Question Mickey Loomis’ GM duties (12 Viewers)

The football/personnel guy in charge is Jeff Ireland. Ireland wouldn’t be the contracts guy if he were the GM, though. There’d still need to be someone from finance, like an EVP/Finance, for that role, which is essentially shuffling deck chairs on the ship because personnel & finance always have to work in tandem with coaching/preparation to acquire talent. Loomis was a finance guy in graduate school and a finance guy with the Seahawks. He never worked at the collegiate level which is why he relies on the staff of collegiate scouts to handle that business, whereas it’s pretty much just him and Khai Harley dealing with the money/negotiation of it.

Didn't they have a Fire Ireland billboard in Miami? Speaks volumes. Every draft of his since 2017 has been underwhelming. Our team shot up after that draft but has been on a skid every since. So if he is our football guy we are pretty much done for .

As assistant GM, Ireland doesn't really have the power to actually draft or sign players, just make recommendations. By most accounts in the media and on this board, Loomis has largely given the HC control over who has been selected, especially in the first couple of rounds. From what I understand scouts and personnel people have been given more influence over the later picks.

Some of our 3rd round and later picks have been AK, Anzalone, Hendrickson, CJGJ, Kaden Ellis, Zack Baun, Paulson Adebo, Jordan Howden, Kendre Miller and Spencer Rattler. Where we've really suffered is in picks like Davenport, Payton Turner, Trevor Penning and Isaiah Foskey, some of which we traded up to get. There are so many late picks contributing over that same time for various teams that we've let leave than early rounders that have contributed. If anything I think it shows that maybe shouldn't defer to coaches as much as we do.

Has this ever been reported? Everything I can find online says it's a mutual decision between HC and Loomis and Ireland provides additional insight.

Perhaps it hasn't been. In many Loomis defense posts the narrative has continually been that Loomis isn't a personnel guy and that he leaves it to the HC. Maybe I've just read that it was reported on here without vetting it, which would be my error. Thanks for calling that out.

GMs like Polian and Rosman don't let the coach obscure the big picture. No player or coach is more important than the team's long-term future. Sometimes you have to say this player is getting too old or tell a coach we need to draft a new QB. Mick has failed to do these things.
LOL I'll bet you don't know that Loomis has a better winning % as GM than Roseman does. Roseman = 74.8% Loomis 78.8%

Actually, I was a fan for EVERY Saints interim coach, was a Season Ticket Holder when Bum Phillips was fired and Wade became our interim coach. You apparently weren't even a dream at that point.....
LOL You must be a youngun with early altimeters because Bum was NOT fired from the Saints he stepped down. I became a Saints fan in 67 when Gilliam ran back the opening KO for a TD. Maybe you should look at my sig pic before you try and guess my age LOL SMH

Just to set the record straight, Mrs Benson fired DA mid season not Loomis! Loomis wanted to wait until the end of the season!
Let's really set the record straight, in ML's own words " Letting DA go was a consensus of the group and I was part of that group" But yes ML like Tom Benson did not believe in firing a HC mid-season. It does little good. In hindsight ML was right. Firing DA mid season and not waiting till the season was over accomplished little. The D got worse, we won maybe a couple games we would have lost and making our draft picks lower. Make no mistake DA needed to go but a mid-season firing accomplished nothing good

How many rings an super bowl apperances and rings does Loomis have versus Rosman, smart guy? Philly has 3 appearances and 2 rings. Try again. :ROFLMAO:
You guys keep making excuses for Mick

It's been reported many times that ML says when it comes to the draft , It's a consensus between the HC and the scouting dept. And when they can't agree the decision come down to him. And you can bet $$$ that more times than not ML will side with the HC

And the Godell didn't rob the Eagles out of a SB appearance did he ?

I agree with this, but it's just not the way it is here. The buck has to stop with someone. It can't just go round and round in circles. In my opinion it puts more culpability on Loomis when things don't go well and others give him a pass because he just crunched the numbers and the coach made the decisions.

That said, I like what Loomis is doing this off season so far. I think if he's empowering Moore and also taking some responsibility for what the roster is today, then we may be able to finally correct it. They don't need to announce it, just show us that it's being done. I think Moore is a much smarter and strategic leader than DA was. We may finally be turning the corner.
Time will tell. I'm just not giving Mick a pass just because we hired someone who may or may not succeed.
The Saints do not live by a different set of rules than other teams if you're not successful, first you blame the coach and then you blame the GM.

Fans rallied their money and bought a billboard. Who gives a hoot. How have things in Miami worked out since then? They were playing the same .500 ball they’re playing today. People just want scapegoats and never have a better plan.
Philbin was 24-28
Gase was 23-25
Flores was 24-25
McDaniel is 28-23

Two things nobody seems to understand: One, Loomis is not a real GM. Latest case in point, "I would not have fired Dennis Allen." Not his job. He's the accountant. And not the Ben Afflek kind either. He just never has been that guy who makes those calls although he badly wants to be.

Loomis is just the bean counter who runs the Saints' salaries on a Ponzi scheme. He spends future cap on today's players. He is counting on the cap going up and big-money players to renegotiate to take payouts now and push their salary cap number into the future.

Covid bit him in the butt and I'm surprised he survived it. Depth sure didn't. But now he seems to be back to business as usual.
