He's not a bad coach or anything. He's pretty good with the players and scheme is solid enough.
Still, he's not the guy I would want when we are heading towards a total rebuild...that is the danger of Loomis making this hire and still trying to be within a 'win now' window. We all saw what a house of cards this roster was--and it's only getting older and more stagnant with aging veterans that we are forced into keeping or re-structuring. It's time for a younger HC to lead and build while we take our medicine for a few years.

I disagree. The problem was that the coach hired wasn’t right for the situation. If Loomis wanted to “try to win now”, McCarthy would have been the type of person that could have gotten the most out of the talent in the building if he was available. DA was just not HC material.

If MM does sign with us, I am wondering if he'll bring Zimmer with him. He may choose a different OC, because Shottenheimer has been mid.

Remember, McCarthy is another Payton offensively. He designs and calls his own plays. His OCs are just that in name only.

Vrable didn't work in Tenn because of GM/owner. Jets imploded because of owner had to fire HC. Carolina QB Young was drafted by owner and HC fired after 1 yr. Jags GM runs it. Raiders - enough said. Saints job is probably the 3rd/4th best behind the Pats, Bears, and maybe Dallas.

I'm more intrigued by Kingsbury personally. I think he's learned a lot since his first shot in AZ. But I wouldn't hate McCarthy either.

I think he is a great OC who is probably an average HC. He has a .432 NFL HC record and .467 NCAA record.

Yeah, I don't think enough people understand that the way the Saints give the HC the power and autonomy they do is what a lot of successful teams do. It sure seems that by and large, meddlesome owners and GMs doesn't work as well as those who give a wide berth to the HC.

McCarthy is a good coach and is easily the safest bet out of the coaches we’ve requested an interview with so far. If we do hire him, I’m not going to complain.

That being said, as others have pointed out, the only question is whether it makes sense given our current situation.

I think it's a misnomer the belief that our situation will scare coaches off; McCarthy would be a good hire because he has a proven track record and can right this ship.

My only concern or request is that I think, like others, we want a younger coach who will be here for a while, but a good coach is a good coach, and getting a proven one will always be a better decision than a young up-and-coming one.

I don’t know if the Saints HC job is below that of Dallas. Dallas is just popular based on history. However, since 1995, Dallas has really been a dumpster fire at HC and lack of playoff wins because of the owner.

Yeah, agree and why I said "maybe". Dak's contract is scary and Jones will always put a finger on the scale of football decisions. I think coaching candidates may look at that job as flawed.

Yeah it's basically McCarthy for 6 years. Good chance he right the ship and gets the team back on track. Glenn for a long time but any time you have a successful OC he gets poached after a couple years. Or Brady who could be here for 20 years or could flame out quickly a decimate an already weak team.

With the way things have been, I'm leaning McCarthy. I think we need stability and to rebuild our reputation.

Would love McCarthy. He and Payton have very similar career trajectory. Got pushed out of GB by A-Aron and had to deal with JJ in Dallas.

Based only his QBR Derek Carr is actually underrated. Not saying it’s coming from
you, but I don’t understand the animosity towards Carr.

Correct, the cap would fracture if they cut Carr this year, the math isn't there.

After listening to Loomis presser, it feels like a guy like McCarthy would be at the top of the list. Looks like we will be cleaning house on the coaching staff.

It makes sense for Loomis too. I think he sort of acknowledges that he has to hit on this next coach. MM would assure that.
