OLB CONNOR BARWIN: the next Urlacher?? better than curry???!!!! (1 Viewer)

Yeah, I still think Fields turned out better than a bust by far, but Fields + even Fujita's football sense = 1st Ballot HOF. Sort of like Henderson + sure hands = top 5 WR, but both miss(ed) that key element to maximize that physical talent.

no argument here.

although i must say---and i doubt that i'm alone here---- mark fields in his hey would sound pretty nice right now considering the fact that we are starting scott shanle and Dan morgan.

Barwin has tremendous upside, but a pretty low floor too.

I like him as a early second round pick, and depending on who is on the board, maybe even a late first.

He has the tools, but he has not played any one position CONSISTENTLY through the years. If he gets good coaching, I think the sky is the limit with this kid, but he will need to be stroked his first couple years.

OLB CONNOR BARWIN: the next Urlacher?

- Probably not. He's more like the next Mike Vrabel.

Better than curry?

- No way!!!

That being said, I'd love to have him on our team, but he might not fit G. Williams system. Barwins more of a 3-4 OLD, rather than a 4-3 DE or even a 4-3 OLB.

i'd have to agree with you here.

like i said. in my pie-in-the-sky fantasy we nab him in a tradedown.

at a position like corner or DE i think there is a much steeper learning curve than at linebacker. my main concern is how well can he cover because he seems to have more than enough talent to be at least a 2-down linebacker.

urlacher played numerous positions as well but his skill set translated to the nfl game to the tune of ROY honors in 2000.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Urlacher

Urlacher became a “Lobo-Back,” a cross between a linebacker and safety, and garnered much success in Long's 3-3-5 defense scheme.[5][6] He recorded 422 tackles, the third most in the school’s history, three interceptions, eleven forced fumbles and sacks. He was also the team’s return specialist and clutch wide receiver, catching seven passes for six touchdowns.[2]

like i said, he will definetly be someones linebacker at 258lbs. why not ours?

idk there....

did you see his workouts compared to GW's other 1st rd lb's?
he's a better athlete than both bulluck and mcintosh.

washing took mcintosh when they only had like two or three picks in the whole draft but williams always had his eye on him because of the athlete that he was.

here is a vid i pulled up where he backed up what he told scouts at the combine when he said that he was faster than the 4.5 he ran there (which was still better than cushing or matthews).

I took notice of Barwin recently myself. I don't know if he will be as good as some are saying, but he seems to have the buzz right now. At this point, I'm kind of hoping we end up with Barwin and another pick (hopefully a FS) before the second round is up. If we don't get him, I hope he is a bust, if we do get him, I hope he is a HoF! :) :)

I like this guy to and would be much happier with him over Matthews. Barwin and William Moore in the event of a trade down wouldn't be bad.

can line up as a DE for pass rushing duties....can play some olb although very green here.....can play TE also, and is an allround athlete....

anyguy who can do that many things well is worth a high first day pick.....

But he is ranked the #4 OLB, and could probably be had with one of out 4th round picks....I wouldn't complain.

What??? He will probably be gone in the 2nd round. No way he lasts past the 3rd round. NO WAY. Not even close.

If you are suggesting he won't be there for our 4th round pick, how would we be able to draft him at all?

We are bringing in a ton of players that are not rated high enough for our 14 pick. It's pretty obvious that the Saints want to get a second or third round pick. They may not be able to do it, but they wouldn't be bringing in Ron Brace and a host of other 2nd round candidates otherwise.

Why would you even suggest that he might last to the 4th round? Curry will go in the top 5, Matthews and Cushing will go in the later half of the 1st or early 2nd round. Are you suggesting that NO ONE will pick a LB for two complete rounds? Especially one that has so much promise like Barwin.

It's just rediculous to suggest that we could draft him in the 4th.

i think the top 4 OLB prospects are:

1) Curry
2) Cushing
3) Matthews
4) Barwin.

Honestly i think barwin should be #2

but the only problem is that he is more like a 3-4 linebacker. originally a DE

see, i really don't think that is the case at all.

i'll give you 3 reasons why:

1) not only does he better Gw's top linebacker selections of the past 10 years in terms of athleticism but he nearly comes close to matching CARLOS RODGERS in terms of atleticism as well and rodgers is a cornerback who is 50lbs lighter!

compare his 40-times, vertical, 3-cone, and shuttle to Gw's top corner in 2005 and you will be pretty amazed.

2) some of the best 4-3 linebackers are responsible for defending a larger area of field than downhill thumpers like shanle.

bring your attention to segment 1:50 of the video where barwin moves from the left side of the defensive line, drops in zone, stops, starts, stops, then starts again to hurry the throw of the qb over a distance of like 30ft. in maybe 3 seconds.

that's his shuttle time on display. that's his latteral agility in action! that's an aaron curry type play and no one is questioning his ability to play 4-3 olb.

3) no matter who you can name as who you can consider to be the best 4-3 outside linebacker in the league right now

beit karlos dansby

or lance briggs

barwin has their number in physical skills hands down.

CBS Sports called him a Mike Vrabel clone. I think if NE or KC has the opportunity to snag him, they will.

i really doubt that he will make it past pick #20 given the past history of atletic freaks like him being picked in the top 15 of the draft.

again, look at keith rivers last year as evidence.

i really belive now that the top 3-4 prospects at olb in this draft goes in this order:

1) aaron curry
2) michael johnson
3) connor barwin
4)aaron maybin
5) brian orakpo
6) everette brown.
