N/S Brandin Cooks traded to Rams (1 Viewer)

Thought we gave up a 4th but got a 3rd back plus their first is a little bit higher. Seems like they got back a little bit more value than what we did esp with him only having one year left on his contract....

The pats did not recoup what they gave up to get him . The first round picks are basically a wash, not much difference between the 32nd pick they gave up to get him and the 23rd they got for giving him up to the Rams. But that was only part of the deals. In our trade they also traded a 3rd rd pick for a 4th rd pick to get him and now with the Rams they traded away a 4th rd pick for a 6th rd to get rid of him. So basically, they traded down from the 3rd rd to the 6th to rent him for a year. I wouldn’t exactly call that getting back what they gave up.

To say that the 1st rounders are a wash is incorrect. To get from 32 to 23 on the trade value chart is the equivalent of getting an extra mid to late 3rd rounder in the deal. Going from the 4th round to the 6th round is the equivalent of giving up a late 5th rounder. So, they did recoup what they gave up (and a little more).

Interesting!

methinks Pats are trading up to get a QB...Brady is older than Brees and they dont even have a Taysom Hill equivalent (cmiiw)

Cooks - he's a good player. But he is not a great one. He is a bit one dimensional. I much prefer MT to him any time any day.

I think it was a good trade for both Saints and Pats. Not so sure of Rams tbh

Rams do look scary, but I think if we can get 2 contributors from the draft and plug our remaining holes through minimum FA, we'll be able to handle them

Genius Patriots rent Cooks for essentially no cost at all draft wise and pay him on his existing rookie contract for a receiver that is at his peak in his career.

Only the Patriots.

I wonder if Cooks complained about Brady's arm strength.

I think this is a clear sign that he's still 100% about the money. And the Patriots never pay anyone not named Brady.

Cook can recite the signing bonus for DeAndre Hopkins, one of last year’s first-round receivers, and also how much of that check goes to the government, how much he’ll have left over, how much should go this way and that. “It’s one of those things,” Cooks says, “short-term greed, long-term wealth.” He attributes it all to his time around the Ruhls(Alex Spanos' daughter's family). “They were just teaching me those things I never was exposed to growing up.”

I had no doubt the Patriots would not sign Cooks to his 2nd contract. I'm shocked that they found a team to give up a 1st round pick for him. He is a good NFL WR with some rather obvious limitations....this is a classic example of why the Pats are the Pats...

3 1000 yard seasons in a row is worth a first round pick.

Not when there is a big contract on the way.

You either pay a lot of money to a player or give up a high draft pick for him. Not both.

First round picks are like gold. Landry was a second/4th which I feel like cooks should be going for. Only top 5 players at there position should go for 1sts. Besides qbs

I understand and respect that many Saints fans, unlike fans of most NFL teams, view the Patriots as a kindred spirit. After all, they, too have a mastermind head coach; the most accomplished in the game. They, too were unfairly targeted through capricious punishments by the league (albeit punishments which pale in comparison to those the Saints put up with). But the Patriots worship in this thread is getting a bit ridiculous. Remember, this is the same team who traded away a good, young starting quarterback for only a mid-second round pick:

Not only did the Patriots not get to "rent" Brandin Cooks a year for free, they gave up the trade value of an early third round pick to do so. Not only is that not a steal, it is at best an even exchange. I certainly wouldn't give up an early third for one year of Brandin Cooks. We drafted Alvin Kamara early in the third! The myth of the "genius" Patriots is just that.

A 23rd is probably a wash when considering the talent pool being inferior to last year's impressive draft class.

You're overvalueing picks and don t understand the bust probability or the difficulty of finding top 5 players. Luckily... No one in the NFL believes that. A top 5 player yields multiple 1st picks or being package with a player.

The Pats saw what we all saw, Cooks is a good player who wants to be paid like a great player. Let the Rams pay him like a top 5 WR. The more money going to Cooks the less they have to spend on their truly great players.

I mean think about it, if we're making a list of the top WRs in the league where is Cooks? I think I can come up with 10 ahead of him just off the top of my head.

1. A. Brown
2. Julio
3. OBJ
4. D. Hopkins
5. M. Thomas
6. M. Evans
7. A.J. Green
8. K. Allen
9. D. Thomas
10. Larry Fitz
