Saints Cap Moves: Derek Carr restructured, Erik McCoy restructured; J. Williams released; cap space is at -$8,543,537 (80 Viewers)

We’ve needed one since 2017, when everyone knew Brees was almost done. Why do you think Payton wanted Mahomes?
LOL And yet we went 11-5,13-3,13-3 12-4 and should have made it to the SB if not for the No-Call , with an almost done Brees. SP saw something in Mahomes that made him want to take him. If it was such a great need with an " Almost Done Brees" why didn't he take one in the yrs that followed?? He could have taken Jackson the next yr. Or Love in 2020. SMH

I actually didn’t know that was the current rule. Did that change fairly recently, because I’ve been here a long time and always remember one quoted paragraph from a pay article was okay?
I asked my Dad about that. He is an inactive OG from this site and had some part/input into the rules. He said it has been worded as it is for close to 20 years. The first part of the rule essentially says that the quoted portion you reference is for non-paysites. What I quoted here is just for pay sites.

Anything to add @Andrus ?

What relevance do our records with Brees have? Are you really that incapable of understanding the point, or are you being deliberately obtuse?

Also, funny you mention Love. Why do you think the Packers took him?

I've had a couple vodaks. Does this deal in any way help the saints in the next few years? We aren't winning it all with Carr. He isn't the long term solution. Can some one explain if this helps the team to get past our current problems.

No, it doesn't help the team in the next few years. It's more salary cap kicking that is the result of past mistakes.

I mean it pushes more dead money to the future, however it further leads to the belief that this is his last season here and he will be post June 1 cut next year and we will have to eat at least 30mil in dead cap just for Carr in 2026 and 2027. Essentially if Rattler aint him we will be baaaad in 2026.

Not sure why we continue to debate Carr on this page. He’s a mid QB who you can win with, but not because of. He needs everything around him to be perfect to have a serious shot at a championship (and that’s being kind). Yet, he’s unwilling to take a pay cut that would improve the chances of that happening.

Winston was a below average QB but the fans embraced him because he embraced us and the city. Carr talks a good game but delivers little and has shown he doesn’t give a damn about New Orleans. It doesn’t help when his brothers consistently spout nonsense on social media either.

The usual homers on here can continue to defend him but the sooner he’s off this team the better. 8-9 seasons might excite some, but no thank you.

No one is excited about 8-9 seasons. Don’t be silly.

You do realize that without this move today, you’re basically forced to kick the can with most of the older guys on the team with your hand forced, you’re letting all of your own free agents walk, and you’re basically sitting next week out and can’t sign anyone until the summer time when all that’s left is the scrap heap, right?

It was the only realistic option financially. They can add free agents the next two years to rebuild and change their schemes. Preferably, young long term contracts this year. The only way to ever rebuild the roster was to draft well regardless.

Because your statement that Brees was almost done so we needed to take a QB in the 1st was ridiculous. As evident by our record from 2017 -2020. THAT'S the point There was not a need to take a QB in the 1st at that time.
GB likes to groom their QBs so they take them late 1st rd and the jury is still out on Love. And Rodgers was not as you say " Almost Done" And the Packers situation has nothing to do with the fact that SP did not feel the need to take a QB in the 1st after 2017

If the plan is to rebuild through free agency, the biggest issue is QB. There’s many philosophies but how do you get a good one if you’re never at the top of the draft? This is the closest we’ve been to the #1 pick since 2008, and that was still only pick #7.

This goes for more than just sports reporters. At some point people began believing that their way is the best way to run/fix a football team and when the team doesn’t follow their exact lead, all hell breaks loose and tantrums get thrown. It wasn’t always like this.
I've heard a few people say that as a society we have lost a lot of respect for people with experience, advanced knowledge and/or expertise. I think it's true and it's a significant problem. Society falls apart if too many people think they know better than the people who actually know better.

Yes, contrary to popular belief around here, you can indeed make moves today and begin making significant strides towards the program you want to build right now.

This “Oh I don’t want to strive for winning 9-10 games and a crappy division” mentality is just wild to me.

A 9 to 10 win division win and playoff berth in year 1 of a program is a HUGE tone-setter that’s worth striving for.

And who knows, maybe you win a playoff game and all of a sudden you find yourself on a stage you never envisioned playing in a huge postseason matchup, kind of like in 2000 and in 2006.

Just like people say we needed to stop kicking the can once the Brees era ended, I conversely say the “SB or bust” mentality needs to cease too now.

We are trying to build something here. A good 9 to 10 win season and a possible division title is not something to turn your nose up at when trying to establish a new culture.

Getting a QB is a crap shoot regardless. If you think one is worth it, trade up for him. Just like the Chiefs did with Mahommes after going 12-4.
