Oops, that's my number (Senator Vitter)[MULTI-MERGED] (1 Viewer)

Those just might be the most credible words that John Kerry has ever produced...

LMAO @ Jindal: >>Link
When Jindal, R-Metairie, was asked whether he remained an ally of Vitter, who last week was linked to a Washington, D.C. escort service, Jindal said: “What do you mean by ally?”

>>God help us.

Don't blame Mary for Breaux, Tauzin, Jefferson and Livingston. She's already guaranteed us more money with those future oil royalties than any of those sellouts ever did.

Speaking of not selling out, I was trying to think of the 3 Louisiana politicians from my lifetime who contributed the most to our state in terms of delivering that which they are up there to get (regardless of your feelings on pork) and/or holding power.

Without the hard numbers (real or adjusted for the time), I'd offer:

A) former U.S. Senator Russell Long - Long was the man and rose through the ranks through a long career

B) former U.S. Representative Hale Boggs (died in a tragic planecrash in Alaska) - would rise through the ranks to become House Majority Whip and then Majority Leader

C) former U.S. Senator J. Bennett Johnston - if you remember the battle for U.S. Senate against David Duke (and if you voted for Duke in that election, the civilized world thinks you are the worst humanity has to offer), Johnston had a commercial for the things he got for Louisiana. It was a scroll longer than the list of names shown at the Super Bowl tribute to the 9/11 victims during U2's performance in New Orleans that year. Really. The list of projects, facilities and deals he worked was amazing.

:)

But Mary, win or lose, has guaranteed us an income stream of over $650,000,000 a year until they get all the oil out of the Gulf. I think God already has helped us. And she deserves to be reelected regardless of anyone's partisan beliefs.

:)

We could really use a guy like J. Bennett right now. Hell, we could really use a Ted Stevens right now.

New poll:

Should David Vitter (R-Whores 'n Diapers) resign as senator?

A. Yes
B. No
C. Depends®

TPS;541505 But Mary said:
It's not partisan. I think she is a weak link and pretty much disregarded by most in the Senate. The one female that got us that royalty agreement was Katrina, and the feelings of guilt prevailing in DC at the time. To Mary's credit, she was able to use those guilty feelings in spite of the best efforts of Madame Governor, who with her threats and lawsuits almost managed to disipate the pity that had built up to that point.

And J. Bennett Johnston, what did he do for the State but get a giant ditch dug to Shreveport at the cost of God knows how much money. That Corps money(nearly $2 billion) might have been better spent, say, building an effective levee system around New Orleans, perhaps?

What makes you think "she is a weak link and pretty much disregarded by most in the Senate"? Just curious.

She has(maybe had, my observation was a few years ago) a horribly disorganized staff; she has nothing to show for her years in the Senate other than the offshore royalty bill(which I attribute more to Katrina, than Mary); she is not given a great deal of responsibility by her party's leadership(though she has some good committee assignments); her voice seems to be given no weight. Maybe I am expecting too much, but year after year we send Senators to Washington in part to look out for this State, and they have precious little to show for it. Fort Polk is fading into oblivion; Barksdale will probably be on the chopping block before too long; no big projects, no big Government investment in the State(other than entitlement payments). Good grief, take a look at what that old fogey Robert Byrd brings to West Virginia of all places. I would love to see even a modest portion of that investment come to Louisiana, who unfortunately happens to share bottom five status with West Virginia is a lot of unfortunate categories.

So because YOU attribute the bill to Katrina (who wrote the legislation and saw it approved by a Congress, Senate and President with very little motivation to do so) it means that she hasn't done anything? You think that bill wrote and passed itself? There were several bills regarding the offshore royalties and it's not by accident that this one was chosen over all the others. Bobby Jindal was attempting to push a bill through that was much more favorable to Louisiana, but couldn't do it even when his Party was the ruling Party.

Katrina only legitimized the need for such a bill. It was going to write or pass itself. It is unbelievably impressive for a second term Senator to get that kind of legislation passed. She gets extra credit because she's a Democrat and the Government was majroty GOP at the time.

I am far from a strong supporter of Mary and would like to see more effectiveness myself, but I have to face the fact that she is a second term Senator from a state with only a handful of electoral votes. No Senator gets anything done until they have built up political capital. When you have a Senator who has proven to be competent and a good representative for your state, you send than back so they can gather that political capital.

She currently sits on the Senate Appropriations Committee which she recently landed after the Democrats took control of the Senate. She has by far been the loudest voice for Katrina victims.

For the fans of the GOP, she was heavily involved in the Missile Defense Bill. She is also huge in agencies involved in adoption and supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as well as the ban on 'desecration of the American flag' (which the Democratic Party voted against). I only mention any of this to show that she is a respectable moderate in Washington. What she needs now is seniority and that can only come with time.

I think that you should be banned from posting on the EE until you retract your baseless statements.

There is neither guilt or shame in DC. (Ex. A: Vitter's press conference last week.)

Perhaps you fail to remember October 2005 when Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK, then in the majority) refused to allow revisiting allocations to the bridge to nowhere in his state in order to shift $$ to Katrina rebuilding? This was at a time when bodies were still being retrieved as the waters retreated.

Or Sept. 05 when Hastert said that NOLA shouldn't be rebuilt since it was all below sea level?

Mary Landrieu is effective because she is an effective ally of one of the two family-based national political machines in the country. You may not like the machine she aligns with, but they have clout and they may hold both houses and the white house after Nov 08.

Vitter is not effective because he is a disgraced laughingstock who is not an effective ally of either of these machines -- indeed, he has antagonized the Bush machine in a way that probably hurts Louisiana's interests but benefitted his own attention-seeking. He is no longer useful as an ally of the religious-based special interests. Instead, he is now an embarrassment to them, and also is now only somewhat useful to K Street lobbyists.

Wow. Can't express an opinion you don't like. Who died and made you king, as my momma would say.

P.S. As I said, other than the royalty bill, where's the beef?
