Ronald Curry interviewed for Saints Offensive Coordinator (1 Viewer)

I give Curry a 95% chance of being the choice for OC. I also think that Gruden will drop his lawsuit and become Senior Offensive Assistant/Assistant Head Coach. Total speculation, but that's what it feels like Mickey's current path suggests. I don't like it, but this is what my gut tells me.

I think the sheer volume of interviewees combined with the reality that almost all of them share a common philosophical lineage gives me the opposite impression. I think they interviewed Curry as a favor. They are serious about finding someone outside with fresh, innovative ideas.

I hope you're right and I will happily eat crow if that happens. There's nothing in the current Loomis/Allen regime that gives me that impression though.

They kept Curry and they do not seem in a rush to hire an outside guy though they are targeting guys so its not far fetched to think this could be another ploy to hire from within by giving people the idea that this is a wide open search.

I do not see these as valid reasons.

1.) Your job as the QB Coach is not to design and call plays, so his idea of how to run an offense could be vastly different than that of PC but Curry job is to support and disseminate information to the QB about the best way to execute the offense in terms of what he is seeing out on the field (in the QB room and on the sideline), the Lions of now up for a head coaching gig was the QB coach before Campbell fired the OC and promoted him and he brought his ideas and adjustments to the offense (in season) and their offense has been clicking and top 5 the last two seasons.

2.) Curry (IMHO) was not "tasked" with being the OC at the Senior Bowl it was just and exercise for position coaches to take on a bigger role and what better time to do it than in the offseason teaching and college athletes who are auditioning to become professional athletes, not exactly a ringing endorsement of his capabilities as an OC just an opportunity to hold the call sheet.

Curry should be receiving OC interviews like the rest of these TE, QB coaches and Passing Game Coordinators around the league but he is not, he may not be ready but the Saints think a lot of him as a member of the staff, but not enough to run their offense.
Well, if you go back and listen to Ronald Curry's official Sr. bowl interviews he said he had to do like 5 different playbook installs throughout the week to cater it to the players abilities and strengths. In other words, coordinating the offense for the week/game. That to me is one of the signs of a good coach: recognize strengths and weaknesses, and strategize accordingly. And I don't doubt that all of these candidates have those traits, one of the externals may even land the job. Just don't arbitrarily dismiss Ronald Curry because he's not external.

If we didn't promote Allen, he wouldn't have stayed on as DC. He would've gone to another team.
That's not how it works. He was under contract as the DC and a change at HC doesn't change that. Just like how Sean Payton was still under contract and couldn't just go where ever he wanted without the Saints permission.

Curry has experience in other systems. He was 49ers offensive asst for 2 yrs before coming here. So even though it would be a promotion from within, it could be a change as well.

Curry: Yeah, he's an example, just like the Tre'Quan (Smith) question about his production. It's not because the player can't play. It's more because when you're drawing up the offense, first you're going to think about Mike (Thomas) and then you're probably going to think about (Jared) Cook and then you're probably going to think about (Alvin Kamara). So by the time you get to these guys it's kind of like basketball, you're going to think about LeBron, LeBron, LeBron, until he has to kick it to the corner for somebody else to shoot. You don't draw those plays up for guys, the ball just finds them and that's just the way our offense works. A lot of the plays that I've drawn up for Tre'Quan and Shorty B (Harris), but eventually they double team Mike, they double team Cook and somebody has to step up and then the ball finds them.

I guarantee you he would've asked for his release and we would've likely granted it since a new coach would probably want to bring in his own staff anyway. Mickey remembers Payton bringing in Gary Gibbs. Knowing we had a top DC in Allen and thinking Pete could continue what Payton had going was a big big part of the reason we are where we are.

He might have, but you can't guarantee it because it didn't happen that way. DA wasn't even the assistant HC at the time, Ryan Nielson was. He had no claim to the job and was under contract like every other coach we kept. We wouldn't have blocked him from seeking other HC jobs obviously, but there was nothing preventing us from retaining him as DC if a newly hired HC wanted to keep him.

That's not an indication of his thought process but how plays are created around star players around the league.

The more I focus on Ronald Curry the more intrigue it brings to mind....

Question: why would the Saints want to hire an OC from the 'Shanny/Mcvay' tree like everybody else?? Try running the same offense as everybody else?? The same offense that everybody's defense will be preparing for....Ronald Curry may be able to bring some unique offensive ideas that creates different issues for defenses than what they normally prepare for. Plus the Saints still have the Taysom pkgs and i got a feeling Curry, being the stud athlete that he was, his vision for a guy like that could be much different and more creative. Let everybody copy Shanahan and McVay, dare to be different.
