N/S Marcus Davenport - Vikings $13 Million Star Lacks Desire (1 Viewer)

I remember an interview with Dav, when he said that he was still trying to find a way to be aggressive. That comment took me off guard. Dude has played a gladiator sport for the longest time. His position is one that seeks out/hunts down a QB/RB/etc. He constantly is being blocked from said hunt. How is he that old and still trying to find a way to be more aggressive? I’m not saying that he should be a T-Sizzle, but geez man, at least show a little bit of passion when going toe to toe with the opposition.
That’s why I’ve always said “We need Dawgs on defense”. None of this passive type energy. If a player has a passive demeanor, then his talents better be undeniable, and obviously more visible than his peers. Which Dav’s was not. Plus, how do you share a field, locker room, and position group with Cam freaking Jordan and not learn more than 1 move? Make it make sense?!?! Yup, I would 100% agree with him lacking desire. Some of these big dudes are just “Big Tender”. Can’t win with those dudes
i agree. look at the 2009 super bowl defense, bobby mccray, charles grant, will smith, anthony hargrove, jonathan vilma, scott fujita, tracy porter, jabari greer, darren sharper.

DAWGS. no wonder they won the SB.

I don't think Davenport loves football....and I put that back on the talent evaluators with the Saints. These are the things they need to uncover with tons of interviews with old coaches, etc. You need guys in the building that love football and want to be there. Same thing with Pete Carmichael. He didn't want the job and we had to convince (plead?) with him to take it. Bad decision making.

The Davenport pick has always stuck in my craw, gave up way too much draft capital to take on a project player from a small school.

Or you stop thinking everyone is a victim and stop projecting your own insecurities on others. Everybody has mental health issues. You either find excuses or solutions. I will not waste an ounce of my empathy on a guy who has shown over and over he just doesn’t care and takes it all for granted. He’s not special, the world is full of excuses makers.

So go ahead and feel sorry for him for the both of us. Yes, he’s a human with human problems. Boo hoo. What he’s not, he’s not a football player.
Who said he's a victim? Be a good human, not a bad one.

Who are you, the Pope? You are treating him like he has some type of valid excuse for collecting gargantuan paychecks while possessing all-world talent so that he can "lack desire".

I didn't call him a victim, but I did infer you are treating him like one. You can be a good human without feeling sorry for every guy who wasted their opportunities.

He does. He's hurt. He's been hurt, come back, gotten hurt again, come back again, and again. Is it impossible for you to understand the mental toll that takes on a person? Are you so jealous of the money he's earning that you cannot see your way to treating him as a person?

I don't know the answer how some guys play their whole careers with hardly any injuries and some can't stay healthy. I know Turners this year was just someone fell on him. Kinda like with Lattimore, just wrong place wrong time. But throwing more money at these guys isn't going to motivate them. If it was me, if they haven't played much on that initial contract, let them walk.

Yeah...dudes been dissalointing on the field but there is definitely something upstairs that isn't quite right...probably has always been that way.

He seems like a nice dude, but handling the pressure of being a pro athlete isn't what he's built for right now.

He found himself in a funk and seems to have never gotten out of it.

I think it boils down to many factors - some people's bone and muscle structures not being made to play the sport, along with some people's mental/psychological makeup not being the same as others who have a stronger desire to play through injuries/soreness.

You also have the ones that feel as though this game won't care about them after they leave it, so they're not willing to risk their long term health in any capacity whatsoever for it.

Not every player is necessarily a crazed football fan either; many do it just because they have the ability and it pays great money. When the adversity hits, these are the ones that easily walk away, retire early, or stay at home not having the desire to exert the energy and play through injuries for it anymore.

I know as fans, we view it as a game, because that is all we are exposed to. However these guys live grueling lives, mentally and physically, to be able to put on their performances for us on Sundays, not to mention time away from family.

That's what the Saints did with Davenport.
