Mississippi has no vehicle inspection and its starting to show. (1 Viewer)

My anti braketag origin story....way back in 2003-04ish I went in to get a new Brake Tag at a spot in New Orleans....I was given a reject slip becuase 1 of the 2 lights that illuminate the REFLECTIVE license plate was burned out. Dude offered to replace the burnt out light on the spot for $40 while attempting to charge me an additional 20 for the brake tag. Left on the spot and never attempted on my own to get a tag ever again. Since then, if the dealer didn't put one on for me during the purchase...I never handled it on my own.

I loved when they were doing road work between NO East and Slidell which resulted in rocks getting thrown all over teh interstate cracking everyone's windsheild...then you go in for a Brake tag and they tell you that your windsheild is cracked and you can't get a BT.

Like WTH?

Knowking Louisiana, DOTD and Safelite have a handshake deal in place where they LA/DOTD/Contractors scour the roads before doing the roadwork but never bring in a sweeper to clear the debris...any damages caused brings in more business for the repair companies.

Also fun fact that'll piss you off about the state trooper inpsection sticker checkpoints. Brake tag revenue goes to the State Troopers
part of it also goes to omv.. oh wait, omv is under state police. never mind.

well, being in the Baton Rouge Metro area, we have to get the inspection with the OBD2 to get emissions test. so basically if the check engine light is on, no dice..
but everyone knows someone who can get them one.. it's a dumb premise. the only reason they are still doing it is to help out the shops who sell them make money .

In Louisiana having a brake tag only means that you found a brake tag station and gave them $20

...and those Brake tag checkpoints setup by the State Troopers should be illegal
I can assure you, as someone who drove in Mississippi when we did have inspection stickers, this was the case here, too.

I love having to pay to prove my car is suitable to drive on the roads that are unsuitable for my car. It's a complete joke. Only a portion of the population bothers with it anyway. There's a bunch of uninsured beaters on the road at present.
Roads in Maryland that are maintained by the state are very good. When it's up to broke-arse local municipalities like this city, the roads are atrocious.

The state got rid of vehicle inspections a few years ago. I started noticing more vehicles with no exhaust, then Mustangs with full on race pipes basically running hot laps on the street in front of my house. Now, I am seeing a lot of cars with no headlights. Not burned out bulbs, physically removed headlight housing.
Sometimes I se a car with no fenders, hood, lights, or exhaust.
It is barely running when it comes by. It won’t even idle.
Did it really ever matter, everyone knew someone who would take your $5 and slap the sticker on the windshield?

I think some people call an inspection sticker a brake tag and others call your registration sticker on you plate a brake tag. Depends on where you grew up.
the only place i've seen that calls them Brake tags are people in the New Orleans Area, Most others in the state call them inspection stickers. Registration sticker is the one you put on your license plate.

In Texas, your plate registration is linked to your annual vehicle inspection.
Pass inspection, take the paper the county assessor or the local H-E-B and get (pay for) your reg renewal.
It all varies by state/municipality.

Thirteen states have no vehicle inspection: Alaska, Arkansas, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Florida, Washington, and Wyoming.

I don't mind the state inspections here in Virginia. I just hate the separate property (auto) tax. We already pay a sales tax, but an annual tax on top of that is ugh.

My brake tag is from 2019. I usually get a new one once every 6 or 7 years..
Can't do that in Virginia. They will definitely pull you over for expired registration. And you can't renew registration without a valid safety/emissions inspection.

Pretty common - we have it here too. Quick research shows that 27 states have annual vehicle tax (often a form of personal property tax) but Virginia's is indeed the highest.

ive never heard of a brake tag is that a state wide thing?

You likely call it an Inspection Sticker. My wife who is from Alexandria had no idea what I was talking about when I referred to a Brake Tag, but Brake Tag is what people in the New Orleans area call them.

We get that here in Maryland. You pay sales tax when you buy a new vehicle and that sales tax is paid again by the buyer every time the vehicle is sold. At least it’s not annual.
