NFL meeting to ban hip drop tackles.. (Update: Now banned) (4 Viewers)

Seems they just don't want people to hit people in the legs from behind, makes sense.

Just sayin... that Rams play isn't much different than the Mark Andrews play highlighted in the beginning of this thread and can easily be flagged when they need to "shave a few points."

Also Horse Collar is a very natural tackling technique... It's just illegal now. Hell, it used to be legal as long as you used their hair, and didn't grab the pads.

Perhaps if they named it the “Full body weight deliberate karate chop tackle,” there would be less outrage. 😂

How often were they happening when there was no rule against them?
Chop block was an actual technique taught to reaching oline men... so all the time during a game. Horse collars were also a valid way to tackle someone for years. So multiple times a game. Targeting was how you made the Monday Night Countdown, so every time it was possible.

Horse collars didn’t really come into focus until around 2002, when a young man named Roy Williams essentially introduced the NFL to the technique.

There is a reason it’s called the Roy Williams rule.

It's called the Roy Williams rule because he wiped out Terrel Owens with it, which finally sparked the rule change.... but the actual move has been in football since long before 2002

just like dropping full weight on someones legs has been around long before recently..

He injured several players over the course of a few years, which caused the rule change, not just T.O.

The move may have been sprinkled in here and there pre-Roy, but it wasn’t until him that it became a deliberate act that needed to be legislated out.

who said I was mad? I am just talking.

Why do you assume everyone you speak to is "mad"?

I merely answered a dudes question. and suddenly... "MAD" like, you try to label people all the time to act like you are better than them. I'm catching on to your bull...

This is not a hip drop lol

You guys are making yourselves mad over stuff you seem to not understand.
There's a lot of extremist views in this thread, I'll give you that. I agree about the injuries caused by some of these tackles, so I've backed off my initial stance a little. And it is now a rule, so I'll wait and see how it plays out. But right off the bat, the example provided of the Mark Andrews tackle already sends up a red flag. Does it meet the criteria of the penalty? Yeah, I guess so. Was it malicious and intentional? Not in my opinion. And that's where I think the call will be inconsistently administered.

It's in the rules. I hope it doesn't muddy the waters any further. 🤞
