I'm not going to pretend I know much about Williams, but if he can play ballhawking single high safety he will be a welcome addition. We have needed a ballhawk since Sharper left and having a guy that can play that spot allows Bell and Vaccaro to play closer to the line which is the best use of their talents.

And FWIW, at least one guy who I think knows the NFL really likes Williams:

Saints selected Utah S Marcus Williams with the No. 42 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

As they should, the Saints are going all in on fixing their defense. Williams (6’1/202) made 30 starts in three years at Utah before turning pro, amassing 11 interceptions and four forced fumbles while working primarily as a center-field, single-high free safety. PFF College also charted Williams with the highest run-stop percentage among all Division-1 safeties in 2016, and the No. 2 tackle efficiency rating. Williams proceeded to blow up the Combine with 93rd-percentile SPARQ results, including an outrageous 43 ½-inch vertical. He also aced the Wonderlic (34) and is young for a rookie, not turning 21 until September. We’re not sure why Williams didn’t generate more pre-draft buzz.

I really like the pick. That vertical is gonna help in this division.

I think there was better value at the secondary at the second and pass rusher at the he third.

The way our NFC South are building, we need as much help with people that can cover.

I would have gone with Sidney Jones just because I understand his role better.

I understand Williams' role also, but I am not clear what is next for Von Bell.

Von Bell is a traditional FS, where Byrd and now Williams are more of a center fielder ala Sharper. Bell will stay in a traditional FS/NB role.

Vonn Bell = SS
Vacarro will be the third safety close to the line.
Marcus Williams = FS
Bush is back for all.

People that are wondering where Bell and Vaccaro go now?

Where they should have been playing in the first place had we already possessed a guy with Williams range and ability...

Vacarro will be down in the box and running pass/run blitz work (even some LB)... Bell will be freed up to roam underneath and provide us with true "big nickle" guy in zone (where he excels).

This pick makes us better at 3 positions... not just one.

honest question. did we need a FS? I figured with have Vacarro Bell and Bush we werent in need to spend 2nd rounder on a S. Honestly i dont know though and do totally hate the pick

We needed a FS that can play deep. Neither Vacarro or Bell are particularly suited to play that spot. Bell can do it, but his talents are better used closer to the line. We are clearly going to play a lot of 3 safety sets using Bell and Vaccaro to cover TEs and RBs. It looks like it's the future of NFL defense because of the all the speed receiving RBs and TEs.

We are building an elite secondary that is for sure. We might be so good in the secondary you might see more pressures this year from the players we do have.

And with all this DB help it allows us to use Vaccaro to blitz and let Allen dial up more blitzes to get pressure.

Everybody said we needed to match up with OJ Howard, McCaffrey, Samuel... Well we have countered those moves perfectly.

Wow didn't know he was that young! Both of our secondary picks are only 20, with plenty of good years ahead of them.

Vonn Bell = SS

Vacarro will be the third safety close to the line.

Marcus Williams = FS

Bush is back for all.

Thanks guys. I guess now we are going to HAVE to play multiple safety sets, based on how the NFC South is going to play us.

Good Pick? Yeah! Great pick? Maybe!

I wanted Willis... but I can't sneeze at picking Marcus Williams.

The Saints must see a good edge rusher dropping into one of the 3rd round slots. That, or they really love Okeafor and/or Kikaha.

Or... Maybe there is a trade up coming.

Yep. It almost looks like the days of having 3 actual LBs on the field in the NFL are over. Modern TEs and receiving RBs are just to big and fast for most LBs to cover.
