Pass coverage lapses is the difference between 2-2 and 4-0 (2 Viewers)

You are going to draw a lot of clowns and dead falcons for this post, but I get what you're saying. It's not the overall defense, but if you need the defense to hold up with the clock running out it's going to be a loss. We all knew it when there was 1:00 on the clock that we were going to lose this game. Same as last week.
You're exactly right, the defense is really good until you need them to be. My thought was definitely, oh no we left them 1 minute.

The point is that, yes, special teams and an offensive mess up contributed to the loss. BUT…….both last week and this week Carr got the offense in the lead with under 2 minutes left and both times the defense forked it up.

What good are you if you play well for 58 minutes and crappy the last 2?

Funny thing, the defense didn't play "crappy".

In the Eagles game, the Eagles only scored 15 points, the defense delivered 4 turnovers, and even the STs delivered a blocked punt inside the Eagles 40. The offense only scored 12 points.

The last drive in this game, the Clowns gained 30 yards and kicked a 58 yard FG on 4th and 10. Clowns only went past the Saints' 20 once. Of the 4 FGs the Eagles kicked, 3 of them were 50+. The defense didn't spot the Clowns 14 points.

I know they didn’t play crappy. They played well for 58 minutes and crappy for the last 2.

How about let the defense play like crap for 58 min and then play great for the last 2 min. That’ll show them it was the offenses fault. 🤦‍♂️

Common sense and facts are irrelevant with some people.

It’s a complimentary game. Sometimes the defense needs to step up and sometimes the offense needs to step up. Today, despite mistakes, the offense stepped up and gave them the lead with a minute left.

I think this is the most important point. Despite not having a great game, the offense did what they needed to do at the end to win the game and the defense simply didn't.

Offense has to do better defensive
I get it. I know who they are. I watched every snap. They are a bend but don't break defense. But the offense with all of the adversity they have faced, all of the boneheaded plays and terrible protections managed to get go ahead scores in the last minutes of the game the last two weeks. The defense needed to hold up for a short amount of time and couldn't do it.
By that time they've already been on the field a ton. The offense has to be better with scoring drives. Complementary football. They have to figure out how to get others involved also outside of kamara, olave, hill and shaheed.

The offense could have stepped up before the last 2 minutes of the game and scored more.

The Saints won the time of possession by nearly 9 minutes today and the defense was only on the field for 1:30 in the last 10 minutes of the game and the offense took the lead. The offense did what they needed to do.

The thing is, the NFL is kind of a made-for-TV sport where, intentionally, most games are close, and decided in the last few minutes. It's not like HS or the NCAA where some games are just uneven mismatches before kickoff. There's a salary cap, and the total huge amount of money involved means that the coaching and management ranks are highly optimized. All of that makes for better ratings.

If your defense cannot hold up in the final minutes, you're going to lose a lot of big games.

I'm not ignoring it. They dug themselves out of that deficit AND the Special Teams TD deficit to take the lead with 1 minute to go. The defense kept them in the game until the offense was able to do their part and then the defense gave it away at the end.

The defense was the reason they dug out of that deficit both because they held them to only 9 point until the last kick and also because after the offense couldn't score with 4 chances inside the 10, the defense held Atlanta to a 3 and out and got the offense the ball back at the 50. The defense bailed the offense out over and over again against Atlanta and never really broke. I mean the game winning kick was 58 yards.

And, against Philly, it was the Saints offense that has 50 seconds to drive for a score but Carr threw a bad interception. The offense had the last possession and failed to close it out. So I don't see how you can blame the defense for both of those.
