Pass coverage lapses is the difference between 2-2 and 4-0 (1 Viewer)

I call that the D.A special there.

Todays game was an example of bad coaching. The team is either coaching the team to.play this way or they are allowing it.
So our DB's running into each other is bad coaching? And PA panicking and committing a borderline DPI is DA's fault??? DA may not be the best HC but he is one of the best @ being a DC and especially DBs. Now you can maybe blame him for picking or playing certain players but not the way they are coached

I didnt say DA specifically. There are S.T coaches, secondary, line ones, TE ones, the OC.

The offense and STs also spotted the Clowns 14 points.
The offense mismanaged the clock on the last drive.
Koo kicked a 58 yard FG on 4th and 10 to win the game.
Atlanta only gained 30 yards on that last drive.

And the defense did what it's been doing since the season began.
Just how did the O mismanage the clock on the last drive???? We did 2 fake QB sneaks to run clock and make ATL use their TO's . On 3rd and goal we scored. What would you have then do, run a 3rd fake QB sneak on 3rd and goal and have ONE shot to get the TD?? SMH

I doubt Rizzi coached Shaheed to make a bonehead play that every HS player knows not to do. Robertson has 17yrs coaching DBs I doubt he coached Adebo to commit THREE DPI's in this game. I don;t think KK called a bad game, maybe a play here or two I didn't agree with but he put up 24pts with half the starting OL missing and missing TH for most of the game

Not really. How about trying to field a punt inside the 5 yard line, something you should never do, muffing said punt into the end zone, Falcons recover for a TD.

Not to be outdone, Carr tries to flick a short pass under the defender but gets it tipped high in the air, Falcons pick it off and return it for a pick 6.

That's 14 points on two stupid plays that should not happen. Take away one of them and Saints win.

You are going to draw a lot of clowns and dead falcons for this post, but I get what you're saying. It's not the overall defense, but if you need the defense to hold up with the clock running out it's going to be a loss. We all knew it when there was 1:00 on the clock that we were going to lose this game. Same as last week.

I get the point in that yes in the end the defense failed to stop the last drive and that directly resulted in two losses, but I think that is reductive reasoning that fails to see the forest through the trees. They should not have been in the position to have to stop a team from kicking a FG or a TD in the last minute and they wouldn't have been if not for the offense totaling failing against Philly, not being able to finish and sustain drives against ATL, the pick 6 by Carr, and the fumbled punt for a TD. Even the best defenses likely give up a 58 yard FG mot of the times in those situations. On the other hand, if you hold a team under 16 points in two games you really should win with even decent offense and not catastrophic special teams.

I'd really like to see the stats on how often all NFL teams give up TDs or FGs in two minute situations and how the Saints defense compares. My anecdotal view is that it's about the same as most NFL teams, but if I'm wrong, I'll admit it if the stats show otherwise.

That says everything we need to know about the defense. That scenario is common in the NFL. The offense scored 3 touchdowns today and won TOP by nearly 9 minutes. The defense needed to hold up for 60 seconds and had no plan to do so.

But, you're ignoring that the offense also gave Atlanta 7 points and special teams gave them another 7. I don't think many teams win games where they give up a special teams TD and a pick 6.

I talk all the time about lucky coin flip games being the difference between being a big time, championship team versus being a mere mortal…we have lost two of these in a row.

Feels like no big deal on the surface and we do have plenty of time to make it up, but odds are, whether we do make the playoffs or don’t, I promise you we will be looking back at these two back to back games as something that screwed us out of either a playoff berth or much better seeding.

We just drop too many of these. We are missing that little “extra” that good teams seem to figure out how to exert and win these sorts of games.

I think that little extra is usually either an elite pass rusher who gets the sacks that stop drives or two minute drills or a QB that extends drives and gets TDs in two minute drills at the end of the half and at the end of a a game. We lack both of those. It's why everyone wants a franchise QB and pass rushers and why they both go so high in drafts.

And I do think that DA struggles with game management at the end of games and doing things like making sure you get the last possession of each half. So that is some of it.

As a result, this team isn't good enough to make up for dumb mistakes like fumbling a punt return inside the 2 or throwing a pick 6 after double clutching a screen pass.

But, you're ignoring that the offense also gave Atlanta 7 points and special teams gave them another 7. I don't think many teams win games where they give up a special teams TD and a pick 6.
I'm not ignoring it. They dug themselves out of that deficit AND the Special Teams TD deficit to take the lead with 1 minute to go. The defense kept them in the game until the offense was able to do their part and then the defense gave it away at the end.

The point is that, yes, special teams and an offensive mess up contributed to the loss. BUT…….both last week and this week Carr got the offense in the lead with under 2 minutes left and both times the defense forked it up.

What good are you if you play well for 58 minutes and crappy the last 2?
