Podcast Ross Jackson speculates Carr trade to Giants (139 Viewers)

Carr's $30 mil salary doesn't become guaranteed until 5 days after the new league year starts. So there may be a way to move some of his base salary to guaranteed salary (paid by the next team) to entice him to waive his no trade clause during that period. If he were straight up cut, he'd only get $10 million more and even that cap space would be recouped by the team if he signs somewhere else because he has offset language in his contract. Either way, we'd save the $10 million for 2025 at some point and he'd be off the books for 2026. But it would be nice to get even a late pick for him if one was out there.
I'm not a cap guy.
Would you know how much it would lower the cap for the 2025 season if he did get traded?

Not to mention, he has a no trade clause. Would he even want to go to the Giants?
Ross notes the no-trade clause, but surmises that if the new coach doesn't want to roll with Carr, then Carr might want out. Ross states upfront this is unlikely, but he doesn't want to rule out the possibility. Ross is really conducting a kind of "if-then" thought experiment here, and, to his credit, doesn't claim to have any inside information or know anything definitively. He is just considering what could happen depending on whether the new coach believes he can succeed with Carr, or wants to move in a different direction.

Carr will be here next year and possibly cut the year after, I don't see any team taking on his contract, and as it was mentioned earlier, he has a no trade clause which means he has us bent over a barrel.
He'll be our starting QB next year and hopefully MM can get the most out of him while we continue to build the rest of the pieces for the team.

Jones’ guarantees ran out this year, the Giants owe him nothing in 2025.
They need to draft a QB with the first selection, either Shadeur or Cam Ward but having the 3rd pick is going to be interesting if both those guys are off the board.
I'm predicting they try to trade up to number 2 but the browns won't want to budge and if they do, they will be asking for some quality picks in return.

Raiders are another one that may want to move up.

Carr will 100% be with the Saints and run MM (assuming he's the choice for HC) system for a year or two.
Build the rest of the team through draft picks and have an established, quality and core group of players that can support a young QB incoming for 2026 or 2027.
...coupled with better luck and better prevention strategies in the injury department, that might be a good enough formula to retake this terrible division?

Not a ton. It works out pretty close in dead money this year, but clears it for next year.

If Carr STAYS and nothing is modified, his current cap number for us includes $30 mil base salary, $10 mil roster bonus and $11,458,000 in this years portion of his prorated bonus. For a total of $51,458,000 cap hit.

If he was CUT before March 17th, all of Carr's prorated bonuses would accelerate to 2025 which is $40,132,000. That would be dead cap. We would also be on the hook for his $10 million guaranteed salary. Leaving a dead cap of $50,132,000, but a savings of $1,326,000 against the 2025 cap and leaving nothing remaining for 2026. However, if he were to sign with another team, every dollar he makes would come back to us up to that $10 million because of offset language in his contract.

If he waived his no trade clause and was TRADED, we would still have to eat the entirety of his prorated bonuses, but his roster bonus and guaranteed salary would both move to the new team and the Saints would gain $11,326,000 in 2025 cap space and have the $40,132,000 in dead money.

100% AGREE!!
We are not in a great division and as weird as it sounds, we were still mathematically still in it until about Week 15 if I'm not mistaken.

We were the 4th place team in a terrible division. Hopefully our standards are a little higher than 1st place team in a horrible division and just sneaking into the playoffs to lose in the Wildcard round. Mine are at least.

Making the playoffs (winning your division) is every team's goal to start with... anything can happen from there.
2011 Giants won the SB after going 9-7 in the regular season.
