Preseason 1 Report Card (2 Viewers)

Taysom is Jekyl and Hyde. First series I thought he was really good. I was ready to admit I was wrong about him and that he was ready to be a starting NFL QB. He looked that good. Very next series, he was terrible.

Jameis started slow but flashed the big play talent he's capable of.

Book certainly looked poised, but the longer he was on the field, the more he seemed to come undone.

Nothing happened last night to be too encouraged or discouraged about Taysom or Jameis. It's still a toss up, and I still give the nod to Taysom based on his running ability. I think the Saints will be better suited with a running QB this year. I think we saw that Book has a lot of work to do, but has the intangibles and poise needed to play at the NFL level. The part we don't know is if that means as a starter or lifetime back up. Way too soon to tell.

As someone else somewhat suggested, all of these guys are phenomenal just for making it to where they are, but being able to do this consistently separates the men from the boys. We're still waiting for the man to emerge, if he does at all.

Hill: C
He looked more mature than last year. Seemed confident and had some good passes. No denying he has a strong arm. Still struggling to get through progressions and stairs down receivers. His interception was a miscommunication with the WR. Not sure if it was his or WRs fault.

Winston: C
He started slow but got into a groove. He threw some good passes and seemed confident as well. He has a strong arm as well. He seems to have happy feet and holds on to the ball too long. His interception is the same Winston we saw in Tampa. I saw it as an under throw or back shoulder throw and some are sayin he had to because of a safety and corner in front of him. He had a DB on his back shoulder as well. He shouldn’t have forced it.

Book: C+
He looked way more confident and comfortable than I thought he would. He seemed to understand the O and had nice touch on his short passes. Had a couple bad throws but he was also having to run around a lot with the poor O line. He forced that last ball but nobody plays for a tie in preseason. He had nice touch and reminded me a little of Brees with footwork and always looking down field. I think he should get a shot in practice with the ones here and there.

Over all it was underwhelming and I hope someone steps up and takes the job. It’s hard coming from Brees to this and we are spoiled but at this point I think our future isn’t in the building.

Fair enough, but the problem is with us. We are not taking into account ...

  1. depleted receiving squad
  2. resting/injured starters
  3. the burden on receivers to sync with alternating QB styles

I think we saw Jameis find his mojo as it went along and Taysom was the opposite. He came out blazing and then began to falter.

Maybe because some of the first string guys substituted out? It's hard to compare apples to apples with all the substitutions going in and out on both sided of the ball.

He had more starters period.

So did the Raven's defense. There's a reason the Saints running game picked up later in the game. It wasn't because the Saints 2nd string O-line is better than the Saints first string O-line.

Winston is the starter, Hill is the Swiss Army Knife and Book is the backup QB waiting in the wings.
if payton can coach each up to potential, this is an enviable situation

Throwing a TD doesn't mean it was a better throw. That's like grading a QB based on wins to me. Semantics that ignore actual evaluation. Taysom's rolling to the right throw was the best of the game. Winston's TD throw was nice as well but doesn't grade better. Over time those stats can even out with performance but in a single game setting like this just grade each throw.

Based roughly on memory they are even to me. A handful of off-target ugly throws and some nice pretty throws. Think Taysom should do more on his sack and didn't like Jameis's happy feet on his first sack. I'd have to go back play by play and count it up to see who actually did better. It was that close.

I'm not as high on Book's performance. I would have given him a C-. Of course thats understanding he was in a pretty rough situation. The team fell apart in the second half and it was his first action.
It's a more important outcome, just like an interception. That's not semantics. Quarterbacks get judged on touchdowns and interceptions the last time I checked and Jameis was the only guy that had one. Yes, it was a nice throw but you overlook Jameis's ability to go through his progressions and throw a nice pass for the TD. Jameis can make all the throws we already know that it's his decision making people question. Taysom almost had 2 picks but no one mentions that. I agree we are talking about quarters and not the whole game but that's all we have for now.

I really don't think this game is a good measure of either Taysom or Jamies. Both of our best offensive lineman didn't play a down, nor did Kamara. I want to see both QB's with the starters if possible but not sure it's going to happen....

Jameis had some ugly throws like the one well behind the TE on a short cross and an out to the right that should have been toward the sideline but was inside and a defender got his hands on it.

Taysom had the ugly throw to the RB and the one deeper throw on the wrong side of the receiver that almost got picked.

Jameis had some nice throws to open recievers and capped off the drive with a nice TD throw. Taysom sustained a drive with some nice throws to open recievers and had a great throw under pressure. His running game failed him and killed the drive.

It was tit for tat. The ints and TDs weren't indicitive of the actual plays. The actual Ints didn't even illustrate their worst throws. The TD didn't illustrate the best throw of the game.

I can tell you when Payton evaluates his QBs he's not going to look at the TDs and INTs statistics and call it a day. He will grade each throw based on the film. The TD throw won't grade higher just because it was a TD.

First off, there's a massive difference between throwing 30+ yard downfield picks and throwing them 10 yards down the field. One is close to a punt while the other usually results in free run the other way. Taysom has serious accuracy issues when he's scrambling in any direction but to the right. I thought Winston's throws on average seemed to be where the receiver needed them to be to run through the catch. Taysom's throws frequently cause the opposite to happen. Winston has a serious issue with throwing bad out routes at the start of games. You can see it in the film of his picks from his last year with the Bucs. That route needs to be off the table until he's warmed up and in the game flow.

Okay coach;)

I don’t entirely disagree with you - Payton will be looking at all of this in a way none of us are able to. He knows what his expectations are for every player on the field, and for every play he calls.

But I think you’ve got it wrong on the TD pass. Red zone production is an area of importance and I think Payton will be evaluating it in that context. The field shrinks, the margin for error is tighter, and the goal for every possession is a TD.

Right within the context of it being a shorter field with the pressure on makes it a tougher throw then if you made the same play at the 50. The defense is condensed. You grade it accordingly. Just like throwing under pressure on the move versus having time. Or converting on 3rd and long because your running game is stagnant. The argument made that he automatically was better because he threw a touchdown is a cop-out to me.
