Article Saints Execs love Spencer Rattler per ESPN’s Matt Miller (18 Viewers)

I have doubts that Haener even makes the roster this coming year (Rattler has a much higher ceiling)....Rattler was a rookie that was thrown to the wolves with little support and a god awful coaching staff, do you really think it's fair or even logical to try and evaluate him under those circumstances? I certainly don't, I still don't think anyone knows what we have in him....
He got live action, and an offseason, a good coach can make an evaluation of his ability. Is he better than Haener who played under the same conditions, maybe, do we need to go into next season with either as our backup qb, absolutely not. Hopefully our new coach brings in some talent to the position, what DA did last season was ridiculous. We played without a true number two qb and Carr was treated like he was Tom Brady, given zero competition.

And I'm not sure that any QB in this draft, other than Ward, is a better prospect than Rattler. And we are not in a position where it makes sense to spend a lot of money on a backup QB.

If they find a QB in this bad QB class that they think might be better than Rattler, then I'm fine taking one, but I'm not sure there is one.
You maybe right, if so we should look for a cheap vet to backup Carr and bring in competition for Haener and Rattler and keep the best young prospect.

Well he can certainly make Dak and Hurts' throws, so id agree. He'd also have to work on his deep ball timing, too many under thrown.
I think there were some confidence issues in his WRs when throwing deep. Rattler seemed to be attempting to throw it where only his guy could get it on a lot of those balls. Stretched out arms wide and away from defenders and short and low passes that were sure to go to his guy or incomplete. Most of the receivers he was playing with he hadn't played much with since he was the scout QB before getting thrown in. He did have better chemistry with Bub Means and Kevin Austin Jr. because he'd been playing with them all season. So, while I agree with you that he needs to get better, I think that comes with more reps with the top guys. He's never had that.

They both already beat out cheap veteran backups but sure bring one in. As far as bringing in a young prospect, that's fine if there is someone in the draft that is a better prospect than Rattler, but I don't think there is. Rattler would very likely be the #3 rated QB in this class.

That's fair, but I think the deep balls had more to do with lack of time with the WRs that were playing as opposed to any lack of arm strength. Give him more reps with Olave, Shaheed, and possibly MVS and I think he will hit more of those. Reports out of camp are that he has a better arm than Carr and Carr can certainly throw the deep ball when he wants to. In fact, I think it my be his best throw.

My biggest concerns with Rattler are that he needs to learn to beat the blitz, he needs better ball placement, he needs better touch, and he needs to get better at getting the ball out on time. He has all the cool things like arm strength, scrambling ability, and the ability to make off schedule throws.
NOF had a great interview with a philly reporter. They talked about Kellen Moores offense. The guy said that he (hurts) and Kellen talked hundreds of hours (not exagerating) about the offense and what a defense can possibly show. Its a credit to Hurts too. But the lengthy discussions were to make Hurts feel like for every look there was a decision to be made. Including taking a sack. So if i apply those hours to Rattlers mind, he can hit the ground running. And i think (i hope) he has the desire to do so. Another thing about Rattler, is lack of touch, he fires too many balls off the hands of receivers on short routes. I think he'll learn that he dosnt have to rocket every ball. We probably win a game if he had more short pass touch. Also, i noticed in college his deep balls would be too high and land short. Thats perfect for the back shoulder but not for the post.

Another veteran QB isn't coming unless we restructure Carr, again. Which is an absolutely terrible idea. There is no money for a QB without doing it. We will know for sure how this all plays out within the next 5-6 weeks.

agreed the fact that he and Bub had chemistry only illuminated the fact that they practiced together. And not that Bub is above average. So i agree, if he and the starters get chemistry, look out.

Add in a little bit of protection from the middle of the line and we may have something without doing much. Those all depend on solid drafting and staying healthy though.

That was a great interview. It was Brooks Kubena who is the Athletic beat reporter for the Eagles. He used to cover LSU for the Times Picayune several years ago.

And might not have made it to pick 9. They are already talking about Dart moving into the 1st round. One of the reasons Rattler fell to the 5th was that so many QB needy teams had already chosen one the prior year or in the rush of teams getting one in the top 12 picks in 2024.

awesome you saw it! Ok i didn't know that he covered LSU. No wonder why he was generous with his takes. I think he also mentioned that every team needs a DT or DE that can wrecked the Qb in 2/5 seconds or less. Milton Williams, i believe is their guy, surprisingly not Jalen Carter. Do you recall that? (it may have been from another vid, with someone else) But it makes perfect sense. With that said, id also approve that guy at 9 as well as Jeanty.

I just hope we have a solid backup, someone who can challenge Carr. Right now we have no one behind him. Another season with Haener and Rattler fighting for the backup spot is a recipe for disaster, because I don’t see Carr playing an entire season, he will miss games due to injury.
