Saints draft WR Chris Olave (1 Viewer)

I hope he’s worth a 1, a 2, two 3s, and a 4, essentially more than a whole draft for him.
I see you getting clowned by some which is ridiculous. It's a legitimate statement. That said, he fills a very important void for us. 5 picks for the #3 receiver in the draft does seem excessive to me as well.

We didn’t have to trade anything for Penning.
Wrong. The trade with Philly is tied into the package trade. We just didn't trade any more for Penning tonight. Don't have an issue on the Penning pick in particular, but the package of draft picks (in total) was a lot to give up for what we got. That was the point of my post.

We moved back from 18 to 19 as part of the the first of two deals that got us Olave.

By Week 4 of the season, you will be glad the trade was made.

After the trade with the Eagles most Saints fans wanted OT and WR with their two first round picks before the draft. The Saints drafting an Ohio State Buckeye might be the most predictable thing based on their affinity for the program. With Wilson gone the pick before Olave was likely their first or second wide receiver on their board. The trade up was necessary. The Saints did their homework. Wide receivers so far ( currently pick 25) went at 8 London, 10 Wilson, 11 Olave, 12 Williams, 16 Dotson, 18 Burks... big trades at WR this offseason for $100 million contracts Hill, Adams, now AJ Brown, and Samuel is asking for a new deal, and new deals for Diggs and Cooper. Michael Thomas now ranks 12th in Average per year. Getting a top wide receiver was this teams top need and makes more money ball sense than ever. The question on the trade is how much better is Olave than Dotson or Burks. I will happily trust the front office on this one. Olave was a team captain on a loaded team. He is the best route runner in the draft and super productive. There is an argument to be made for Jameison Williams but the front office obviously had Olave higher on their board. Olave to me sounds like a ready made pro with a strong work ethic who complements Michael Thomas with deep speed and great separation.
They will immediately bond because they come from the same team. Olave said he’s ready to learn from Thomas. So will Calloway. That wR room gonna be smoking’!!!!

Who freaking cares what we traded to get Olave and Penning? We needed a speed WR, but not just speed, a WR with skill and speed. We got that. We needed a LT to replace TA. We got a mean/nasty LT who is a large man to protect Winston's blind side. Does he need a little work on technique, yes, but we have Marrone to do just that. The FO said we would get 3 of the top 20-25 players on their board, so far we got 2 and still have pick 49. The FO also said trading next years pick was to get a player of need a year early, we got that. We don't know what the Saints draft board looked like, but for them to move up to 11 and grab Olave over the rest, that's a good indication they had Olave as their top 1 or 2 WRs with maybe Wilson being 1 or not.

I wanted Burks, but one of my concerns about Burks is that Merritt has the same skillset and is on the roster. We didn't have Olave's skillset on the roster.

Olave is a perfect fit for Big body receiver like MT

Louie sees slot of similarities with Olave and Marvin Harrison

You want the outside guys be fast and slender. The bigger physical recievers take a beating

Need a running back and we should be right in the NFC race

Right, don't disagree there. For people making arguments on how much we gave up for Olave, it's impossible to untangle the set of trades. What I posted is what we gave up for what we got in total. You really can't say we gave up x to get Olave and y to get Penning. The total cost for both players plus the sixth round pick cost us plenty.

Was it worth it? We'll see. But the Saints had better get this right and hope these picks stay healthy.

The Saints decided to trade away picks that in previous years have yielded the likes of CJGJ (4th) and AK41 (3rd)

Everything we gave up was for Olave. We could've taken Penning at 18 without making any trades. I know it sounds better to say we got both players for all of that. But all of the extra picks we gave up is what got us Olave.

I'll disagree with you there. The Philly trade was done before the draft, so no one knew how that would play out on draft day. I think they did want a WR and OT in the first in this draft as most predicted. I think the Saints got nervous when they saw WR go early and figured a run was coming, so they jumped up to get Olave. His cost was probably more than Penning if I were to guess. But, again, you'd have to untangle both trades.

Not all of those extra picks can be attributed to Olave (only the Washington trade picks) plus some unknown amount of value in the Philly trade. Again, I'd say that is hard to untangle. It's a 3 player for 7 seven trade including a lot of relatively high picks.

my favorite part about Olave is his ability to create separation with his route running. One of the main reasons is because of his insane acceleration. As far as the combine goes, he’s in the top 99.6% for 10 yard dash and top 99.8% for the 20 yard dash all time.
The best way I could describe da players in our monster 2017 draft was :

“NFL READY”!

IMO, Chris Olave IS an “NFL READY “ WR! But it also comes with a bit of a “caveat” as to where he would go, n the kinda O he’d play in.

That said, playin here is a nice fit for him! Our passing O was poo last year. But this season, we’ll have both Jameis AND esp Mike Thomas back! If all goes well with dat duo, a healthy, nasty, productive Mike alone is gonna make our entire WR group better! So I look for things to open up more for Quez n Deonte.

Now, add in Chris Olave to dat mix. After Deonte, he’d b our fastest WR in dat group. But in da 3 n 4 WR sets, I look for the rook to use his smarts, speed n route running to find holes n “set down” against zone, and/or win against man coverage!

N don’t worry too much about Olave having to go against dat vaunted NFL press man coverage for now. We’ll likely use him mostly as a “Z” receiver, which means he’ll line up off the line. So he’ll have a lil extra space to work wit n hopefully beat his man.

Bottom line, I think we got a good player!!! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
