Malcolm Butler should still be on Saints' radar (IMO) (1 Viewer)

I say send the Patriots next year's first

What if something happens, and we really, really need a 1st round pick next year? Oops!

If Butler didn't work out, which is frequently the case with DB's coming into a new system, and we miss a great player in the first round, the team and fans would regret it forever.

What if we had given up our 1st round pick last year? We would have watched someone else take Lattimore, and cried in our gumbo.

I say go for it. Our window is closing.

New England's window is closing also and they decided to go for it. We have tons of evidence to understand this:

- They normally try to acquire extra picks, they went the opposite this time. They invested 3 picks of this draft to get a wide receiver and a running back with NFL experience. They don't have time to develop players right now. They also trade out of the second round in order to get Koney Ealy.

- If the reports are correct, they could have gotten a ransom of picks for Jimmy Garoppolo, but they decided to keep him for another year, knowing quiet well that next year they will have to franchise him if they want to keep him.

- They normally don't spend big money on free agents, they did it this year with Stephone Gilmore.

- And there is Butler. He may need to be franchised next year or will leave as an unrestricted free agent. They didn't think what they could get in the draft with the compensation the saints offer will have the same impact as Butler playing opposite Gilmore, so they kept him. We should not forget this was a draft specially rich at cornerback. Experience was a must for them.

So, frankly, after all of this I don't see a reason why the Patriots will be interested in trading Butler to the saints or anyone else before the season starts.

They are living in the present, and no doubt they are the favorites to win the Superbowl again.

Right now, the only way I see Butler in a saints uniform is on 2018, signed as a free agent, and with a heavy contract.

I wish that we won't need to look for another cornerback next year.

I think their plan is to go all in on the next two seasons and try to win another 1 maybe two. Then I think they make a decision on the Brady-Garoppolo situation. I also think that was the idea with the Cooks move. After this two year window they'll know what they have in him and either move on or keep him as a weapon fro Garappolo.

I also don't see us signing Bulter in the off-season. He will be a year more into his prime and the 5 year deal we agreed on this off-season made since as he would only be 32 at the end of the contract.

Now he'd be 32 in the last two years of his contract and probably end up costing us a lot of dead money.

The pats really screwed this guy out of a lot of money. He single-handedly wins you a super bowl and you not only don't pay him, but bring his replacement in house and hand him a stack of money and also deny Butler the opportunity to make his big pay-day elsewhere.

I'd be beside myself if I were him.

In my opinion, this team is much closer that most think. Like almost any potential contender though, you can't just rely on luck; every once in a while, you need to make a move that you feel can put your team over the top.

Not that I don't agree with you. I think we have a lot of talent on our team and with the new coaching staff I truly hope that the potential of these guys will flourish.

What I don't understand is how some people look at the record and say "we're almost there". Listen.. We've had FOUR 7-9 season over the last five years. That's to wins away from winning seasons. I get it. But the record hide the fact that we've been eliminated weeks earlier. In my book winning a couple of pointless games after you've been eliminated doesn't make you close to the play-offs. I know that this isn't what the OP is saying, I just had to get it out of my system. I hate that coaches, media etc. is using the 7-9 record to let those seasons go down as "almost there seasons". Last year (and 2014+2012) we were 5-8 with three games left. The year before we were 5-9 with two games left. To me this says that we were pretty far away from the play-offs.

What I'm trying to say is that we need to get better in every aspect of the game. We can not let the record tells us that we're close, when in reality we were eliminated three games before season ended. Had we been 7-8 and lost the last game, we had been close. But this wasn't the case.

SO.. Here's to hoping we get a good start in spite of a pretty harsh start of the season. Let's start out with 4-0 before going in to the bye week ;)

Depends on what they think their needs will be next off-season. They addressed corner and if we take the rest of the cap into next year, we will have some coin to spend on an area of need.

We have to re-sign Brees. You've got guys like Kam Chancellor, Trumaine Johnson and even Jimmy Graham on the market in 2018. :hihi:

And Malcolm Butler.....without having to give up anything for him.

He was offered a contract after the SB. It's more on his agent than anything the Pats did as a whole.

I think we just sign him next year if we even need him. I think its best we keep our draft picks

It was a good idea, they supposedly offered 6 mill I believe which is pennies compared to Gillmore's 13 a year.

Tendering him was a smart move by the Pats, but a shrewd one. All of his peers got mega bucks and he will play for 3 mill.

I like Butler and I would love to be loaded at corner, but not for a 1st AND a huge new contract. There are very few players I can think of that would be worth that to our team. Watt, Mack, Miller... I can't think of anyone else.

Next year, he's an unrestricted free agent and, if the reports out of Boston after the draft were accurate, he wants out anyway and we can have him for nothing if he truly wants to be here.

He will not be gotten for "nothing". Good FA CB's will get 12-15 mill per year and we will be competing with other teams for his services.

You can't build a team based on acquiring and paying one more starter than you need 'just in case of injury'. The salary cap and market forces don't make this feasible.

The mantra of the NFL is 'next man up' for a reason. You have to develop depth at the right price, not buy more starters who are ultimately overpriced backups.

This is also my reply to all those threads saying we don't have enough WR 'because of possible injuries'.

I agree. However, I do think we are thin at WR. I don't feel good about our depth at the position. I'm not saying we go out and get a high-priced player either but it would be nice to know that we have prospects in the mix who can contribute significantly should the need arise.

'Single handedly' is a bit much. Do I want Butler to stay a Pat? Absolutely. But no front office in their right mind shells out cash based on loyalty or emotion, even as much as fans like me would want them to. He was offered a contract, refused it, and now has terminated his previous agent. I'm not big on the amount of money we gave Gilmore but if you've offered a corner what you think his market value is and he has refused it, you have to make sure you have back up plans.

You wouldn't do it in case of injury. A third corner in today's game is essentially a starter.

Sorry for suggesting that we load up on a position that's always been a problem for us this entire millennium outside of 2 or 3 seasons. It can argued that solidity at this single position has been the difference between our good teams and mediocre teams over the past decade. When we are strong and deep at corner, we win.
There's no need to apologize.
Just quit acting your idea is the only one that matters.
I respect your opinion and agree with you to a point.

I think, between Breaux and Lattimore as starters, and Moore, Crawley, Harris, Swann, and Williams for depth, we should be good. If the latter 2 can stay healthy, I say we'll be more than good.

Certainly no need to make any bold splashes at that position, not when we'd be much better off right now trading a #1 for, say, an edge rusher (rather than yet another [very good, mind you] CB).
