Preseason 1 Report Card (1 Viewer)

How can you have that opinion if you watched the first drive of the game? He made the plays that were there on the drive, he was the offense, what more do you want? Outside their good drives they both had problems.

Having watched the first drive multiple times it's pretty easy to have that opinion. That first drive was quick easy throws to his first read on every play. Snap, look at his first read and throw. Yes his throw on the run to Callaway was beautiful but it'll take more than that to be a starter.

The issue for him has always been going through his progressions, reading the defense, fundamentals and throwing the deep ball. And as soon as he was taken out of his comfort zone of quick throws he struggled. His INT he made a bad read of the defense and threw the route like the RB was going against man-to-man instead of zone. He only went through his progressions twice out of all of his dropbacks, one resulted in a nice third down conversion, the other resulted in an ugly dump off pass attempt to the RB. His fundamentals still haven't improved much either, that almost INT was a bad footwork which resulted in a terrible throw.

Next week will be more telling when he has to play without a receiver like Callaway. When his first read isn't open can he read the coverage right, go through his progressions and make an accurate throw. I'd also like to see Payton put in a play action deep shot play, can he get it deep or will he underthrow the WR.

They were the same type of throws that got Jameis down the field on his drive. If your first read is open and you throw it to him, is there something wrong with that?

No. My point was as soon as Taysom had to do something other than throw it to his first read, his level of play dropped significantly.

According to Nick, Jameis went through his progressions more often. He has a brief breakdown of the film:

I still think there's a huge difference in the quality of Winston's good throws. He leads his receivers open when he's hot and I just don't see that with Taysom. Taysom seems to do better on timing throws to spots while Winston likes to hit crossers.
