If they released Gilmore, they would have gotten nothing in return at all. In a move like this, the Patriots get some kind of compensation while also ensuring Gilmore doesn't end up on a team like Kansas City.

I just read some breaking news from NFL TR That the Panthers just traded for Gilmore. They sent the Pats a 2023 sixth-round pick. I thought he was released! They may have done a last minute deal before he was released. IDK.

Correct, the panthers have the most cap next summer and didn't want to lose him to green bay or somewhere else. Pats also got LAST MINUTE compensation for a guy in another conference

He doesn't have a choice in where he'd be traded to. His contract had no language in it for trade destination selection, so Carolina's 2023 sixth rounder was probably the highest bid... which makes you wonder as to just how healthy Gilmore is.

With our luck, he'll play like a DPOY. If the Saints had traded for him, he'd probably be Jason David or Brandon Browner.
