NS.. ex-NFL players sue league... It's starting to make sense now (3 Viewers)

Bill, can you say a little more about this, just out of curiosity? Is it because of some insurance you have to buy to fly other people? What kind of flying were you doing that isn't viable business-wise anymore? Do you know of others this has happened to in this industry or a similar one?

Yea, exactly. More often than not, comments like this stem from organizations like

The US Chamber of Commerce and the Institute for Legal Reform, both of which, contrary to what they sound like, are lobbying arms for the insurance industry. The US Chamber of Commerce has zero to do with government.

They create hundreds of websites in an attempt to make it appear that the campaign against "lawsuit abuse" is a grassroots effort - it isn't, it's bought and paid for by the insurance industry. To the insurance industry, reform means making it more difficult to sue an insurer (the same insurers who denied thousands of valid Katrina claims and were hit with bad faith damages over and over again, which were upheld by the Supreme Court). These are the people who float the idea that lawsuits raise insurance premiums.

Interestingly enough, Louisiana is middle of the pack in their own studies of court systems. LA is not considered an overly favorable state for lawsuits, yet they still push for reform here.

Of course, our insurance car insurance premiums are high because insurers rate us as the least safe driving state, and our property insurance premiums are high because insurers rate us as likely to be hit by natural disasters.

Still, they float overly suggestive polls like this one, and then use that to back up claims that our insurance rates are high because of lawsuits, and not the actual reasons they would be high. If you believe it, you're a sucker. (and by the way, half the reforms they propose are unconstitutional)

Sample question: do you think lawsuit abuse is bad?

Let's apply this the other way - do you think homeowner abuse is bad? Do you think it's bad for insurers to abuse citizens of LA? See, when you add the word "abuse" to a poll, it produces pretty meaningless results.

Check your PMs.

I chose to delete my thoughts on this matter because it's not an issue anyone can do anything about. It's just personal experiences that has affected my life negatively.

So I'll just say: Never mind.

for what it's worth, I wasn't intending to address your post specifically. This thread has turned into a referendum on how lawsuits are ruining _____, and I was trying to generally respond to that. I obviously know nothing about your situation and don't disbelieve what you posted.

I appreciate your comments, but sometimes I need to remember that no one really cares about my feelings in this regard. It was best for me to keep it to myself in the first place.

I'm really just here for the football. :shy:

you keep referring to "my point" and saying contracts not saying anything about brain damage... I don't think you understand my point cuz your stuck on something that isn't my point.

I get that the NFL will lose, because our society is so messed up but my point, that you can't seem to get, is these guys chose to hurt themselves and now they want to sue someone else for what they did to themselves... THATS THE POiNT!

as I've said several times, I'm all for giving players better health care but if you think for a second that these guys aren't trying to get millions from the NFL, you're nieve.. Health care might come with it but someone is getting several millions and if it goes the way the players want, there will be many many more who will do the same and if we're lucky, we'll still have some form of football when its done.

They may have chosen broken bones and torn ligaments, but I doubt any of them chose brain damage that would make them virtual vegetables at age 50. And have no healthcare to take care of them or their families.

You say you are for giving them better healthcare? How do you propose getting the NFL to do that if not through a lawsuit?

And I repeat, it was not done to them by themselves, it was done to them by the league and the league and owners made a heck of a lot more that players did, especially years ago. These guys are owed something. You seem to think that it's their tough luck because they didn't have guns to their heads to play. That's not the way it works.

But again, your concern is that the league may get hurt financially and have to change the game so it will ruin your entertainment that you can't see guys ram their heads into each other any more.
