MLB's - Curtis Lofton - field mouse (1 Viewer)

I know absolutely nothing about this guy but the highlight shows he is definitely a playmaker. Man, I'm tired of getting my hopes up for these LB'ers and never getting them.

Guys from what i've seen the guy can play at this level and be a impact player. But he may be a reach in the top 20 for a MLBer. He just doesn't have the sand to stand up at MLBer unless he's free to roam with a couple of 330# DT's in front keeping him clean.
He'd be great in the right system. Maybe a SS if he dropped to 225 and ran a 4.5 flat. There he could dominate.

Doesn't have the SAND? What does that mean? What are you basing his lack of SAND on? His size? He's bigger than Lofa Tatupu. He's an inch shorter and the same weight as Patrick Willis and Will Witherspoon. An inch shorter than Ray Lewis and only 2 inches shorter than Demeco Ryans and a few pounds heavier. You don't need to be 6'4 to play MLB. Sam Mills, anyone? Mike Singletary? Take the compact guy; they get low and hit like a wrecking ball. I've only seen a few OU games this season and that highlight reel, but he's definitely thrown himself into the mix.

Honestly, I'm tired of lackluster LB play and lack of leadership on our D and I hate not being able to anchor my fantasy team with a Saints IDP :hihi:. If Phillips and Ellis are gone and this guy tests well at his workouts and shows a high football IQ, I have no problem "reaching" for him at #10. Our defence is absolute garbage; let's fix it. In hindsight, would Lofa Tatupu, Demeco Ryans or David Harris not be worthy of top-10 picks? How about Ray Lewis, who was considered "undersized" at Miami?

Great point. 6-0, 240 lbs isn't small at all.

6-0, 215 is small for a MLB.
6-0, 240 is a human wrecking ball.

If this kid is a player I'm all for it, even at 10.

damn im glad this guy declared

i watched him alot this year in college and he played great. id pick him first round all day. in my eye he is a bonafide playmaker, something we sorely lack.

id love having him in the middle of that D.

I just found a mock that has the Saints taking Kenny Phillips at #10 and Curtis Lofton with their 2nd round pick:

http://walterfootball.com/draft2008_2.php

That would be a great draft right there, but I doubt Lofton goes in the 2nd.....cool though to see the Saints getting him!

Ellis is taken at 12 in that mock draft, I Hope that we have those kinds of choices at pick 10, and this guy looks really good in that hilight video.

I think we could trade back if a prospect falls and then get lofton in the 1st. Rookie Lbs have a history of making an immediate impact

Kenny Phillips in the first, Curtis Lofton in the second, and DeJuan Tribble in the third.

All would start for us. That is the best mock draft I have seen so far.

Whats his 40 time? He looked like he's about a 4.55 from that int return.

He's got game speed and has quick change-of-direction speed. His 40-time is rumoured to be in the 4.65-4.75 range. If he can run in the low end of that, he'll be fine. Demeco Ryans ran a 4.65, Lofa Tatupu ran a 4.83, Paul Posluszny ran a 4.70, Nick Barnett ran a 4.64, Will Witherspoon ran a 4.68.

The thinking is that he won't be available in the 2nd. He's probably the top-rated MLB on most boards at this time, over Mayo and Goff. Smart move, waiting until Maualuga and Laurinaitis announced they would return. While he may not be in this class, it's wishful thinking that he'll be around at 41.

I like that but is he big enough to take in round 1? Dude if going to have to jump through the rough to be worthy of the #10 pick IMO

The problem with the mock from WaltersFootball is that I doubt that Lofton will be there in the 2nd round not after he works out.

The issue with Lofton is not size he might not be 6'2", but he is 240lbs. and from what I have read he is one of the strongest players on the OU team and he benched 400lbs. at spring drills.

MLB is one of the weakest positions on the team and this guy looks like a real player.

Someone mentioned that he would need 330lbs. DTs in front of him, well we already have 1 [Hollis] so we go get another.

Ya dig?

Here's these guys take on Lofton (a site I visit for inside info and who the Saints scout and like)....

'Curtis Lofton, LB, Oklahoma - Lofton's breakout year in 2007 showed he was ready for the NFL. Lofton has good range and instincts, and can play the run well. Lofton will likely test out very well, and could see a big jump in his draft stock.
Projected Round: Late 1st'

If this guy runs a good 40, gets a great bench press, tests out well in IQ and so on...I would LOVE to draft him at #10...Wasn't Willis in this guy's position last year? and boomed up draft boards cause of the combine?

Also, hey isn't Gibbs from Oklahoma and coached there? maybe he can give Payton a biased opinion to draft this guy that came from his alma-mater. :ezbill:

I wonder what REALCHRISM opinion is on this guy.

Seek and ye shall find...LOL...just kidding..anyway, I was surprised to see Lofton come out but not because of lack of talent or anything. There was just no indication that he would declare. That being said, Lofton is a phenomenal player. Think Troy Polamalu or Bob Sanders at MLB. I use that comparison because when Troy came out of USC, there were some questions on his size and whether or not he would be able to play at a high level in the NFL. The same questions were out there about Bob Sanders to an even greater degree. But when you looked at both on film, you saw just pure football players. That's what you get in a guy like Curis Lofton. He's a pure football player and a guy with a nose for the football. He tackles VERY WELL and, for a guy his size, he can lay you out. His game will remind you a bit of Jon Beason who now plays for the Panthers but I actually believe that on the field he plays faster than Beason and has better awareness and reactionary skills. He knows how to keep himself clean and does not give up on a play. Lofton is just a football player who you cannot keep off the field. He will fit somewhere and that somewhere for him has been at MLB. Some guys become compromised by size when they make it to the pros. Like Troy and Bob, that won't be the case for Lofton and fully expect that he will become a solid MLB in the NFL.

While I think he should carry a first round grade, he's likely an early to mid second rounder. I liken his situation more to Bob Sanders than I do Troy Polamalu. Troy was a guy I think was given more a benefit of the doubt coming out of USC than Sanders was given coming out of Iowa. Even though Lofton is coming from OU, a big time program, I do not believe the reputation is there in terms of producing top flight MLBs for teams to overlook his measureables. I will say that last year it worked out well for Jon Beason so it could work out well for Taylor. Taylor could very well move up into the mid part of the first round with a great workout. If that is the case, and the Saints were able to trade down to get him, I would not be upset with that selection.
