As bad as i feel for Sean Payton, the fact that he trusted Goodell to deliver a fair punishment and underestimated how much of a power-drunk maniac he is was his downfall. Let this be a lesson to every other player and coach in the league: Don't admit a thing without a Lawyer, because you effectively remove the possibility of contesting the eventual ruling.

If payton could've proven discrimination by the league in how the saints were punished unequally compared to other teams, he could've had strong standing to mitigate his punishment.

No he screwed up by lying, stop making excuses, the guy lied and is paying the price

Wow, you're a real piece of work. You feel bad for a guy that turned a blind eye to the abhorrent bounty system going on in his locker room, but you vilify the guy that held him accountable.

I wasnt aware that Payton admitted anything. I do remember he and Loomis apologizing for it happening "under their watch". Furthermore, it isnt too late for him to fight this

It's not that he was suspended or fined. He's guilty in this and deserves punishment. But an entire year when he wasn't the mastermind and what equates to a $7.5 million fine is excessive. That's the issue most fans have with it. Not that we got caught. We know we did this and 99% of us understand we should have prohibitive measures taken against us. It's the severity that's unjust. I think an 8 game suspension and a $2 million fine on Payton, with all the other imposed fines, suspensions, and loss of draft picks in staying place as originally handed down, would've been stern but understandable and aside from some panic, most wouldn't have much issue with it.

wait a second.

You scream for payton's blood but then celebrate the fact that the packers got off of the hook?

So who's the joke here?

There is no due process in this Goodell commissioned league.

Im no lawyer but i would think that there is some federal labor review board that he could appeal to even outside of the NFL like the EEOC. No employer is beyond some level of accountability to someone. Just look at the starcaps case. There had to have been some type of legal recourse he could've taken than to just fall at the feet of Goodell and expect any sort of leniency for that doosh.

Really? I screamed for Payton's blood?

I'm sure in your little world, what the Packers did (and stopped doing when the league told them to) and what the Saints did, are the same. In reality, they are not even remotely similar, but again, if your convoluted "logic" (for lack of a better word) makes you feel better, then by all means, keep frothing at the mouth, and put everybody but the Saints personnel who screwed your team under the microscope.

Exactly. He not only allows it to happen, he lies to the league and tells his assistants to cover it up. If this was happening to any other team in the league, the outrage from this board would be just a vocal. But trying to excuse the lack of integrity and character for the people involved is crazy. Payton should be fired regardless. It's a no win situation for anybody that comes in as interim. If the interim has success as the commander then you think he is going to want to go back down to being a soldier or if he fails do you think the team is going to have confidence in him when Payton comes back. Benson has to fire Payton for the long term health of the franchise.

Nobody knows that really happened...I dont care what Goodell says. Even Goodell himself said "if he didnt know, he shouldve known", so that tells me he's just assuming Payton knew without any solid evidence, alot like you

see...we deserve to get royally screwed on our first offense but Green Bay deserves no punishment whatsoever. It's not the crime you have issue with, only the color of the jersey.

This is why no one here is taking you seriously. You fail to understand that there was no evidence that we'd done anything in 2009 & 2010 and there still isn't any evidence that we tried to maliciously end any careers.

As recently as this year, Payton said he was entirely unaware of the bounties -- "a claim contradicted by others," the league said. And according to the investigation, Payton received an email before the Saints' first game in 2011 that read, "PS Greg Williams put me down for $5000 on Rogers (sic)." When Payton was shown that email by NFL investigators, he acknowledged it referred to a bounty on Rodgers, whose Packers beat the Saints in Week 1.

Sean Payton of New Orleans Saints banned one year for bounties - ESPN

But I suppose ESPN is part of the greater conspiracy, too, hmm?
