Rodgers-Cromartie...4.28 40 yard dash' (merged) (1 Viewer)

Sort of.

Robert Meachem :) He was the winner of the Saints poll in the 2007 "Experts" Mock Draft.

Yeah but is that because people wanted him? Or because they knew he was Payton's "guy"?

I can think of one!

i knew what it was but i still had to Click it.....goosebumps everytime..that was the day everything turned around...say what u will about Reggie but i will never forget that day!!!!

Does this mean we'd be better off picking somebody with slightly less athletic ability, but more experience with more quality competition with more refined technique?

Maybe. I mean it depends on what you're prioritizing I suppose. Brandon Flowers comes to mind. I believe DownWithDisease came down in favor of him. He was a starter at V-Tech, has a lot of experience in both zone and man, is physical in run defense, smart football player, and has by all accounts great technique. V-Tech also has a good history of turning out CBs.

So you could probably suggest Brandon Flowers is more "NFL ready".

That said Flowers isn't in the same ballpark as Rodgers-Cromartie physically. DRC has a real shot at being something totally special. My preference is to swing for the fences if you think you have a legitimate shot at getting out of the park. But that's me.

The key thing to remember though when you look at these rookies is don't get too caught up in "scheme". Patrick Willis went from a Tampa-2 to a 3-4 defense. Shawn Merriman and Demarcus Ware went to an entirely new position. Ware went from C-USA competition to the NFL.

Even though within the college players there are varying degrees of "NFL ready" ALL will have a lot of work to do in terms of technique/learning scheme/adjusting to level of competition.

This "did he play in an NFL scheme" business is overrated. It helps some in trying to get a scouting report of the player but ultimately it comes down to the same two factors

1) Does he cut it physically

2) Does he cut it mentally

Either they meet the criteria or they don't. "Scheme" "Level of competiton" etc are just factors in helping you evaluate those two items.

I'm just curious, because this was before my time. What was the opinion of Sully on here prior to and after the Saints drafted him?

well my opinion was

WAIT... we just traded DOWN for Sully..... AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOO

Despite all the hindsight on this board, at the time most thought he would turn out be a beast and we needed a DT badly. I don't think as many people were upset with the pick at the time as they lead on now.

I don't necessarily disagree with you on any points. My only thought is that we have spent at least the last 2 first round picks on players that have yet to live up to their pre-draft hype. Say what you want about Reggie, I don't call him a flop, but he's far from living up to his potential.

I just wonder if the Saints, what I consider to be a "win now" team, can continually afford to draft very gifted players and let them take 2-3 or more years to develop to their potential....as opposed to a Willis, Ryans, etc that came in and had an immediate impact, albeit for poor teams.

I think we as fans are win now but not the FO. I think Loomis and Payton are building for the future. I also think Benson is committed to Payton for at least 3-4 more years to allow him the chance to do that.

We've done very well with 1st rounders the past 8 years. The only bust was Sullivan, and that was a need pick. The only other disappointment was Stallworth, but at least he was an good WR for us while he was here (and we got a 3rd rounder for him after we got rid of him). As for Bush, even if he never becomes a dominant runner, I think we'll more then get our value out of him in other ways. Players like Grant, Smith, Brown, Bush, and Deuce are major building blocks for us. I think Meachem will come into his own this year and be the dominant number 1b guy we need.

Theres alot of things to bash the FO over, but we've made some great 1st round picks. 3 probowlers (4 if you count grant, it was a sham he didn't make it in 04) out of our last 7 picks. Pretty good.

Yeah but Patrick Willis was an enormously gifted athlete. Much, much more-so then any LB in this draft and even more so then any in the 2006 draft (including Ryan and Hawk). Willis was also very raw despite having played in the SEC (Singletary referred to him as to having "no technique") AND he was moved from a base 4-3 (Tampa-2) to a 3-4 defense.

Making Willis an enormous project in his own right.

Reggie Bush, on the other hand, was a Heisman winner and National Champion at USC with all of the big-program production you could possibly want from a player.

It just never works out that neatly/nicely
