would be willing to take a paycut. Demario is getting restructured, then Ruiz, and McCoy. They have to make a decision on Olave, He is good. He is not a number 1. CeeDee Lamb, Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson, Nico Collins, and A.J. Brown. They are number 1's. They will have to decide on a fifth year option. They will have to cut:
cedrick Wilson Jr.Wide receiver$3,400,000
Josh BallLeft tackle$960,000
Kyle HergelOffensive lineman$960,000
Isaiah StalbirdSafety$960,000
Anfernee OrjiLinebacker$960,000
Rejzohn WrightCornerback$960,000
Kevin Austin Jr.Wide receiver$960,000
Jordan MimsRunning back$960,000
oster MoreauTight end$4,884,000
Jamaal WilliamsRunning back$3,930,000

You can "easily" cut Carr this year despite the issues discussed. (Not suggesting you should, but that you could.)

The Saints are $52M+ over the cap right now.
  • Post 6/1 designation on cutting Carr saves $30M in cap space.
  • Ideally Cam retires and you can rework his deal the way we did with Ram, but let's say he doesn't. Post 6/1 designation on Cam saves $11M.
  • The next obvious move (to me) is Taysom. His future is unclear at his age (going on 36) and health, but he also has no guaranteed money left. Give him some protection (incentive) with some guarantees in the future through next season and bring him down to about the vet minimum this year. You can save about $7M.
  • Cut C. Wilson. $2.4M savings.
Those 4 moves alone get you to cap compliance. But this in my opinion does as little damage as possible to the future cap. (Make no mistake, there's some damage that gets built in, but at least the extension is minimum to a guy like Taysom who, health-pending, has probably the most value of those guys if you don't value Carr.) [Edit for clarity: Note this is post-6/1 compliance for clarity. As I mentioned in a later post, you'll still have to find some savings with extensions to players. The team will have to make decisions on a guy like Olave or Shaheed or Juwan Johnson for example. They need to hit on whatever extensions they make.]

You'll need to clear room for some draft picks, etc. But there's still plenty of options depending on your preferences. (Not advocating, just giving options.)
  • Cut Jamaal Williams. $1.6M savings.
  • Cut K. Saunders. $2.6M savings.
  • Cut F. Moreau. $2.8M savings.
  • Cut N. Shepherd. $1.2M savings.
  • Cut J.T. Gray. $2.1M savings.
  • Cut D. Jackson. $1.1M savings.
  • Cut J. Ridgeway. $1.1M savings.
  • Cut J. Haener. $0.9M savings.
Total of those would be about $13.5M. Obviously there are other guys to cut, but at some point you're just replacing those salaries with the same minimum salaries.

You can start to see older contracts come off the books then in the following years with no future penalty, assuming you want them to. Cam, Carr, Mathieu, D. Davis. It means going young and lean for 1-2 years, but it can be done if you want. I'd even argue the easiest path to compliance has to be to cut Carr with the 6/1 designation. Otherwise you're extending him.

While you can cut some of those guys, be careful in assuming there will be savings. Because those $960,000's you see will just be replaced with other UDFA or street FA that cost the same minimum. So there won't be any real savings when you get to the Top 51 salaries most likely.

The dead money hits either way. Maybe there is a chance that he would reduce his salary to facilitate a move to a team he wants to go to that will make up the money difference in a new contract. But, given how he made sure to fork the Raiders on the way out of the door, that doesn't seem likely.

Yep, in fact a trade before June 1 results in far less cap savings than a post 6/1 cut.

The ideal path cap-wise is a post 6/1 trade, but that's not happening for so many reasons typically (having to carry the actual cap space, finding a team willing to wait for their QB until June, etc).

Yeah but you would have to carry Carr's full cap hit until June 1 in order to do that and i think doing that is the difficult part. But, it apparently can be done if the new HC wants it to happen. But, Cam isn't retiring so you either have to rework his deal, get him to take a pay cut, or cut him.

You have to be under the cap before June 1st. You also have to sign your rookies. You have to restructure every possible contract, have 0 cap space for the offseason and you still might need extra space from somewhere.

It's not realistic. Just forget it as an option.

As was stated you have to get this done before June 1st. All these post June 1st cuts are only options after you have become cap compliant.

You're allowed two post June 1 designations that count immediately. Carr and Ramczyk would be the two.
