Article Saints Execs love Spencer Rattler per ESPN’s Matt Miller (20 Viewers)

If Ratt is so good, how many teams do you think will give us a higher than 5th-round pick for him? I remember when we used to do this with our mid-round LBs; now, it's mid-round QBs.

Naw you missing the point. We are in cap hell and have a rookie QB on a cap safe rookie contract, who hasn't had a fair shot to prove himself.

All I'm saying is wait for him to start an actual fricking season as number 1 after he beats Carr out.

That's fair. I'm sure you see it this way with our pathos being involved.

Cap hell is a little overstated. Weren't the Saints like $100 Million over the cap when they signed Carr to a $100 Million contract? If the Saints were close to being contenders, they could make moves.

I don't know man. There seems to be quite a few of our veteran players, even on defense, that believed in him and showed him encouragement on the sidelines. He was showing enough in practice that he hurtled Haener to start when Carr went down. He also improved dramatically from when he was thrown into the fire to when he started more games later in the season. He made a lot of really great throws, led the huddle well, and wasn't panicking. I don't think anybody is saying give him a $200 million contract, just see what he can do with a full offseason of development and a real chance to compete for the starters job.

And you really should get over where he was drafted. The 49ers took Mr. Irrelevant to the freaking Super Bowl two years ago. If you put the right pieces around a talented player, exploit those talents and hide their weaknesses you can get somewhere with a young talented player.

We have already exploited nearly every contract on the roster. The only easy way to even get under the cap this year is to make Carr's and a lot of older players contracts even worse. The game is up on that if we're trying to actually improve the team and not tread water.

Haener was our number two, Rattler was third string, let that sink in.

Rattler is not going to win the job over Carr.

Here is the deal as I see it. If Carr starts next year, we move on after and have no qb option after and are probably drafting too late to realistically move up. If it's Rattler(or Haener), we either are in much better position to draft a future qb or we discover we already have him on our roster.

I also think we should trade down a couple times this year for 2026 pics that can be used as ammunition if the Rattler(or Haener) qb situation doesn't work out.

If it does work out, then rebuild accelerated.

I've said similar things myself. It's how Moore views next season and how aggressively we want to begin cleaning up the cap. If he thinks gets a pass on next year, cutting Carr post 6/1 makes sense. However, if the goal is to win next year that becomes a little more complicated.

Right, but how much experience do you need? Its very common that after years of starting in college that if you don't already have it to some degree, you're likely not going to get it. JD5, Stroud, Mahomes... we can go further back and name dozens who came into the NFL knowing exactly what you're speaking of and building off it as they get more experience. Rattler is showing that he doesn't have have any at all.

You speak of experience as if time and trys fixes all for everyone. When what I see is processing and defensive anticipation. Winston was rarely a step ahead of the defense. Rattler feels the same. Except with Rattler it feels like the defense is two steps ahead of him.

It's like a 6th sense that develops better over time. Winston never had it and feels like Rattler doesn't either.
in college he was able to be himself. In the pros he has to become someone better. His natural instincts will succeed to a certain degree then will fail him due to the Nfls tighter coverage and complex schemes which bait amateurs into throwing picks. So part of the time equation is how long of a leash will a coach have on him. And it’s true some QBs never get there. And that’s why they become back ups. They can win you a 1/2 game here and there or maybe a couple games. It’s not only Klints fault that Rattler disappears in the second half. What makes Rattler interesting is that his demeanor shows that he can get it. The kid is either a great faker or he’s not easily rattled. Choking happens when you can’t stay calm and collective.

I think he’d be worth a 3rd right now. Even though he has 0-6 baggage, he showed promise.

I like Rattler's 2024. He came in as a rook to a messed up team and ended up getting starts, game reps, and made some plays. Sometimes the light was off, but sometimes the light was on and the pedigreed skillset was on display. Arm talent, mobility.

As for this thread, here's the lineage.

Dan Orlovsky reacting to Shrine Bowl and Syracuse QB Kyle McCord.

Matt Miller 15 minutes later in reply to Dan Orlovsky.

Bleacher Report mule writes an article.

The topic here should be Kyle McCord vs. Spencer Rattler.

I would be a big fan of drafting McCord and finding a way to move on from Carr. Bringing in an inexpensive veteren QB as insurance while Rattler and McCord develop and compete for the starting QB role. McCord won't cost a lot of draft capital and, as you all heard me say, I believe is the best QB in this year's draft.
