Preseason 1 Report Card (2 Viewers)

Jameis had some ugly throws like the one well behind the TE on a short cross and an out to the right that should have been toward the sideline but was inside and a defender got his hands on it.

Taysom had the ugly throw to the RB and the one deeper throw on the wrong side of the receiver that almost got picked.

Jameis had some nice throws to open recievers and capped off the drive with a nice TD throw. Taysom sustained a drive with some nice throws to open recievers and had a great throw under pressure. His running game failed him and killed the drive.

It was tit for tat. The ints and TDs weren't indicitive of the actual plays. The actual Ints didn't even illustrate their worst throws. The TD didn't illustrate the best throw of the game.

I can tell you when Payton evaluates his QBs he's not going to look at the TDs and INTs statistics and call it a day. He will grade each throw based on the film. The TD throw won't grade higher just because it was a TD.
Winston threw strikes of 26yds,33yds in the middle of the field, and a contested passing TD in the 2 min. drill. On a drive hitting 5 different receivers. Taysom couldn't do that in his wetest wildest dreams, and Winston made it look easy. If Taysom wants to be the starter, he will have to open up his game. He is playing it safe and loosing. What is Taysom going to do without Calloway against the Jags? Because he can't throw anyone open, and still only reading half the field.

How can you have that opinion if you watched the first drive of the game? He made the plays that were there on the drive, he was the offense, what more do you want? Outside their good drives they both had problems.

Taysom played with more starters (see chart below), but it’s not like he was playing with the 2011 offense. He played with McCoy 11 snaps, Trautman 16 snaps, Peat & Ruiz 20 snaps each). I’m not making excuses for his play (I believe the entire exercise was a push for both guys), just adding color.

I thought they all did some things well and some things poorly. It's the 1st time they were in real action where they could be hit. So I expect their mental clocks to need some adjusting from being in camp and knowing you won't be hit no matter what you do with the ball.

I think we saw Jameis find his mojo as it went along and Taysom was the opposite. He came out blazing and then began to falter. As a poster said in another thread, I felt like Jameis did more with less. It will be interesting to see next week when the roles are reversed and Jameis starts how he comes out the blocks and how Taysom handles working with lesser players and worst protection.

One thing that was glaring to me and I think we all knew is that our receivers are not a strong suit. I know Quez will ball out and I think we can get some production from Harris and Humphrey, but without MT it may be a little rough for whichever QB to find guaranteed matchup wins. Juwan looked good as well so maybe that can help.
Alvin is going to get a lot of targets.

So did the Raven's defense. There's a reason the Saints running game picked up later in the game. It wasn't because the Saints 2nd string O-line is better than the Saints first string O-line.
I get that. But if you have better weapons on the field you need to produce better results. Regardless of who you are playing against.

Payton is definitely going to look at scoring plays and give extra weight there. Making your best plays in the redzone when points are on the line is critical to success. The team that scores the most wins.

Maybe because some of the first string guys substituted out? It's hard to compare apples to apples with all the substitutions going in and out on both sided of the ball.
Cmon bro. The lineup Taysom had wasn't worse than what Jameis played with. He looked great for a few plays then he faltered. Jameis started bad and got hot.

Just one preseason game, but...Taysom looked like Taysom from last year, Winston looked like the guy we saw with the Bucs, and Book looked like Chase Daniel. It's gonna be a long season.

Half of the equation of your supporting cast is the players they are going against. In the preseason it's a mess out there. Our 2nd team o-line was supposed to be a disaster. They looked pretty good. Tony jones jr. was a nobody until he played the Ravens 2nd/3rd/4th string.

Maybe the lesson is that our defensive depth is pretty good?

You give extra weight to it being a condensed field and pressure situation. Many plays have that kind of consideration. 3rd down. Fighting against the clock. Using up the clock. Working with pressure on you. Etc.

I'm not going to give someone a clear win because they throw a TD. I'm going to grade a TD throw and add it up with everything else. I think Taysom's throw was a higher difficulty and better throw. I don't give him an edge because of it, I consider it a high positive along with Jameis's TD throw.

Hill: C
He looked more mature than last year. Seemed confident and had some good passes. No denying he has a strong arm. Still struggling to get through progressions and stairs down receivers. His interception was a miscommunication with the WR. Not sure if it was his or WRs fault.

Winston: C
He started slow but got into a groove. He threw some good passes and seemed confident as well. He has a strong arm as well. He seems to have happy feet and holds on to the ball too long. His interception is the same Winston we saw in Tampa. I saw it as an under throw or back shoulder throw and some are sayin he had to because of a safety and corner in front of him. He had a DB on his back shoulder as well. He shouldn’t have forced it.

Book: C+
He looked way more confident and comfortable than I thought he would. He seemed to understand the O and had nice touch on his short passes. Had a couple bad throws but he was also having to run around a lot with the poor O line. He forced that last ball but nobody plays for a tie in preseason. He had nice touch and reminded me a little of Brees with footwork and always looking down field. I think he should get a shot in practice with the ones here and there.

Over all it was underwhelming and I hope someone steps up and takes the job. It’s hard coming from Brees to this and we are spoiled but at this point I think our future isn’t in the building.

Interesting. On the radio they were adamant that it was the receivers fault on Winston’s pick as well as Hill’s

Fair assessment. They all had some good moments. The thing that really stood out to me was seeing the ball flying down the field. Winston and Hill were both able to zip the ball downfield effortlessly.

You have to think that the ability to throw the ball 10+ yards is going to beneficial.
