N/S Marcus Davenport - Vikings $13 Million Star Lacks Desire (1 Viewer)

Not sure I thought Trey would be a perennial pro-bowler (which he is) but I certainly knew he was better than Davenport. Davenport is a one trick pony with a good bull rush. Trey is a dynamic rusher, that can bend, and has multiple pass rush tools. This was pretty obvious to me early on in both careers. I don't agree the Saints couldn't afford him. They just chose not to prioritize him given the DE's on the roster and needs elsewhere (like you say, tagging Marcus Williams, who we promptly lost). I'm just not going to let the Saints off the hook on this one.

Who was the one worth trading up for?

Hendrickson was drafted the year before, and we let walk in 2020 along with 8 other starters because we were $100m over the cap.

There was never a binary choice between the two guys. The only time the team had a make a decision on Hendrickson was whether to use the franchise tag on him or Marcus Williams, who eventually left because we were still in cap hell the following year.
Bradley Chubb.

And yes, you had a guy in house that produced but you let him walk for an unknown, often injured Davenport. I hear you Loomis fans all the time on how he magically makes cap space. He could’ve made it had they not thought Davenport was the answer.

Not only was the media speculation when the Saints traded up that Jackson was the pick, but Jackson was still available at our original slot in the first round. But Brees was still on the roster, and our offense under Brees was not the offense that best suited Jackson.

Davenport, Turner and Foskey were bad moves. We gave up two ones for Davenport, Turner was a big reach, and every indication is that Foskey is a bust.

Loomis kicked the can for a few years but it all came to a head in 2020. Even with Brees retiring, half the starters had to be let go.

If SP could’ve created packages for TH7 (which he eventually did), then he dang sure could’ve created a system for Lamar

Consensus was that year that the only edge rushing draft choices worth drafting high were Chubb and Davenport. Unfortunately, the Saints desperately needed an edge rusher that year and reached for Davenport. I don't recall if he had injury concerns in college, but he couldn't have played against elite competition. Decisions like that one have soured me on trading up and on drafting players from smaller programs.

The thing about Dav that was so frustrating was that when he flashed he really FLASHED. Pulling down RBs with one arm. Putting the fear of God into a QB. But…that would only be for a game or two and then he’d disappear for multiple games and then go on IR.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a guy as legit strong as he is. He has so much talent and it’s a shame that he hasn’t been able to put it all together. For whatever reason. But yeah I get why scouts and teams get enamored with him enough to ignore the obvious red flags.

They didn't have the money. They had minus $100 million

I understand that. The point Underhill made was that they did not think he was worth the number that he would get on the open market or via franchise tag, and they were not going to pay him that even if they could (which they potentially could have by letting M Williams go), because they didn’t think he was worth it.

Again though this isn’t me saying this, it came from Underhill, if you want to hear exactly what he said I recommend checking out their postgame podcast from last week.

Looks like his 1-year prove-it-deal with the Vikings is not panning out. Obviously no surprise to any of us. Wonder what our compensation pick will end up being (not much).

Can't feel bad for the Vikings, their fans are air heads. Curious what type of "deal" Davenport gets in 2024? You figure that somebody will offer him a contract of some sort. NFL Vet Minimum or something with some real money. My guess is a couple of million from some crazy team.

OverTheCap still has us as getting three comp picks, all in the 5th round. One each for Onyemata, Davenport and Elliss.

The Comp Pick Formula is complicated, to say the least, but they do a pretty good job of laying out the players and the way it works. Davenport (because of salary) and Elliss (because of snaps and salary) are pretty solidly in the 5th round range right now. Onyemata is towards the top end of the 5th round range and he could get into 4th round territory, but it is unlikely.

Thanks I was wondering if the 5’th round comp was going to drop even further.

Yes no doubt he will again find another team that will gamble on his “potential”. At the end of the day though, nobody’s losing more on him than the Saints did. I suppose every teams got there faux pas they can torture themselves about.

With how many of our guys sign with Atlanta, at first I was thinking that might be his next stop, but Ryan Nielsen probably knows better. I think he will sign for more than the league minimum, but if he goes that low maybe Sean Payton might bite again. Who knows!

Consensus from most talking heads was that Hendrickson's contract was a HUGE risk considering his injury history and single year of production.
