People went way overboard with Rattler but that's not his fault. He needs reps and time. Haener would clearly be #2, but he also still needs reps and time. Quite frankly I'm fine with that should Carr go down. This team needs a top 5 pick badly. Also, haven't had a 4.3 breakaway RB in a long time. Since Sproles?

I am still very high on Rattler. The line gave him no time in this game. I still trust him with the ball in his hands. But yes, like all rookies, he needs to develop for a year or two.

Haener is in no way the clear #2. His erratic throws were all over the place against the #3s and #4s. I DO NOT trust the ball in the hands of Haener. And no, we did not go overboard with Rattler. I still clearly see the talent in him. Please don't get on the "told you so" crowd with Rattler.

But the most positive thing is that the starting defense is looking really good even without Lattimore and Adebo on the field.

Man, i hadn’t really thought of that but adding those two to the mix on top of what we have seen from everyone else…That’s exciting.

Rico Payton should make the team. He’s been quite good in games.

I will say this. Carr does need to play a few series in the third preseason game. I didn't like the first two drive.

Mason Fairchild had a good game. If we just had a starting TE and a WR that could get separation.

Ok. Lets go. Pros: Our first team defense minus some key starters continue to play well. Orji and Rico Payton had a solid game. Penning improve a lot and hope to continue (very happy about this one), running game was ok.

Cons: WR. WR and WR. Gees we have no one after Shaheed. AT Perry can occasionally gives you a few catches here and there but I see a Brandon Coleman clone there. Add to the insult Shaheed in walking boots. No one stood out in this game. Offensive line throughout is still our weakest link. What's up with Lemieux and his snaps today? He is a veterans for sake. None of our back up quarterbacks are ready. Haener in the lead but still. I am not advocating to sign a veteran. Keep both as back up and hope we don't need them to play this year. CB Wright had a terrible game. Foskey still doesn't stand out.

Meh: Payton Turner had some moments to make a play but he needs to finish. Doesn't seem to play with authority.

Sometimes I think our front office get too comfortable. Instead of bringing in a solid receiver like A Tyler Boyd they say if we have AT Perry who has shown potential but is unproven along with two really underperforming vets in Wilson and St. Brown. Should have been more aggressive at tackle and WR.

He's hurt. I believe he pulled a hamstring over a week ago.

Well get in line because the whole league is searching for quality offensive linemen. Looking around the preseason games offensive line play has been horrendous.

I don't believe Haener or Rattler are ready to be a #2 at this point. They may in time but I wouldn't want to throw them to the wolves in the regular season and expect good results.

I liked the holes the offensive line opened up. It's quite refreshing to see with respect to what we've seen in the last few seasons.

Penning looked more than adequate in the running game, but he's still not bending enough at the waist so he's getting outleveraged on bull rushes. He's going to be a problem. It will be very evident when Carr has to throw to the right side of the field and can't step into throws because of the pressure. Maybe there are ways to overcome this with motion chipping on the edge and tight ends. However, I can't recall during preseason when defenses have run stunts on the line. I'm not sure how Penning will react to that.

It's obvious we need an additional receiver who can get open or make contested catches. The only consistent one is Olave. Ideally a healthy Mike Thomas, but that will never happen. I believe Renfrow is still available, but he's 2 season removed from being the kind of receiver we need.

Taysom was a man today. Gotta keep him healthy. His blocking was devasting and his nose for the hole is exactly what this team needs.

Carr was slightly behind receivers today, but overall, he'll get the job done if our blocking holds up.

Dline was stout...save for a few plays when they lost contain, they got after the QB and plugged up the middle of the field.

Gay, Orji are nice compliments for Davis and Werner. (sorry, I couldn't resist)

Secondary was stout. We'll have some tough cuts there.

I think Hayball might have a slight edge over Hedley but neither are inspiring.

It’s late up here in Ohio and I’m going to bed, but here’s a pro: I still hate the 49ers and even in a preseason game, I wanted us to win 80-0 and for their stadium to sink 5000 feet under the ground once everyone cleared out. Good night.

Pro:

1. The first team offense scored at TD! Carr looked better.
2. Udoh at RT. I don’t think he is great at run blocking but I didn’t see any whiffs on passing downs. I think Udoh has a legit shot to be our RT by week 6.
3. Payton at boundary CB might have won CB6.
4. Penning looked better on run plays and not terrible on passing plays. Improvement.
5. FB Hill is real!!
6. Run focused play calling with quick passes was nice.

Cons:

1. Boyd was showing well at 1-tech and had a knee injury.
2. Both QBs seemed anxious and stepped into contact when the pocket was clean.
3. WR is an issue.
4. So are running QBs.
5. Howden’s missed tackle might cost him a starting role.

Good news: I think the Kubiak-DA pairing could work long term.

Bad news: It'll take a few years (with better drafting...fingers crossed) for us to get back to being a contender.
