NS.. ex-NFL players sue league... It's starting to make sense now (1 Viewer)

Players do have the right to outside second opinions and the right to pick the surgeon they want if surgery is needed. This is spelled out in the CBA.

Correct. As I stated in my post, they can REQUEST to get a second opinion, but can't just go out on their OWN. They have to consult with the Team Doctor first.

Sorry I wasn't clear on that.

Haven't soldiers sued for unknowingly to them being exposed to chemicals ?

Suing for getting killed by the enemy? No. Suing because the government you where serving knowingly put you at risk with something that is preventable? Acceptable. I think that applies here. Football players expect to tear ACL's and break arms. They don't expect not to be able to remember their children's names in their 40's.

Absolutely. There is litigation going on right now over this, from Vietnam it was Agent Orange and PTSD. There is constant litigation over military benefits.

Which means the medical field didn't know about the long lasting effects either and we still don't have all the answers.

Let's take your hypothesis and discuss.

The medical community did not know about the issues with concussions when these injuries were happening.

Ok, a few questions now:

1. Should they have known? Should the NFL have commissioned studies earlier to protect the players? Does the NFL, as employer, have a duty to protect its workers?

2. Who was in the best position to know? A team with billions of dollars, or a football player who may not have even graduated from college?

3. Even if no duty existed, and the NFL had no reason to perform any proactive investigation, who should pay now? Keep in mind that a player who cannot afford the treatment for his serious injuries is forced to treat at a public hospital, meaning you and I, as taxpayers, pay for his treatment.

So with that in mind, even if the NFL has completely clean hands (it doesn't but just assume for a second), is it better for us to have to take care of him with our tax revenues, or for the league that has made billions on the backs of these players to have to take care of it?

This is pure babble. No one made a decision to suffer brain damage. It happened because of football.

Omg!! Babble!!! You're telling me that running my head into a 300 pound man at full speed is smart and that there was no concern of long term injury...

Look.. I understand this is a big mess and I do see both sides but in the end, when do you walk away after willingly destroying your body?

I use to play basketball 3 times a week but when I got to the point that my ankles were swollen the next day, I stopped playing!!!!! I started playing golf...

At what point do these players have concussion after concussion and not decide to walk away. Take Barry Sandrs for instance, Jim Brown.. Guys how said enough is enough and I want to leave with my health...

The reason most of these guys stay is money... So they destroy their body for big money then sue for more when their hips are bad or traumatic brain injury...

At some point, the NFL should have a "play at your own risk" in the contracts.. Spell out the health care program and it is what it is.... If you don't want mud butt, don't drink the water in Mexico and if you don't want long term traumatic brain injuries, DON'T PLAY FOOTBALL... Or at the very least, quit after 4 years and get a regular job.

You say babble but say football causes brain injury.. So what's the solution Einstein? Based on your response, it's sue after you have brain injury!!! Mabe the smart thing is to avoid the thing that causes the injury.

Lol.. I just realized that if you were a scientist, you would try to develop a drug that helps a boxer recover faster after being knocked out in the ring... I'd try to develop a drug that helps you avoid the punch that knocked you out in the 1st place... Lol

So now we're analogizing your Metry C-League basketball career and swollen ankles to ALS, Chronic Encephalopathy and TBI leading to suicide? Something tells me you don't quite grasp the scope of this.

Sorry 'bout your ALS, Steve, but I got these swollen ankles to tend to!

Lol... What I'm trying to say is arguing with you is like arguing with my girlfriend. I'm talking about the subject and she's talking about some unrelated subject... You can probably find some misspelling in my post, why don't you find those and talk about em to make your point...

Good luck bro...

Where do you get off with that Metry-C league talk. We both know it was B, and it was just barely below A.

Like I pointed out, the guys suing are well do to, these are not your broke athlete variety. Not one Mark Brunnell among them. They are not in it for the money as much as they are in it for helping others. And if people's health does cause us to lose football will you really be upset? A sport over ones well being?

Do these billionaires really need that much more money that they can't even take care of the ones who destroyed their lives to build their fortunes?

Someone posted in another tread about back in 1905 the Government had to step in since there was so many fatalities and injuries playing football.

So people have KNOWN for over ONE HUNDRED years that football is dangerous. Lemme guess....in 10 years someone else is gonna sue and say they didn't know football was dangerous....unreal....simply unreal.

Right, back when they used to not wear helmets and run the flying V with the entire team and every single play was a running play. And 20 people died on the field because the game was so violent. There have been countless innovations since that time to make the game safer. God forbid players rely on those safety innovations to make the game safer.

only once they have been released from duty can they sue and lets not even begin to compare the income of the two. U can chose to walk away from football anytime, not a military contract. I don't wanna sound like a bitter vet and am very proud to have sacrificed my well being for my country so it angers me when people that made millions to play a game filled with violence pretend they had no clue of the consequences. We may not have known of all the health risks when they were playing but i can assure u it doesn't take a genius to know if you continuously pound something it will break.

On a lighter note, is it wrong that I haven't even thought about family and Christmas cause I cant wait for Monday night to see the Dirty Turds fall.

Soldiers cant sue the federal government, do your homework

They can and do sue the VA regularly though for benefits and medical care, which incidentally, is the same thing these players are suing the NFL for - money for medical care.

I'm not likening the two. In fact, like I said, I think any analogy between military service for our country and any profession is flawed. They're apples and oranges. But if the point is that NFL players are acting entitled by filing suit, I'm just pointing out that vets do it too, and I don't have a problem with either.
