NOF: Saints in position to get under the cap with ease and create another $30+ million in cap space to add new players (1 Viewer)

That's the basic story line some are trying to sell us. I'm not buying it. It seems to be a coping mechanism to not lose all faith in the prospects of the team over the next few years even though there is evidence of the last two years that the current strategy is a failure.

Of course it has failed. But, it's not like we haven't seen two years this bad or worse before and come out on the other side. Hell Payton had to cut a bunch of guys after the three 7-9 season to reset the roster after guys he brought in failed to deliver.

It's really not, and the effort to boil down the subject to that is nonsense. It's an enormously complex subject and to act like a know it all doesn't help the discussion.

And to be clear, I've never once said your suggested approach is wrong. I'm not trying to sell you anything. I'm just saying there are multiple approaches and there are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches, that is all. There's room for discussing both approaches.

And for all we know, Loomis might decide working back to a more traditional approach might be the way forward and it's going to take time to get there.

Again, I'll say, none of us have a crystal ball, or have access to Loomis' grand plan. We'll just have to wait and see how he approaches this offseason.

Loom is Said he wants to get to the middle of the pack cap wise. He said it would take 4 or 5 years. This is year 3. He mentioned age and said retirements would be the driving force. This was after Payton went to the booth.

The cap jump in 2024/2025 is going to help. The guy who runs OTC said teams have Bern parking money in 2024/2025 knowing the big jumps will help teams get right.

Interesting. I had not heard Loomis talks about that plan. I recall that last offseason he talked about working on getting the cap back under control but I didn't know that he had a specific 4 or 5 year plan. That time scale kind of makes sense given that I think that by that point Cam, Demario, and AK will be out of their contracts and I think Carr's contract is structured so that we would let him go before the last year of his contract in 2025.

I don’t think he was talking about us when he said that. We are tremendously higher than every team the next two years in cap commitments. We already know we were the only team projected to be $80m over the cap in 2024, here are the current cap commitments for 2025 before we do our annual restructuring:

Our strategy is what it is at this point, I’ll never like it but we don’t have the ability to really change it for years. We aren’t spending a ton more than anyone else, that above $295m cap figure only translates to $195m of actual cash spending in 2025.

He didn't say which teams, but that teams are operating as if the cap is going to be $300M in 2025.

It's not being a know it all. You have your opinion and I have mine. I think your opinion relies on a lot of assumptions where mine is drawn from things I can see in the data, which I am at least providing for context. If my math is wrong, I welcome someone to come in and correct me because I am trying to understand this part of football more than I did a few years ago. I think it helps the discussion to work to understand how the cap works, how most teams in the league manage the cap, how our team manages the cap and what the repercussions of the different strategies are in real terms. The terms we are most familiar with is the Saints cap situation which is vastly different than all other teams.

Did you not read my very next post? Because why say this when i addressed it already?

Elvis was responding to being called a know it all... and then when he responded he was questioned as to what would compel him to even respond. That is called GAS LIGHTING.
